Surgeon Testimonial

Frederick Johnson, M.D.
I think Dr. Johnson was a great surgeon, he seemed genuinely concerned for you as a person and I felt he did a fabulous job. I was in the hospital from Thursday am to Saturday afternoon. I stayed an extra day because of a little extra blood loss, but it was just a precaution which I preferred to being ushered out the door. He even came in Saturday morning to see how I was and let me know that I could go home. He was a great source of information and has been doing this surgery for quite some time. They also took my gall bladder at the same time and I think that was a good choice as well. His office has a very structured after care program plus when you are released from the hospital he gives you his pager number to call him if you have any trouble or questions. They make sure you are very prepared and ready for surgery. Also the nurses at the hospital were awesome, many of them have had this surgery and understand how you are feeling, they were just great! I would recommend the Unity Hospital in Fridley, MN to anyone and everyone in the area!!

1 Year
on August 13, 2008 6:22 pm
A whole year already~ wow it seem's like yesterday that I had surgery.  I look at pictures and hardly recognize myself.  I started my journey in January of 2007 at 352lbs, the day of surgery I was 297lbs and today I am currently 208lbs.  A total loss of 144lbs.  A whole person!  I feel so good it is almost hard to put in words, the only thing I still struggle with is my hair!!! If you look at pic's you can see I had really long hair before surgery.  I just cut it because it was growing back and the old hair looked so thin.  So now I have short hair, but it's cute and looks better than it has in months so that is a good thing.  When I have my official one year appointment I will take new pictures and update a bit more.  This was just a small update for now!!

6 Month Check up
on February 23, 2008 6:38 am
Well I had my 6 month check up yesterday and everything is going good!  I cannot believe the differnce in myself when I look at pictures.  I still have a hard time believing that I look like I do!  I went from 352lbs at my heaviest and 297 on my day of surgery to 226lbs now.  I have lost 71lbs in 6 months and SOOO many inches my hips started at 63inches and they are now 49 inches so a loss of 14 inches!  And my waist started at 54 inches and it is down to 39 so 15 inches gone there!  I can't remember my arm and thigh off hand~ but those 2 i do!  It is amazing how much a person's body changes in 6 months.  I started at a BMI of 56 and I am around 36 now.  So a loss of 20 points! I am actually under the requirement to get the surgery now~ AMAZING! I have had so many wow moments in the last 6 months it is hard to believe.  Just little things like sitting cross legged or running up stairs to having people tell me how awesome I look. I currently weigh less than what I was at 13yrs old!!  Now that is a huge wow moment for me!  I look in the mirror and sometimes can't believe it is me looking so small.  I am just amazed at the differnce in the way I feel and the way I look.  I am thrilled with the changes and look forward to spring when I can get out and walk outside!  I just know that I never realized how bad I felt a year ago until I think about how good I feel now.  I know I have to update pic's but I just haven't gotten around to it! TERRIBLE I KNOW!! I am going to attempt to do that soon~ The only thing I truly hate right now is the hair loss~ althought it is finally starting to grow back.  I had very fine thin hair to begin with and now you can see right through to my scalp~ I cut it shorter to help with how much it seemed like I was loosing.  But now I just have super thin short hair!! LOL  Well the best part is it is starting to grow back and hopefully by my 9 month check up I will have some hair covering my scalp again! I will write more when I put some new pics on.  Talk to you all later

Almost 3 Months!
on November 16, 2007 1:16 pm
Wow has the time flown!  I am almost 3 months out I have
my 3 month check up in 2 weeks.  I am hoping to lose 5lbs
by then because I will have lost 100lbs since my first nurse visit.  I was 352lbs at my highest and when I weighed in the first time with my nurse I was 345lbs.  So I am currently at 250lbs(yeah 100lbs lost) but for it to show at the hospital it will need to be 245lbs!  I am so excited right now for that to come, I have only lost about 15lbs this month so I am in a bit of a stall, but I know I am still loosing inches.  I can feel it in my clothes so I am not worried about it.  But I really do want that number to say 245 when I check in on the 30th!!  I feel fabulous, better than I have in years.  I have more energy
and my knees hurt less.  My blood pressure pills went away and has been under control.  There are so many things I am thankful for that this surgery has given me.  Most of them include just feeling better!  The fact that I can go out in the woods with my DH and walk around and not have to sit in
the truck and watch him :(  I can almost keep up with him now!!  I also only weigh a little bit more than him now.  I
have always weighed more than him so I am excited to be less!!  I just can't imagine things getting  better right now
but I know that they will!  I will post again soon once I have
had my 3 month check up!!  Talk to you all later  Kristi

October already!
on October 2, 2007 8:05 am
I can't believe it is October.  This year has flown by for sure.  I went to the informational session on December 15th 2006.  I had my very first nurse appt on January 8th 2007.  I had to do 6 months of supervised weight loss and I also wanted to take time off work when there was less people gone for vacation.  So I chose to have my surgery in late August.  August 23rd to be exact.  I started my Journey at 352lbs, I can hardly remember what it feels like to be that heavy.  On my surgery date I weighed in at 297 so I had lost 55lbs.  Which was fabulous, I was so happy with myself.  But I knew for it to stay off and lose more I needed this surgery for my life.  Well here I am just about 5 weeks out and I am at 264lbs.  A total weight loss of 88lbs.  I am so close to losing 100 that I can hardly believe it.  I am happier than I have ever been, I already feel so good that I can't imagine feeling better.  I currently weigh less than I did in High School.  When I was 14 I weighed 240lbs so it won't be long and I will be under that weight.  I am so thrilled I can hardly believe it.  The only small downfall I see right now is the constant clothes hanging off of me!! LOL  But hey if that is the only thing I can take that.  I told my husband that I am not buying anything new until my pants won't stay on anymore.! LOL  Well this was long but I just really wanted to record my feelings at this time.  I have never been happier in my life, even my husband and I are closer and we were very close to begin with!  So I feel like we have almost started over, we are so in love these days I feel like a newlywed!! LOL  Well thanks to this board and my family I have had great amounts of support and I will NEVER forget it!  Kristi

Well it is almost hard to believe but I am almost a week out from surgery.  I have been doing quite well, I am quite strict with myself and have had no trouble getting all the water in.  I can drink milk with no problem and have been having crystal lite and jello and soup broth as my source of nutrition right now!  I also have been splitting a protein bullet between my three "meals" so that I am getting in 42g of Protein with that and the eight ounces of milk gives me 8g so I am getting about 50.  The Dr told me I could take my Vitamins as long as I was getting in my water so I am taking those too.  I actually have almost no pain at all, it is more a tired muscle feeling than anything.  I haven't taken any pain meds for 2 days now and actually feel much better without them.  The most amazing thing for me so far is the fact that I don't have to take my Blood pressure meds, since surgery a week ago I haven't taken any medication and my BP is fine, in fact better than it was taking the meds!!!!  So here I am feeling great with the exception of really being bored sitting at home!!  Thanks everyone here for all the help pre-op and I am sure you will all me as much help post op!

My Story

07/03/2007

I am actually in Wisconsin but my surgeon and everything else is in Minnesota. I just wanted everyone to know that.

I started my weight loss journey in December of 2006.  I have been trying to lose some of the weight on my own and getting myself mentally prepared for surgery.  I was approved in Mid May and have scheduled my date for August 23rd, 2007. Mostly due to work schedules.  I have decided that I want to be as prepared as possible for such a life changing event.  I have been exercising and trying to eat better.  I started at a weight of 352lbs in December(I am 5' 7") and I am currently about 303lbs.  Almost 50lbs lost but I am at a standstill currently.  I just hope to maintain that and maybe lose a bit more before surgery.

I have been overweight my entire life, or as long as I can remember.  I know when I was 12 I was 150lbs and when I was 16 I was 240lbs.  I have only went up from there, my highest weight was December of 2006 and that is when I decided it was time for me to make some drastic changes before I was unable too.  I was 352lbs and i REFUSED!!  To weigh any more than that.  I am really looking forward to being under 200lbs.  My personal goal weight is 198lbs!  If I can just get under that I will weigh less than when I was between 14 and 16 years old, and I am 32 so more than half of my life I have been over weight.  I have had high blood pressure since I was 22 years old, and on meds since then.  Diabetes runs in my family and I am sure that is something I would be getting soon as well.  All I know is I can' t wait for  a healthier me, I can't imagine being able to run or climb stairs or any other number of things with out being out of breath, or simply not being able to do them.  I can't wait to go back to Valley Fair and ride the rides!!  Fit in an airplane seat, and just plain be healthier!
