Hi
I’m so new to this but found your site today and would love to get more information from others who went through this process.

I’m Juanita from South Africa, 37 years, currently weighing in at 113kg with a height of 1.65m and a bmi more than 40. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. All three are hereditary and I have been on medication from I was 19 years.

I have consider bariatric surgery for the past two years and in June this year decided that this is my only solution against the fat fight I’ve been having since my child hood.

There’s not a pill, liquid, drop or diet programme I have not tried. I even went for hypnosis. All will go great for the first few months, I will shed the kg but after a while I will be back and put on all I have lost plus extra.

I am also an emotional eater, which does not help a lot with the fat war. My work is very stressful and in stress I tend to eat more and will grab anything in front of me.

A bit of a novel about my fight with fat so far.

Bariatric surgery is still very young procedure in South Africa with a lot of bad and negative connotations linked to it. A lot of it stems from LAP band procedures and I am bombarded with all these horror stories from friends and family when I mentioned to them I’m going to do this op.

Luckily I have an amazing GP who had already 9 patients referred to one of the best surgeons in South Africa - Proff Tessa van der Merwe and all of them had successful operations.

I will have my first consultation with the doctors in October i.e. psychiatrist, dietician and Proff Tessa. During these sessions they will all determine if I’m mentally and physically a positive candidate for the procedure.

Why do I want to do this? Not to look like a runway model but to lose the weight for health reasons. I don’t want to follow the same path as my dad, having a heart attack at aged 42. I do understand that this is a live changing procedure and it will affect my social life also.

All very scary but also exciting if I look at the photos of success stories.

I would like it if you guys can help me with the reality after surgery. How was it for you? What came as a shock to you? What are the limitations? Looking back will you do it again?

I would love to hear from you.

Till later J
