Surgeon TestimonialPaul Stanish, M.D.First Impression was very positive. Dr. Stanish was very professional and very easy to talk with. I had only one pre-op apt. with him and felt completely at ease. I am a RN so I am fairly familiar with this whole process. But I am also used to physicians-which can be positive and negative. rnThe staff at Dr. Stanish's office was great. His PA Holly, was very informative and very thorough. She assists Dr. Stanish during surgery also. I am not sure what her responsibilities are though.rnThere was nothing that I can say negatively about the office help, nurses or Dr. Stanish. I knew immediately that I would go through with my decision.rnDr. Stanish asked many questions, gave plenty of advise. He understands that every patient is an individual and treats them accordingly. rnHaving medical background, he didn't have to go to length in explaining many of the aspects of the program and the surgery. I was able to answer questions and give my input before he could ask. If I had questions, he was very interested in discussing them with me. He discusses family history a great deal which I believe gets lost during the consultation process in many Dr. offices. Pros and cons were discussed at lenth and we came to a decision that the Lapband was exactly what I needed as a tool to reach my goals.rnThe program at the Methodist Hospital is very thorough. It is up to par with any of the teaching hospitals such as University of Illinois in Chicago which I also checked out. I chose Methodist for its program and location to my home. But of course, my intuition and consults did the work and answered the questions that I needed. The program goes through a very detailed systme of checks and balances. Nutritional information given by Kathryn was excellent. General information presented by Karen was just as informative. There is much emphasis on information specific to whether this surgery is 'right' for you. The safety of the surgery and what to expect. They do not take any of this program lightly. So much attention before the surgery and what to expect after surgery is stressed. The aftercare program is life long with Dr. Stanish. This isn't a quick fix. This is something that will be a part of you forever-and they want the patient to be sure that this is the right decision before making any further plans.rnThere is risk to any surgery. All these details were presented in a very understandable manner. The risks associated with anesthesia and the surgery itself were explained by the surgeon and the staff.rnI would rate this whole process as excellent. I am still in the recovery stage but I have been delighted with every aspect of this program and my surgeon. I look forward to the future relationship with my surgeon and his staff.rnBetter, competence or bedside manner. I have had both, and one of the other. But competence is by far the most important factor in a doctor for me. It is great to have bedside manner that is condusive to my needs but I know if doctor knows what he is talking about-that is what I care about. Dr. Stanish has both. He is a great phyician and a great person, from what I have seen so far. Cannot get any better than that!!

LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH
Finall all better on February 27, 2008 10:58 am
It's been a month since my last post. I was finally diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. After 5 days in the hospital and deydrated enough to need 3000 Liters of fluids before I even had the need to pee, I am finally home.
The whole ordeal was a pain in the ass. Test after test showed nothing except for swelling to the external, superior and dorsal aspect of the stomach with additional swelling around the pancreas. All labs where pretty normal excpet for white count was elevated. Never did find out exactly how high. But my care was excellent. Dr. Stanish, my surgeon was really shaking his head. He had never seen anything like this before. Even my gastro doc, Dr. Vencat, was stumped. They ran every test under the sun and still were shaking their heads. I was symptomatic, no doubt something was wrong, but the puzzle pieces were not fitting together. After 5 days in the hospital I felt like the same person again. The horrible pain had subsided. It was a very rough 2 weeks. I was really drained after all of this.
After getting home, I thought I would collapse from exhaustion. It took another week for me to be able to do the normal every day things I was used to doing. Exercising was still out of the pic. I had no energy or strengh. Im not sure what was worse, the dehydation or the pain that I endured over the past 2 weeks. But, I was finally peeing again!
I ended up losing 10 pounds, mostly due to the dehydration. I believe I ended up with a total loss of 5 pounds after the ordeal and fluids returned to normal. I thought it would be more than that.
I feel as if the illness put me back in my weight loss goal. I have yet to feel completely normal as I did before. I dont have the energy I used to and my appitite is huge. I probably forgot to mention that all the fluid was removed from my band before I entered the hosptial. Due to the illness, doc thought it was a good idea. I agreed and thought as well.
After returning to the Dr. offce the following week, they put 1cc of fluid back in. Now its been 3 weeks since I was in the hospital and I only have 1 cc in my band and my weight loss has stopped. I go for another fill next week, one week from now.
It has been very disappointing for me. I lost the time when I was in the hospital and now the time since returning home. I have to start all over again at square one.
I guess I should be happy that my health is in good shape now. I just cant help feeling like a failure with a lot of this. I have not lost any weight since post hospital stay a little over 3 weeks ago. I know that the band is basically empty, I think I actually had 1.5 cc after surgery in my band.
Oh well, whats a girl to do I guess. Hopefully after next week, when I get another fill, I will be back on my way to a continuous weight loss path.

OMG, THE PAIN IS AWFUL---- on January 27, 2008 1:53 pm
HAD MY 2ND FILL ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 22ND. WENT WITHOUT A HITCH. DID MY LIQUIDS 1ST AND 2ND DAY AND HAD SOME PUDDING AT END OF FIRST FULL DAY AND A LITTLE SOFT STIR FRY 2ND DAY. I KNOW I WASNT SUPPOSE TO HAVE SOLIDS YET, BUT FELT FINE AND STIR FRY WAS JUST SOFT MUSHROOMS, AND ONIONS. THEN....
END OF 2ND DAY MY STOMACH STARTED HURTING. I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS MY BAND, SOMETHING HAD HAPPENED. THRU THE 2-4 DAY I THOUGHT FOR SURE IT WAS THE BAND. BUT NOW I KNOW DIFFERENT. I THINK. THE PAIN IS HORRIBLE. I FEEL EVERYTHIN GO THRU BAND, WHICH IS NO PROBLEM, BUT WHEN IT HITS THE STOMACH, BOUT 3-4 SECONDS AFTER SWALLOWING, MY STOMACH FEELS LIKE ITS ON FIRE. I HAVE TO HOLD MY BREATH IT HURTS SO BADLY. EVEN WATER KILLS. MY WHOLE ABDOMEN IS TENDER TO THE TOUCH. EVEN HURTS ON MY BACK AT THE RIBS. I AM THINKING THAT I HAVE AN ULCER. I WAS TRYING TO REMEMBER IF MY STOMACH WAS GIVING MY ANY PROBLEMS IN THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS, BUT CANT THINK OF ANY THING SPECIFIC. IT HIT MY LIKE A TON OF BRICKS. JUST LIKE THAT AND I AM IN HORRIBLE PAIN.
TYLENOL 3 KILLS TO GO DOWN, BUT TAKES OFF THE EDGE JUST A BIT. JUST SITTING HERE TYPING THIS AND I FEEL THIS DULL ACHE IN MY STOMACH. I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I AM A BIT NERVOUS
ABOUT ALL OF THIS. I CALLED THE DR. ON FRIDAY AND TALKED
MARY, DOC'S RN, SHE THOUGHT I NEEDED TO COME IN TO TAKE
OUT SOME FLUID FROM THE BAND AND TO WAIT IT OUT THIS
WEEKEND AND STAY ON FLUIDS .
FOR MY OWN INVESTIGATION, I HAVE TRIED SOLIDS YESTERDAY,
MASHED POTATO AND SOUP. EVERYTHING GOES DOWN JUST
PERFECLY. IT JUST HURT,(KILLS) WHEN IT GOES BEYOND THE
BAND AND INTO THE STOMACH. I HAVE BEEN ON FLUIDS FOR THE
MOST PART SINCE TUESDAY, AND I HAVE LOST ABOUT 7
POUNDS. I HAVE NO FEVER, BUT THE PAIN IS ALMOST
INTOLERABLE. I WILL TEST OUT MY THEORY ABOUT THE
FOOD AND BAND AGAIN TONIGHT. I HAD COUPLE TSP.
SOUP AND NO PROBELM WITH BAND. I WILL TRY SOMETHING
SOLID LATER. THIS WILL CONVINCE ME THAT IT IS AN ULCER
OR SOMETHING IN MY STOMACH AND NOT THE BAND. I THINK
EVERY OTHER HOUR THAT I SHOULD GO TO THE E.R. BUT I
HAVE A HIGH PAIN TOLERANCE AND I DON'T WANT TO JUMP THE
GUN. I FIGURED THAT WAITING 1 MORE DAY WONT HURT ANY-
THING, WELL, I HOPE ANYWAY.
TRYING TO KEEP POSITIVE ABOUT THIS WHOLE THING. IT JUST
SUCKS 'CAUSE I WAS DOING REALLY WELL.
IT SEEMS THAT WHEN IT COMES TO MY HEALTH, MY BODY
ETC. , I NEVER GO BY THE BOOK. THERE IS ALWAYS SOME
PROBLEM OR ANOTHER, WHAT EVER IS NOT SUPPOSE TO
HAPPEN, DOES WITH ME. SHIT. WELL, GOING TO CHECK
FORUM TO SEE IF I HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON MY PROBLEM.
WILL BE BACK TO LOG AFTER A WHILE.
PAIN--ALL ABDOMEN, ESPECIALLY BELOW RIB ARE TO LEFT. ALSO RIGHT AREA HURT. STOMACH FEELS BLOATED. HURTS, VERY SORE
EVEN SITTING STILL. TO SWALLOW KILLS, RIGHT AFTER GOING
THRU BAND. ITS LIKE CLOCK WORK, BOUT 3-4 SECONDS AFTER
SWALLOWING IT BEGINS. FEELS LIKE STOMACH IS ON FIRE,
STABBING PAIN TO STOMACH AREA. SEEMS TO MOVE OUT TO ENTIRE
ABDOMEN. BURPING IS EXCESSIVE WITH EVERY SIP. THE BURPS CAN
BE EXCRUCIATING, AND THEY HAPPEN ONE AFTER THE OTHER.
AS LONG AS I DONT TAKE LIQUIDS, FOOD, PILLS ECT. I CAN DEAL WITH
THE DULL ACHE IN MY STOMACH. EXCEPT WHEN I HAVE TO BURB,
I HAVE TO HUNCH OVER AND HOLD MY ABDOMAN WITH MY ARM.
THIS IS REDICULOUS. OMG, HOPE DR. CAN TAKE ME TOMORROW.

WHO KNOWS WHY SOME DAYS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS. WEIGHT LOSS IS NO DIFFERENT. THIS WEEK HAS BEEN REALLY WEIRD. I HAVE UP-CHUCKED ALMOST EVERY DAY. NOT HORRIBLY, BUT A BIT OF ALMOST EVERYTHING I PUT IN MY MOUTH. I HAVE BEEN SO FRICKIN THIRSTY AS WELL. SLIMING IS A PROBLEM ALSO. BUT I HAVE LOST 3 POUNDS. NOT EATING WILL DO THAT TO A PERSON!!!
THIS IS NOT A GOOD WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT. I GO IN FOR A FILL ON TUESDAY AND LOOKING FORWARD TO IT! AT THE END OF MY CYCLE TOO SO HUNGER GOES DOWN. I REALLY WAIT FOR THIS TIME OF THE MONTH, EVERY MONTH, WHEN HUNGER SEEMS TO TAKE A BACK SEAT TO EVERYTHING ELSE THATS GOING ON.
I WAS FEELING DOWN LAST WEEK DUE TO THE LACK OF WEIGHT LOSS. I KNOW THAT IT SOME TIMES TAKES 2, 3 OR 4 FILLS TO GET THE RESTRICTION THAT ONE WANTS. HOPEFULLY 2 WILL DO IT FOR ME.
TAKING ANITDEPRESSANTS STILL. WILL PROBABLY STAY ON THEM FOR A WHILE. THEY ARE HELPING, TRULY.
THE GIRLS HAVE BEEN GREAT. SEEM TO ALWAYS BE IN A GOOD MOOD. CLASSES BEGAN AGAIN AT THE UNIVERSITIES SO THEIR TIME IS TAKEN UP WITH LOTS OF STUDYING. FELECIA IS ENJOYING PURDUE. SHE IS NUTS TO LEAVE HAWAII FOR THIS CLIMATE, ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. I HAVE THE WINTERS WITH A PASSION. I AM PRONE TO DEPRESSION WHEN THE COLD MONTHS HAVE US CLOSED IN.
BOBBY HAS BEEN WORKING A LOT, SO MUCH HAPPENING AT WORK. I FIND THAT THAT I HAVE A LOT OF EXTRA TIME ON MY HANDS. I AM REALLY THINKING OF GOING BACK TO WORK IN A MONTH OR 2. I NEED THE INTERACTION AND I NEED TO BE AROUND OTHERS, HELPING, HEALING, AND TREATING PATIENTS. I MISS IT BUT HAVE SO ENJOYED MY TIME OFF. IT HAS BEEN 8 MONTHS NOW AND IT'S TIME TO GO BACK.
SURE HOPE THIS FEELING OF FULLNESS LASTS AFTER THIS NEXT WEEK AND ONLY IMPROVES AFTER MY 2ND FILL. ABOUT 22 POUNDS HAVE SLIPPED OFF IN A TIME FRAME OF ABOUT 10 WEEKS. THOUGHT I WOULD HAVE LOST ABOUT 10 MORE IN THIS TIME BUT I KNOW NOW, DIDN'T KNOW BEFORE, THAT UNTIL RESTRICTION OCCURS, I WONT LOSE. JUST DIDN'T KNOW THAT RESTRICTION WOULD TAKE NUMEROUS TIMES. OH WELL. I AM ON THE RIGHT TRACK NOW. THIS HAS BEEN AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE THATS FOR SURE. SO MUCH THAT I DIDN'T EXPECT. GOD, HOW I HATE NOT BEING ABLE TO DRINK WITH MEALS. ALL IT DOES IS REMIND ME HOW THIRSTY I AM ALL THE TIME.
UNTIL ANOTHER TIME.............................

Still struggling at Jan 14, 2008 on January 14, 2008 9:35 am
Have not lost hardly anything. Only about 4 pounds since my first fill 5 weeks ago. Very depressing and frustrating.
Felt a bit constricted the first few days after fill but can eat anything now. Feel like a failure. Did I waste all this money on some kind of 'hype' fix that isn't going to work for me?
Will see Dr Stanish next week. Maybe I can lose some weight before my
2nd fill so Doc wont be as disappointed as me. Damn.

TODAY SUCKS! on November 28, 2007 5:41 pm
TODAY WAS REALLY BAD. IT MUST BE THAT WONDERFUL TIME OF THE MONTH EVEN THOUGH I HAD A HYST BUT HAVE ONE OVARY. I CANT SEEM TO BE HAPPY WITH ANYTHING. I HAVE THE 'BITCHIES BIGTIME.
I HAVE MADE POSTS TO THE FORUM ASKING FOR ADVICE ABOUT THE HUNGER AND THAT LACK OF RESTRICTION POST OP 4 WEEKS. GOD, HOW I NEED AND WANT A 'FILL'. I AM TOLD THAT ALL OF THIS WILL PASS AFTER MY FILL AND THAT THE FEELING OF CONSTANT HUNGER WILL SUBSIDE. I HAVE BEEN ON THE WEB SITE ON AND OFF ALL DAY LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO GIVE ME A LITTLE LIFT IN SPIRITS. I DON'T WANT ANOTHER DAY LIKE TODAY. MY POOR HUSBAND, I HAVE TOLD HIM TO JUST IGNORE ME AND DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO ANYTHING I SAY. TALK ABOUT FEELING SORRY FOR ONE'S SELF- PITTY PARTY OVER HERE IF ANY BODY WOULD LIKE TO JOIN. DAMN. LET'S HOPE I WAKE UP TOMORROW AND FEEL 100% DIFFERENT-BETTER!
NO WEIGHT LOSS SINCE POST OP VISIT ON 17 OF NOVEMBER. GO FOR FIRST FILL ON DEC. 6!!! YA YA YA.
