Surgeon Testimonial

Wade Barker, M.D.
The first surgeon's office I went to told me that they contacted my insurance and I was approved to go ahead with the other visits. After putting me through 5 visits, a lot of money, the insurance calls me and says no one called them. I have to start over and can not have the Lap Band. The insurance will pay for the Gastric and I have chosen Dr. Wade Barker of Dallas to be my new surgeon. I am still on the Healthy Weight coaching program and will not be able to meet the doctor until April. I am in hopes of having the surgery in early July! Will update later!

Update!! I finally got to meet my new surgeon! Dr. Wade Barker! I love him! He is wonderful and was very informative as we talked and asked questions about the RNY surgery. My husband asked him a lot of questions too, so that put him more at ease with the upcoming surgery as well.
Dr. Wade Barker's staff is awesome! Each person was friendly and kind that I came in contact with. They all did their part in making me feel right at home and showed me that it is all going to be taken care of. No more mix ups last with the last surgeon! I will be having the surgery done at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and that's just what I wanted! Dr. James Davidson will be Dr. Barker's assistant and that's great too because Dr. Davidson was my surgeon 17 years ago for another surgery. I have two great surgeons performing my surgery now!

Here we go!!! Surgery date, July 14th!

Staples out and on soft foods!
on July 24, 2008 8:14 am

I saw Dr. Barker on Tuesday after Earline removed my staples!  I am doing great!  He even added soft foods to my menu!  I was down 19lbs since beginning this journey, but as of today, I am down 22lbs!  This is so awesome and I am just about off of the insulin! One shot at bedtime and Metformin was all I took yesterday. My Endro will be in shock when I see him the end of August!  I can't wait!  He doesn't know I had the RNY......yet!  I didn't want any negative opinions from anyone, so I didn't tell him. I got enough of those as it was!  I feel fantastic and loving every moment of this. I put it in God's hands and he handled the whole thing for me!  No pain, no problems! Yeah!

4 Days out and doing fine!
on July 18, 2008 8:40 pm
No laying around in the bed for me!  No way!  I have walked around the house, played on my computer, watched some movies, talked on the phone and did small things here and there. I feel no pain! I have consumed my liquids without any problems at all. No nausea or vomiting have I experienced!  People keep asking me....Are you sure you had RNY surgery??  I say....Yep...I have the staples to prove it!  They are just unsure do to how well I am and able to get up and down without any pain. They try to help me, protect me and sometimes baby me. The only protection I need is when the grandchildren forget that Nanna just had surgery and they come running full speed towards my stomach!  Then I put up my hands to guard them off. I don't have any pain and I don't want any either!  LOL!

Left the hospital Wed. at Noon!
on July 18, 2008 8:33 pm
The surgery actually was not until 6pm, but all went well!  Dr. Barker did not find a lot of damages from past surgeries as he expected, so he moved right along and did a great job!
I still can't believe I had this surgery!! The pain is nothing! I feel fantastic and I am on my way to a healthier, happier life!  I was able to get up by myself right after they brought me back to my room from recovery!  Amazing!  The nurses were also amazed!  The incision areas are a little sore, but I was not in pain at all. The pain shots only made me sleepy, but the stomach area remained sore.   I was happy to be able to come home so soon.

This day has finally come!  After almost of year into this wait, this is it!! No turning back now!! Today at 3:00pm, I will have my RNY!  I am excited to be where I am and plus have lost 10 lbs over the past week on the liquid diet!   I am looking forward to greater things and improved health! Getting off of my insulin is my biggest joy!  This past week, I was able to drop almost all of it due to very little carbs.  I know from here on out, it will only get better!!  See you on the loser's bench soon!

Tomorrow is the day!
on July 13, 2008 3:44 pm

Well, I got my nails and pedicure done today!  I went to the grocery store and restocked up on broths, creamed soup, liquid yogurts and SF popsicles!! Oh boy!   I have done all the wash and the house is in order for my down time.  Hubby can manage the rest while I recover.   I am about to pack my bag and have it ready. I still need to find out exactly what time my surgery is because it was postponed to the afternoon. I think around 2:30pm. I also need to find out what time I am expected to be there.  See you on the loser's bench soon!

My Story

My story is like most others, but I was not a heavy child growing up.  I didn't really start putting on the weight until my first pregnancy. I gained 50 pounds with my first child and was never able to lose it and only gained from there on out. With my second child, eight years later, I had been dieting and had lost about 40lbs and then gained 30 back with the pregnancy.  Then came the multiple surgeries....., tubal, hysterectomy, wound closure surgery due to that one busing open, hernia surgery from that one, repair and clean up due to Mylar Mesh being inserted and finally removal of the Mylar Mesh due to allergic reactions and the wound not ever healing.  So, I have been through it!  During the last of the surgeries and all of the infections, I became diabetic.  I lost a lot of weight from the intitail shock to my body, like 80lbs really fast!  Then I leveled off and after starting on insulin shots, I only gained more from there on out. I am currently on Apidra with each meal. Carb to insulin ratio with each shot.  Lantus at bedtime of 65units. I have added Byetta twice a day. Overall, I am on six shots a day. I am hoping this surgery gets me off all of the shots!!  I also take Metformin 1000mg twice a day.  I have high blood pressure and cholestrol.  I am so looking forward to dropping all or most of all these meds.  That will be a miracle in itself for me.  I take lots of vitamins too, so re-adjusting those will be a bit of task, but it can be done. I get lots of support from the different WLS groups that I have joined. They are all so very helpful.  I have a great support group here at home as well. My husband and both daughters are excited for me. I have three beautiful grand children that I absolutely adore and they are close by, so I see them almost everyday!  It is awesome to watch them grow up. My husband says that the reason they call them grandchildren, is because it's grand to see them come and grand to see them go. LOL!! I don't feel that way at all!
