Surgeon Testimonial

Donovan Teel II
Dr. Teel is incredibly caring, supportive and takes however much time you need to answer questions. I never go to an appointment without something to ask or tell him...and he always listens. His office staff is great and I wouldn't have gone anywhere else.

Edited to add: Best aftercare in the whole world. I am a high maintenance but very successful bandster and I have had 18 total adjustments (11 fills 7 unfills) and I have it down to a science. They help you work your band, and the rest is on you! I am sure the aftercare is excellent for other surgeries as well.

I started my journey in May 2008 by attending an infosession at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton Ohio.  Dr. Maguire was the speaker and I felt he pushed people toward RNY and DS rather than lap-band but my mind was already made up.  I made an appointment with Dr. Teel and many appointments with different doctors, psychologists, etc...later, I had surgery on 8/5/08.  My surgery is the best thing I ever did for myself; I have been speaking at WL Seminars for PMBA since Dec 2008.  I reached goal in 9 months and I have maintained my weight loss for about a year now, I went from a 22/24 to a 2/4.  I am training for a half marathon including swimming, elliptical, running and weight training in order to be a competitive athlete.

My Story

I was a normal weight kid, pretty thin for whom puberty hit like a freight train.  The body popped out at 12 and the metabolism went into reverse.  Not having sports or activities as part of my life, weight gain started by 14.  I went from 122 at 14 (adult height '5"7) to 175 graduating HS, which at the time was a 14 (with vanity sizing, I should easily be a 12 @ 175 this time around!)   I went to college bounced up higher to 192.  When I went for my free birth control and that damn scale said 192, the 19 yr old me freaked out...so I went on a workout binge and worked out 6-7 days a week at the gym, dropped 17 lbs in 3 weeks and kept going until I was down to 147 which I decided was damn good enough.   Then I moved in with my now DH and started to gain, gain, gain until I was up to 275 when we got married 10 years ago!   Then I lost 90 lbs on Atkins, got to 185, was a small 14, even bought one size 12, then emotional eating and my DH illness....I was at 249 by the time I conceived my daughter.  After she was born I lost then bounced up to 281.  Got down to 254 w exercise then did WW, down to 228, then back to college...and the weight came back on...did Atkins again, lost, then gained.   Following year, did swimming, down to 260 prox, then more emotional issues, back up to 277, got pregnant with son, kept weight fully under control for pregnancy, never topped 300 although I know I came close!  Back down to 274 after baby weight came off.  Stuck there until March, then only lost 6 lbs, while in a weight loss incentive program @ work, so went to an infosession on WLS knowing I only wanted the band, considered other surgeries but stuck with the band (great decision!).  So had to hold my weight loss until I qualified because of strict BMI based req, I was at 265 @ infosession, but down to 260 for insurance submission, didn't want to jeopardize.  So I ate for a few weeks, hating it because I was supposed to be losing for my health....got approval on 7/11 and started losing again.  Down to 245 for surgery Aug 5, 2008 but my lap-band journey had already begun in May.  The main thing I know is that my yo-yoing is over.
