Surgeon Testimonial

Robert E. Brolin M.D.
Dr. Brolin performed gastric bypass surgery 25 years ago on 2 people that I know very well. I have known these 2 people for 27 years. They are well and happy. When I first met Dr. Brolin he remembered those patients from 25 years ago including details about their lives! When I met him again at two support group meetings, I was impressed by how he listened to everyone's questions and answered them so thoroughly. He repeated every question to make sure that everyone in the room could hear them. I met him again for my consultation. He was very thorough in explaining risks, complications, and aftercare. The strongest impression I have of Dr. Brolin (besides his surgical abilities) is that he truly and sincerely cares about each patient as an individual and feels great happiness in helping people save their lives. I am so confident to have him do this surgery and know that he will be able to handle any bumps in the road, if any. The support group, which meets the first Monday of each month is awesome. I am looking forward to working closely with Dr. Brolin for many years to ensure a successful outcome!

An extra note--surgery was 3 days ago and it went great! I was released from the hospital after only 1 night! I will always be very grateful to Dr. Brolin and Dr. Nihalani for all they have done for me.

Another note--I am now one year out and went from a size 2X to a size two! I look great AND I feel great! Thank you Dr. Brolin and Dr. Chau for all of the support you've given me during the past year. Knowing that you are always there to listen or answer a question no matter how small means everything--thank you!

February 29, 2008 YAY--An extra day!! What's better...
on February 29, 2008 6:32 am

The best years of my life so far were in my 30s and guess what--I was fat for every single year of my 30s!!

No matter what I can never have such a great 10 years as those--I met my husband 30, got married 31, had a first baby 35, had a second baby 37, and breastfed both of them just up until wls when I was 41!!

All my best years of my life were while I was FAT. You don't need wls or to be thin to have the most wonderful experiences!! I hated being fat at the same time loved myself and my life.

I can't imagine anything as great happening as those years (except for when my kids have babies).

Am I happier thin?--YES YES YES--a million times YES. But did I need to be thin to be happy?--NO. Do I wish I was thin during those 10 wonderful years--YES I DO--but I wasn't. Oh well.

Now it's time for mamma to have some good old fashioned fun!!

My doctor said to keep doing whatever I'm doing because all of my levels are perfect. My HDL is incredible! Here are some of my fasting bloodwork results:

Cholesterol 174                (good range <180)
HDL 93                            (good range >60)
LDL 66                            (good range <100)
Ferritin (iron stores) 73      (good range 13-150)
TSH (thyroid) 0.97            (good range 0.30-5.49)
Sodium 143                       (good range 133-145)
Potassium 5.0                   (good range 3.3-5.4)
Glucose 81                       (good range 70-105)
Total protein 7.3                (good range 6.2-8.6)
Calcium 9.3                       (good range 8.5-10.5)
Iron 67                               (good range 30-160)
Vit B-12 328                       (good range 243-894)
Folate >20 high is okay, you pee out what you don't need                 (good range 3.1-17.5)
Vit D 96.8          (good range 25.1-66.1)

I'll go again in six months and see how I compare. I never watch my carb intake or my protein intake. I just eat small amounts of a huge variety of foods. It seems to be working for me!!

I take TWO of these before bed-- (bottle says 1 per day--but we need more--my surgeon says take two) I love these because they're TINY and two of them has 36mg of iron, and they have no taste all. Oh, and they're cheap--a bottle of 365 of them is less than $10!!

Those of you who have been following my blog know by know that I love my doctors!! Last month I even mentioned Dr. Tucker, the man who brought me into this world! This is my pcp, Dr. Thomas Schwartzer from Somerset, NJ. He's great--and has stuck by me pre-pregnancy all the way through pre-wls and now. He gave me the go ahead to have weight loss surgery and he is the Doctor who gave me the right prescriptions to finally make my neuropathy (that I got eleven days after surgery) go away. Today he gave me the go ahead to have an abdominoplasty on March 13th. My bloodwork came back perfect. He was very impressed with my progress and has given me a lot of encouragement throughout this important year and a half. Here he is!

New Awesome Food!

I got mine at Costco. You can get them online at http://www.cedarlanetogo.com/p-21-cedarlane-burrito-wraps-to-go-16-items.aspx with a variety of other burritos in a "burrito sampler pack" One of the varieties has 350 calories and 35 grams of protein--great to split in half and have as two snacks!

I'm still a big fan of the Boca Breakfast Wrap--if you haven't tried them yet, please do! I reviewed it a few months ago--have a look...

I had no pre-op diet.

Post-op I did full liquid for one week. At my one week post-op appointment Dr. Brolin asked me how I was doing with my soft foods. I said "what soft foods?--I've been on full liquids all week!" I guess I didn't read the directions! I thought I had to do full liquids for a week! The only things I had for my first week were clear chicken broth, profect protein bullets, sugar free ice pops and water.

It was the best thing I've ever done. I'd never gone a full day on liquids, never mind a week. It flushed my body from food--it gave me a break from eating. I needed that.

After a week I started ricotta cheese, sauce, soups, scrambled egg w/cheese, tuna w/mayo and oatmeal. I'm so glad I didn't do that from day one--I waited 41-years for a break from putting food in my mouth. Then I was able to start over again like a newborn baby.

I recommend one week on full liquid for everyone--it was very cleansing for me physically and emotionally and it gave me a great start.

The last time I threw up (before tonight) was from grilled corn that I ate on the beach in the Bahamas (about two weeks ago).

Tonight I had some fish and sweet potato and rice and felt TERRIBLE for about an hour until it all came up in two rounds!

So, I guess at one year out, stuff still happens. It's a nice reminder that everything's still there though (cute and fussy little pouch). My dinner was just too dry and it got stuck. Now I want something sweet, quick! That always makes me feel better. I'm going to have a small piece of Entemann's Crumb Cake that my friend brought over the other day.

I got the results from my mamogram today and everything was great! It's easy to remember to go around Valentine's Day each year. This morning I went to my regular doctor, and had my blood tested for just about everything--all my vitamins, protein, thyroid, everything...so in a few days I'll know about that. I have an appointment with him  on the 25th to make sure he clears me for surgery on the 13th of March. My surgeon, Dr. Brolin gave me the go-ahead already. My pre-op appointment with Dr. Wey, the plastic surgeon is on February 27th--I'll keep you posted! I will take pre-surgery and post-surgery pics as well!

Today is Valentine's Day and we had a great day! The kids went to school. First Steve took me for a mamogram, then we went out for lunch. When the kids came home from school we went out for dinner at a place called Pierres. When we got home we gave the kids presents and cards.

Here's a pic of Benjamin & me--

February 13, 2007 Abdominoplasty one month from...
on February 13, 2008 12:40 pm

I went to two different surgeons for consultations. I really liked the first so much I didn't even want to go to the second, but I knew that would be wrong. I went to the second (who was about 2,500 cheaper) and still decided to stick with the first. I felt much more comfortable there and you can't put a price on that.

This is the man who will be sculpting my body--

Philip D. Wey, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Voted one of the region's "Best Doctors" by New York Magazine and one of the nation's top breast surgeons by Redbook Magazine, Dr. Wey is consistently recognized as one of the best plastic surgeons in the New Jersey/New York Castle Connolly Medical Guide. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has acknowledged his skills as a leader as well as a notable author and lecturer.

New Jersey plastic surgeons - Dr. Wey

The value he places on his patients' individual goals, combined with excellent judgment, surgical artistry, and modern technology have placed Dr. Wey in the forefront of his specialty. The results speak for themselves, evidenced by the countless referrals from his patients and colleagues. Dr. Wey's specialties include cosmetic surgery, breast surgery, liposuction and body contouring.

Dr. Wey was educated at prestigious Brown University and Dartmouth Medical School and completed his rigorous plastic surgery training at New York Hospital - Cornell Medical Center and NYU. He also completed a special fellowship in breast surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York. Dr. Wey is Board Certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has been appointed a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and sits on the Advisory Council for Plastic Surgery of the American College of Surgeons.

I forgot to take a picture with him at the consultation! What kind of blogger am I??! Oh well, I'll take one at the pre-op appointment in two weeks!

I'm down TWO POUNDS this month!! I am very happy about that! If I lose one or two pounds in the following month I'll be happy! I have five pounds more to reach my goal of 100 pounds lost, but I really don't need to lose more--I just want to say I lost 100 pounds, lol. I've lost 95 so far.

I have measured myself every month, but I will skip this month--it gets tiring after a while! I will definitely measure next month!
