My Story

How I got FAT (or Revenge of the grade-school chubby classmate)

I was not a Fat kid. I was not a chubby kid. I was a skinny, knee-cap visible- twig kid.......
Of course, my parents believed that i would blow away in the wind at the slightest gust. They made it their all out effort to fatten me up. (This was, I understand, their parental duty- as they had grown up with much less)

For many years, i was able to take my stand against their determined efforts.
It would take over an hour for me to eat a grilled cheese sandwich. THAT was too much of a task if Mom hadn't cut it into four little triangles! (sounds like how i will be eating after bypass!)  Even at that i would only usually eat 3 of the 4 pieces.

It would have been nice if i could have maintained my steely determination through those difficult growing up years but alas- that was not to be.

George has his revenge. 

I wish i could tell George I'm sorry.  Sorry that all his 5th grade classmates taunted him- picked him last for teams and generally made his life miserable. I was a follower in this torment- as I look back- I wonder where and how he is today. I'm really Sorry George, forgive me.

but- I am now ... what- heavy myself? no Overweight?- no .... I can't be obese!   NOPE not that either. The chart tells it all - let it sink in- I AM MORBIDLY OBESE! ooo that is painful- yet true. SO - If your BMI is above 40 Repeat after me - I AM MORBIDLY OBESE.

there now don't you feel better. we know where we are and OH is our GPS- to help us get  to a better place.

"what happened?"- I ask myself in disbelief. Every winter- I used to ice skate every stinking night after school for a couple of hours before dinner. Every summer- I used to- ride my bike for miles & miles & miles. (back before computer games- hand held devices kids actually played outside.) The kids from the neighborhood- would play baseball in the farmers field- hmm hmm guess what we used for bases???? anyone care to guess?  We would explore our little corner of the Garden State and come home completely exhausted every night.

A day full of biking, swimming, hiking, badimition. These are some of the things i Used to do.

Everything was fine- until- we moved away. AWAY from all my active friends. Close to my dear sweet Aunt & Uncle (who just happened to own a little ice cream shoppe) OH- a broken heart healed with homemade ice cream. (and the price was right)

I was still riding my bike- somewhat. Occasionally, for long miles. Not like the mileage I put on in Jersey.  We had to wait for Dad to get home from work to take us to the lake for a swim.  MY Friends pool no longer NEXT DOOR. Not enough kids around for a quick game of baseball.
Ever try playing badimition with just one person- IT DOESN'T WORK.

don't worry- didn't try that- just making a point. My life changed dramatically. I, myself, also discovered that food tasted- GOOD.

Once I started- eating for reasons other than hunger- i haven't stopped.
I've become an official YO-YO dieter. Every time gaining more back. this has got to stop.  That is why I'm going to have the surgery. I need the control- that this tool gives to so many people. A real opportunity to succeed and maintain a healthy weight.

Well- folks- thats the journey i've started- I am determined to succeed!
I look forward to the time when i can say: I used to be morbidly obese but NOW I am a healthy weight!
