Surgeon TestimonialAndrew DeWitt, M.D.First impression: Excellent. Caring, patient with questions, very frank about risks. Emphasizes aftercare for best chance of success. Open about his personal statistics with complications/mortality. At some appointments there was a very long wait. I assume this is a combination of overbooking and a complicated and sometimes unpredictable general internal surgery schedule. In the year I have been seeing him, the wait time has been reduced greatly, even running ahead. Regardless, HE'S WORTH THE WAIT.
Impression over time? Still excellent. Very thorough and careful. Very patient and caring, with a great sense of humor.
Office staff: Remarkable! Excellent!
Like least? Sometimes the wait is a pain, but I see that as a hazard of a busy general surgical practice. He's not running a WLS mill, that's for sure!
What should future patients know: You're in good hands with DeWitt & his staff.
Aftercare: Strongly emphasized! Carraway has a bariatric coordinator who works closely with DeWitt's patients, and they have support meetings monthly in addition to other activities and online contact.
How did he address risks: He was open & frank about the risks, nothing sugar coated, both in general, and particular to my health & family history.
Overall rating: 10+++!
Surgical Competence or Bedside Manner Better? Both equally great.

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.Overweight since childhood. First diet in 5th grade. Mother put me on all her diets thru jr & high school - Atkins, Cabbage Soup, Stewardess Diet, Military Diet, Grapefruit Diet, Scarsdale, and Weight Watchers several times. Tried it ALL. Lost a little, then gained it back plus. I also went thru an outpatient eating disorder program. Overeaters Anonymous saved my life initially, helping me get out of compulsive overeating. Once I stopped the compulsive overeating, tho, I was still 200 lbs overweight, and pain & mobility probs made effective exercise impossible.

The Wedding Party Round-Up

Cake at the wedding party! Click this photo to see all my photos on flickr.com.
That's me and my new husband doing the cake thing at our big wedding celebration on 9/29. It was so fantastic, the whole thing. I've been posting the photos from both our trip and the party on my flickr page. If you click any of my photos, you should be taken to my flickr page.
It was just so totally awesome to look out over the hundreds of people gathered and to feel the love of all the wonderful friends who gathered to celebrate with us. All three of my siblings came, and the ones with kids brought all their kids, so it was SUPER special. My two best girlfriends from Atlanta came, along with my old Atlanta neighbor of 12 years, and some old college buddies from the 1980's. Most of my new husband's family came also, so many aunts, uncles, cousins. It was incredible.
We hired a photographer and he got some great photos. But...I cried after looking thru them because somehow there were no photos of my family members! OK there was one photo of my sister and one of her kids with another friend. And another of one of my brothers' wives. But that's it! I have nobody to blame but myself, either. I should have made sure the photographer knew WHO my family members were. It was just such a crazy evening. I guess I assumed that he would seek out my family and be sure to get their photos. But no. So...the pictures are so nice, but I still cry when I look at the album because I am SO disappointed that there is nothing to memorialize the rare gathering of all of my siblings & their kids with me.
We had asked folks to donate to a charity in honor of our wedding instead of buying us gifts, and we ended up raising over 00 for the Bayou Clinic in Bayou La Batre, Alabama! That was totally awesome. We also got some lovely gifts, all of which we love & many of which we are already enjoying.
Now it's on to thank-you notes and all that fun. I hope to get most of that done in the next week or so. And then the wedding and all the wedding-related hoopla will be over and done with.
Weight-wise, that eight pounds I picked up is just making me nuts. I have to say, I have had another epic and painful bout of constipation. Every time this happens, I say "Man, THAT was the worst!" Well I was saying that after this bout for sure! I think I went 4-5 days with no relief, and when I finally did get some relief..let's just say I considered going to the ER for some help, it was that painful! Man! Back on the tomatoes and 100oz/water a day regimen for sure. Somehow when I eat tomatoes every day, and drink about 100oz of fluids, I am able to avoid this problem. Hopefully when I weigh this week I will see more encouraging results. You'll be the first to know!
