Surgeon TestimonialOluseun Sowemimo, M.D.When I think of all that Dr. Seun has done for me, it's hard to imagine that a simple thank you would suffice. Yet I cannot help being overwhelmed with sincere gratitude to him and his amazing staff. You see, I suffer from white coat anxiety that has kept me from visiting doctors regularly for over 25 years. It took me two years just to work up the never to even go to a seminar. Luckily it was one of Dr. Seun's, and that was where I had my first real interaction with him, which was truly amazing. Later down the line, I had a great pre-op visit, where he answered all my questions clearly and concisely, and never spoke down to me. He was forthright with his advice and was willing to individualize my plan for my particular needs (both physical and emotional). The next time I saw him was on the day of my surgery. Needless to say, this was not a great day for me due to my anxiety. When I was wheeled into the OR waiting area, I was alone without any other patients in the room, and there was only one nurse there, and she sat on the other side of the room. Being all alone, my anxiety and fear got to the point where I was literally ready to rip the IV out and go home. Luckily after quick visits from a nurse and an anesthesiologist, Dr. Seun showed up. He immediately noticed that I wasn't doing so well, and he took the time to stand there and reassure me that he would take care of me, and that there was nothing to worry about. Honestly, that five minutes he spent with me completely put me at ease. I cannot say enough good about Dr. Seun, and I certainly could never thank him enough for his kindness and for the incredibly high quality of his care. On the day of my surgery, he not only gave me a new tool and an plan to help me combat my obesity, he gave me a sense of confidence in the medical profession that has continued to ease my anxiety. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Seun, and his amazing office staff.

Unfortunately, this introduction will be neither original, nor eye opening. I'm your atypical 43 year old morbidly obese man. Actually, I've been obese my entire life (except for about 10 minutes at age 13 when I grew 6 inches and was only overweight). I've purchased several dozen tickets on the weight loss roller-coaster. I can vividly remember first joining Weight Watchers at 18, and did so just about every year for the next 15 years. Always battling those same 50lbs. Eventually, I gave up on dieting and just got bigger and bigger. In 2003, I married my second wife and decided to do Atkins. As had become my typical cycle, I lost a ton of weight (got down to 245lbs) and then regained it all plus an additional 60lbs over the next five years. In 2009 I decided that I'd struggled enough, and that I wanted to watch my 10 y/o son (from my first marriage), and my 15 y/o and 17 y/o step-sons from my second marriage grow up. My decision led me to WLS. Being petrified of doctors, hospitals, etc., it was singularly the hardest decision on my life, and yet the best.
7 Months Just Flew By! on December 29, 2011 2:57 pm
Without my realizing it, I completely missed my 7 month surgiversary. I've been losing very steadily since the surgery and have lost a total of about 155 lbs since my pre-op diet (about 133 lbs since surgery). I'm not an obsessive weigher, and some weeks I don't weigh myself at all, and other weeks I might weigh myself twice. Because of that, I haven't noticed any stalls or any periods when I wasn't losing a good amount of weight. I'm happy to report that my journey has been blissfully uneventful thus far, and I hope that it continues as such for a long, long time. I've had food (chicken, always damned chicken) get stuck about four times and have thrown up each of those times. I hate throwing up, so those have been four pretty traumatic events. However, they pass so quickly and afterward I feel better so quickly, that I don't fret over them anymore. If food gets stuck, I throw up, feel better, and move onto fluids for a short time. I haven't really thrown myself into the whole exercise thing yet, and am only doing some hiking, some basic weight lifting (toning my arms), and some walking. My plan all along was to wait until the weight loss slowed down drastically, and then kick into full exercise mode, but that hasn't happened yet. I'm still losing a good 12+ lbs each month. I find that I have a lot of restless energy, so I've been cleaning a lot which my wife LOVES. I also take every opportunity to add steps to my day. Whether that means endless trips up and down the stairs or parking at he farthest spot in a parking lot, I make sure that I'm moving much more than I moved before surgery. I'm sure all the extra activity is helping with the weight loss, but I know I'll need to take it to the next level when the losing slows down.
Happy New Year to all, and all my best for a Happy and Healthy 2012!
Jim

Week Six (my first blog post) on July 7, 2011 2:14 pm
Well, I made it to week six, and except for some complications due to constipation, I've had a pretty uneventful time with my WLS. Yes, I'm burping more, and yes, my pouch is one touchy son of a gun, but that is all manageable. When the little fella is acting up, I just concentrate on my liquids and vitamins. When it wants to play ball, I enjoy steak, meatballs, fish, canned veggies, and canned fruits without problems. Last week, I started my Ursodil in order to try and prevent gallstones, and let me tell you, those pills are HUGE. I didn't think I could get them down, but as has become the norm for me post-op, they slid right down without any problems. So far I've lost about 46lbs since my surgery date, and about 70lbs since my before photos. I'm feeling pretty good, but I'm still getting weak pretty quickly when doing any sort of activities. It's not debilitating, just a pain in the posterior.
