Surgeon Testimonial

Michael Thomas, M.D.
Dr. Michael J Thomas is with the Surgical Specialists of Louisiana. He performed a Lap-Band Revision and Gall Bladder removal in 8/05, and he removed the Lap-Band and performed a Sleeve Gastrectomy in 3/08. He is an excellent surgeon, both technically proficient and possessing of a very caring bedside manner. While maybe not at first, now that I have gotten to know him I would rate him a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. (I was used to the Queen of bedside manner, Dr. Rachel Moore, who performed my Lap-Band in 12/03, and ANYONE would have a hard time following her). What constitutes a 10 for me? Technical proficiency first and foremost - he is a national proctor, and is accredited by the ASMBS. His team has a really low complication rate. Second, I hire a medical consultant for medical advice & to answer my questions (of which there are many) and he is very professional and straight-forward with his advice. He does not coddle, but he genuinely cares about the success of his patients. Third, I think he is funny, which is not a solid criteria to be met, but it does help with the meshing of personalities! He is the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Southern Surgical Hospital in Slidell, which is my first choice in local area hospitals. I also liked Omega Hospital in Metairie more than Touro in New Orleans and Lakeview in Covington, as I prefer the atmosphere (and specifically the ratio of nurses to patients) of a smaller hospital.

11 Months Post-Op
on February 9, 2009 5:45 pm
My stats for the Gastric Sleeve at 11 Mo. out:

Surgery Day:                 273 lbs.
11 Month Post-Op:         194 lbs.
Total lost since surgery:    79 lbs!

Inches Lost:
Chest:   -7.25"
Waist:   -9"
Hips:    -14"

Dress Size: from a 28 to 16's.

I can eat approximately 4 - 6 ounces of food at a time. I am eating approximately 1200 - 1400 calories/day. Although I really bumped up salt & over-all caloric intake due to a fainting episode a few weeks ago. My Blood pressure and blood sugar have been low, so we have been trying to address this with diet first. I am also trying to get all my protein in from eating food, vice the protein shakes. It is unbelievable to hear myself protest so vehemently to my doctor that I could not possibly eat all that food -that it is just too much food! To think that at one time I would have laughed profusely had I heard anyone tell me I would one day in the future ever make such a statement!

I also had my metabolism retested - and there is good news! I have raised it from about a negative 27 to a negative 14! That about 145 calories more a day! I hope it is from all that weight lifting, but it probably is from the synthroid more than not.

I am still using Nioxin for the hair loss issue, and I am still taking Biotin for new hair growth.

NSV's: I got off my Insulin Resistance medication! Yea, no more glucophage for me! Now, my blood sugar has been so low that I feel faint at times! And the pendulum swings...
