Surgeon Testimonial

John Ryland Scott M.D., F.A.C.S.
My first impression of Dr. Scott was That I was extremely impressed. (Which doesn't happen often as I am always skeptical about a doctor's true reason for practicing as well as his/her competence.) He seemed genuine and compassionate and really seemed to love his job. His office staff were also very nice, caring and professional. Aftercare (excercising, eating right etc.) was stressed strongly by the entire staff. Dr. Scott requires follow-up with the dietitian in his office for one year. Also you have periodically do a food journal and excercise log. The complications of this surgery were explained to me and all my questions were answered. I also would like to say that Dr. Scott was very competent and his bedside manner was also very good. I don't like very many people but I did like him. Dr. Scott's PA was also very nice. He was attentive to questions and answered them thorouhgly. Overall, Dr. Scott and his staff were very professional.

Two Weeks Out
on January 3, 2010 6:48 am

Well, I am 2 weeks out as of tomorrow from gastric bypass surgery. I have started to excercise but I am not aloud to lift over 15 lbs for a month so I have only been walking on my treadmill. I feel pretty good overall right now. My steri-strips are coming off slowly but surely and revealing some very small incisions that are nicely scabbed over and seem to be healing well. I have been on pureed foods since I left the hospital and will remain on them until I see my surgeon on 01/21/10. At that point I should be switched to soft foods and i can't wait!!!! I will be nice to be returning to something slightly resembling normal. Also i should be released to normal activity at that time as well, so I should be able to lift again. That means that i will only be on lift restriction for 1 day of clinicals only. YAY!!!!

Surgery
on December 25, 2009 6:07 am
I had my surgery on the 21st and I had an uneventful surgery.  When I came out of surgery I was only having moderate pain and was able to walk as soon as they took me up to my hospital room. Since then I have had some pain but nothing excrutiating. I fell pretty good as of now. I have been taking pain meds but usually not until I start feeling sore. I have also been tolerating the pureed foods that I have been eating. I am having trouble knowing when I am full because I dont ever feel hungry. Hopefully that problem will correct itself. I am still learning though.

The Big Day Is Close at Hand
on December 20, 2009 2:11 pm
Tomorrow morning is my surgery. I am a bundle of nurves right now. I am excited that the day is finally here after almost a year of going through hoops to get this surgery. I honestly cant wait until I am able to start eating pureed foods on wednesday. I am so hungry right now. Oh, well, it could be worse. I have lost 8 lbs and a total of 16 inches since I weighed in at the surgeon's office the last time. I can't wait to lose more!!!

Got My Date!!!!!
on November 22, 2009 1:41 pm
I went back to the dietician on November the 11th and got the go ahead from her for the surgery.  The surgeon's office filed my insurance on the 16th. I called my insurance on the 18th and was told that I was approved for surgery.  On the 19th I scheduled my pre-op and my surgery. My pre-op is on Decmber 1st at 8:20 am and my surgery date is the 21st of December. I will start my pre-op shake diet probably on the 7th of December and will have to do that for 2 weeks. I am starting to get excited as I have about 30 days left until my surgery.

The Dietician Seems to Be Making My Life Hard
on November 7, 2009 6:05 am
Well since I have last posted I went to the nutrition class and paid 305 dollars to see a dietician that only my surgeon is requiring me to see. Anyway my 1st appointment with her was on the 27th of October and after that the surgeons office was supposed to file my insurance but when I got there she told me that I was supposed to eat like after the surgery and that this was wrong and that was wrong and this girl was maybe 21 years old and had never been  fat a day in her life. Needless to to day she told me that i need to come back in 2 weeks and if everything looks good then  then they will file my insurance.  So now I have to pay 32 dollars on top of the 305 she just got from me. My appointment is on Novermber 11th. Hopefully this time they will file my insurance.

My Story

I have been heavy most of my life.  I was an overweight child and I got picked on alot.  Being picked on by other children drove me to eat.  By the time I was 13, I weighed 180 lbs. and I was only 5 foot 2 inches tall.  I wore a size 16 and I felt miserable.  I started to lose weight after that.  In the summer between 8th and 9th grade, I lost 50 lbs.  I kept the stayed the same weight for a while and one day I realized I had lost 10 lbs.  I was about 16 then.  I was 5 foot 2 inches tall and weighed 120.  I was thin and couldn't really accept it because in my mind I was fat still.  I kept the weight off until I was 19 years old.  I was thin for 5 years.  At 19, I began to gain weight.  In one year I gained about 90 lbs.  I got up to 210 and I felt very bad.  I just felt drained all the time.  So I decided it was time to do something different. I started dieting and excercising almost daily.  At about 200 lbs I switched from a 1200 calorie a day diet to Atkin's diet.  I eventually got down to 170 and I hit a major plateau that I just couldn't break.  I eventually gave up.  After a few months, I started to put on weight again.  I then went to my doctor and was referred out to a dietician.  I went to the dietician for about a year and a half and still couldn't break 170.  So I gave up on her too.  I again started to gain after a couple of months and this time when I went to the doctor, I asked him for diet pills.  He reluctantly prescribed them to me and I started those.  After about 3 or 4 months, I only had about a 10 lb weight loss so I gave up on those.  I then let some time go by and I again gained weight.  This time more quickly.  After a while, I was up over 200 lbs again.  This time I went to Weight Watchers.  I did weight watchers for about 6 months.  I didn't really lose any weight.  (There were numerous other home diets that went on in between times of me reaching out for outside help).  I gave up on that too.  Now I am 225 and a member at a gym that I don't go to.  I'm tired all of the time.  I've had reproductive problems.  I also have plantar faciitis and heel spurs in both feet.  Oh yeah, I also have some insulin resistance.  I am at a point that I am fed up with doing it my way and I feel it is high time I surrender to someone else's.  For me gastic bypass is the best option.
