Surgeon Testimonial

Monte Schwartz, M.D.
I am so happy that I chose Dr. Schwartz as my surgeon. He is confident, knowledgeable and caring and I highly recommend him. I only saw him once before surgery and didn’t have many questions because I’d done so much research on this. My surgery happened within 10 days of seeing him (I was self-pay and was able to get the tests done quickly). He has a structured aftercare program, which I like. I feel better knowing what I’m supposed to do each day. It takes the guess-work out of things for me. His office staff is friendly, caring and efficient. I liked them. They made me feel welcome from the moment I called to make an appointment. And Karen, his nurse coordinator . . . phenomenal. Very caring, friendly and knowledgeable. I love her!

Who am I and why am I here?

I'm a 47 (darn birthdays) year old woman who is sick and tired of my excess weight controlling my life. I’ve been overweight most of my life, but the last 10-15 years or so, my weight has really soared. Like many other people here, I’ve tried practically everything – many diets and programs, acupuncture, hypnosis, support groups, etc. None of them worked for me for long, if at all. I looked into having surgery several years ago. I had all the tests/evals done, and then found out my surgery would not be covered by insurance. At the time, I could not afford to self-pay, but can do so now. I’m looking forward to a whole new life!

13 months out

It's been 13 months since my RNY.  Everything is still great!  I've only lost 6 pounds in the last 3 months.  I've haven't lost anything in at least a month, but I measured myself today and I've lost 3.5 inches in the last month alone and 7 in the last 3 months.  So while I'd love to lose pounds, I'm ok since I'm losing inches.  I'd still like to lose 15 pounds, though people are starting to tell me I look like I need to eat something. I weighed 149 this morning, so I certainly am not too thin (I'm 5'4").  I wear a size 10 in most things, though occasionally I need a 12 in something.

I am struggling with shopping - in a good way. I am well known for my shopping habits.  I've always loved to shop, but I have so many choices now that I'm smaller that I'm confused about where to look, where to start and which designers I like.  OMG!  I know, what a problem to have.  I was in Mervyn's the other day and there were so many clothes in my size, I could only look at a few and then I was overwhelmed.  I feel the same way in Dillards.  Macy's was a little better, but I was there a LONG TIME looking at clothes.  This feels very strange to me . . . lol.

In some ways, life is so different for me now, but in others, it is the same.  I still don't have any friends that are really active. I would love that.  I also have very few single friends and no one that lives near me in Sahuarita.  I'm still hoping for that.  As this area builds up, maybe I'll meet more people like me out here.

In 2 weeks I'll be in Maui.  I'm really looking forward to this trip. In addition to hanging out by water, I'm really looking forward to being a normal-sized person on this trip.  That excites me so much . . . knowing I will fit everywhere and that I won't be stared at for being so large.  I bought 2 new swimsuits to take with me, plus some long water shorts to cover my thighs. I'm still not comfortable enough to let everything hang out :).

Until next time . . .

It's been 10 months
on May 28, 2007 2:09 pm

The time has gone by so quickly. It's hard to believe a year will soon be gone.  Still no complications.  I feel very blessed.  The only problem I've had is constipation and I've learned how to manage that with roughage, Miralax and stool softeners.

My weight loss has slowed over the last few months, but I'm still losing.  I'm wearing a size 12 now, but I bought size 10 pants last night at a discount store in town.  I thought I'd try them on and see how close I was, but to my surprise, they buttoned and zipped!  Now, they're tighter than I wear my pants, so I won’t be wearing them out of the house for a few weeks, but THEY BUTTONED and ZIPPED!!!! A size 10!  For so many years, that was a goal size for me, so this is a big deal.  I'm at 155 this AM and would like to lose another 15-25 pounds, so it looks like I'll be getting into an 8 or a 6 before I stop.  Wow . . .

I had a great time in Europe .  Ate too much, drank too much (relatively speaking), and walked a lot.  Lost 5 pounds.  One of the women I was with who didn’t know I had WLS said “You don’t eat much, do you?”  I had a blast.  I have a few small trips scheduled over the summer. My next big trip is to Maui in September. I'll need new clothes for that trip . . . what a shame :).

I do wish my support group had a good clothing exchange.  The exchange is on hold again and my surgeon didn't do many surgeries here before mine, so I wouldn't have many clothes to choose from, but I would love to have some size 8s and 10s.  I LOVE shopping, but I hate to spend a ton of money on clothes that will be too big within a month or 2.  Gosh, what a problem to have :)
.  I am blessed.

Almost 9 months out
on April 13, 2007 5:20 pm

Wow . . . time is really going by quickly.  I've lost  81 pounds now.  I've been stalled for a few weeks and trying not to get discouraged.  That's been happening more and more lately . . . I stay the same for a few weeks, and then I drop a few pounds.  I can pour myself into a size 12 now, but it's a little snug, so I'm still wearing my 14s.  Any time now, I should fit into a 12 comfortably :). I bought my first blouse at Anthropologie last weekend . . . that’s been one of my goals from the beginning.  It was a size 12 . . .yay!

I'm going to Europe next week and will be gone for a few weeks. This will be the thinnest I have ever been as an adult on vacation.  I'm looking forward to fitting in the airline seats and bus seats, etc. I may even have a friend take some pictures of me in Europe this time, instead of just taking pictures of the sights.  I have been too embarrassed in the past to have pics taken of me.  I have a little fear about food and water, but I'll have to plan and be careful.  I'm also taking a bunch of Unjury samples with me to make sure I get my protein in.

I'd like to lose another 20-30 pounds. I'm not sure where I'll stop, but I hope I'll know when I get there.  I'm happy with my weight loss so far and try not to compare myself with others who lose faster, but it's hard. I spent some time in the other building at work last week and was the talk of the floor according to people there.  It was a huge ego boost.

It's Been 6 Months . . .
on January 21, 2007 8:04 pm

My 6 months surgiversary was this month.  I've lost 67 pounds.  I struggled a bit during the holidays and my weight loss slowed, but I'm back on track.

Things are still going well for me.  No complications.  I have blood work drawn in a few days and I'm curious to se how I'm doing.  I feel great!

I had a few WOW moments the past few weeks.  Last week, I went shopping with a friend and was shopping in the "normal" section a few minutes before it hit me . . . wow!  It never even occurred to me to go to the women's section.  I'm in a 16!  And it's not tight.  Size 14 . . . I'll be seeing you very soon!

I'm so glad I had this surgery.  I feel so much better about myself, though I will say that I might be a bit vain.  I don’t always recognize myself and am constantly looking at myself in the mirror or in any reflection and thinking: "Wow . . . that's me!"

4 Month Surgiversary
on November 18, 2006 12:37 pm

November 18, 2006

Wow . . . today is my 4 month surgiversary. I’m down 54 pounds. I’d love to have lost more than that, but I’ll take what I can get. I’m following my surgeon’s and nut’s instructions and started as a light-weight, so I know my weight loss will not be as fast as some I read about. I also have had no complications, no diarrhea, etc.  My surgeon wants us to get in 80 grams of protein and not count calories, but I’m wondering if I eat too many carbs. I eat protein first, but I keep reading about this and want to take a look at my intake. I’ve been tracking my food at fitday for a few weeks, so this shouldn’t be hard. I’m losing about 2 pounds a week, but would love to lose more J.
