Surgeon TestimonialRoger De La Torre, M.D.I first met Dr. De La Torre around May 2007 at his seminar at DePaul Hospital. He was very friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. He had been doing this surgery for over 10 years and I was very impressed with him and his staff.
I officially meet with him on September 26, 2007 for Post Op.
Depaul emphasis aftercare as essential to the programs success.
De La Torre did address the risks of surgery and the risks if not having surgery.
I would highly rate him at this time.

Welcome to my profile. My name is Andrea and I'm tired of being overweight and feel the WLS is my answer. I don't have any children and haven't found that special someone to spend my life with. I still get some prospects but haven't found that special man. I have put my life on hold because I felt that my weight has been holding me back. I am willing to take this journey because my life depends on it. I owe this to myself. This time next year I'm going to be a whole new person with a whole new life.

84 lbs Gone Forever!!! on September 23, 2008 4:33 pm
Hello Family, it's been a few months since I've updated my progress. As of last Saturday, I've lost a total of 84 lbs and I feel Terrific!! I currently weigh 145 lbs. I have 25 lbs to goal and I will try harder to make this goal by my one year, which is November 28, 2008. I have a little over 2 months to lose it. I haven't really been working the program because I've been so busy working on a new business. I've even been drinking sodas. Not much though because I really can't tolerate them. I need to start exercising more. I rarely do anything but run around. I did have a "wow" moment a few weeks back when I had gone to Walmart and bought a few jogging suits in size 8/10. I'm officially between a 9/10. I was at Dillards yesterday and could actualy fit a size 8 dress jacket. Wow!!! I haven't been in a size 8 in over 15 years. My goal is to wear a 4/6 comfortably. This journey is amazing and takes you on extreme highs and a few lows but I would recommend this surgery to anyone after they have learned the facts...I love my life now..I'm not self conscious any longer when it comes to meeting people and the fellas are always trying to talk to me..I LOVE IT!!! I will update my picture in the next week so the family can see my progress!!

65 lbs gone!!! on May 10, 2008 9:14 pm
Hello Everyone....haven't blogged in a while and figured I need to give an update. I'm now weighing in at 164 lbs and my start weight was 229 lbs. I'm really happy about my weight loss even though it seems as if it's kind of slow. I'm still not exercising the way I should. Where can you purchase some motivation? I'm going to start doing resistant exercises because my arms are starting to get a little bit flabby but nothing I can't live with. I can definitely try to tone up more but I really don't have a lot of flabby skin but I would like my weight loss to become more significant and drop more sizes. I'm down to about a size 10/12 in pants and a large in tops. I really need to buy more clothes. I'm still wearing some of my 16 pants and they are falling off of me. I even had to pin a pair on the other day. My 2x shirts are falling off me too. I'm going to post more current pictures because I don't even look the same anymore. Well...actually I'm starting to recognize the person I was over 18 years ago and I love her look..I'm so glad that we're re-acquainted. Otherwise; everything is going well and I'll keep everyone posted.

45 lbs down!!! on February 10, 2008 5:35 pm
Finally...I'm able to update my profile...I've been really busy working 12 hour days (trying to earn extra cash). It's weird, before you have the surgery..it's like your life stops...but after the surgery..it's like you're running a marathon. I got on the scale today and noticed that I lost 45 lbs. Yippi!!! My weightloss has been in a slow smooth pace but I need to energize it up with some exercise. No flabby hanging skin...but that can change too..so I need to get busy and start walking and using my bands..I went to Goodwill and stocked up on some suits and pants. The clothes were fabulous and I even bought a suit in a size 6 because I know some time this year, I will slide right into it.. People at work are still complimenting me everywhere I go. They say things like, "wow...you're still losing" I want to say. "I better be still losing because I can barely eat anything" I went to Red Lobster twice and ate the salad and one shrimp. I ended up giving my meal away. I am throwing away so much food because my eyes are way bigger than my stomach. Sometime after I cook something, I eat a few bites and still can't finish the meal. I'm eating alot of grapes, strawberries, peaches and yogurt. I also drink about 52 grams of a proten drink that I paid $14 for at Walmart. I'm working toward trying to lose another 15 lbs by the end of this month. My stomach has gone down a lot and my face is so much smaller. I can wear some 14 pants now. By the end of the month I want to be able to get in some 12's. I'm starting to lose hair now. So I bought some hair vitamins, zinc sulfate and vitamin E. Thank you family for being there for me because this is a battle that you cannot go in alone.

5 Week Follow Up!! on January 3, 2008 6:08 am
I had my 5 week follow up today with Dr. De la Torre. I lost 25 lbs. I can finally start seeing some results and others around me are too. I was a little nervous because my weight loss is so slow. But it seems as though I lost 5 lbs overnight. My clothes are fitting me a lot better. I am able to get into some of my 14/16 tops and I can get into some 16 pants but can't button them up yet. I need to start exercising immediately. I finally found all of my Firm DVD's, Power 90 DVD's and Slim in 6. Isn't that pitiful? I have all the tools and don't use them. I think I"m going to start the Slim in 6 today. I really want to lose another 10 lbs before I go back to work. (which is in about a week) The slim in 6 is designed to help you drop a dress size in 7 days. However you work out 6x a week for 6 weeks. I have this really nice size 14 pant suit that I have never worn and I would like to fit comfortably into it this month. That's my goal for January. To be a size 14 and lose another 15 lbs and start firming up.

Surgery went well!! on December 7, 2007 5:37 pm
Haven't blogged in a while so I want to keep everyone posted. My surgery date was on Nov 28th at 9am. Arrived at the hosp at 7am and the nurses started prepping me around 8am. Surgery began at 9:25am. The doctor was a tad bit late and I was getting nervous. Not for the surgery but in case he didn't make it and I had to reschedule. Around 11am, I woke up in the recovery room literally gasping for air. I did have an air tube in my nose but I felt as though I couldn't breath. The nurse was like, "that's the anethesia and it will wear off in about an hour, I was thinking, "I'm going to die in the recovery room because this nurse doesn't care". About an hour later I could breath as normal and they wheeled me into my room. My first thought was that, "boy..I can sure use a pepsi" My mouth was so dry and I was thirsty. They gave me a mouth swab and said I couldn't drink anything until the next day. I was up and walking around the room a few hours later. I waited around to see if I was going to get that bad gas and bloatiness that everyone spoke of. It never came and I was in 7th heaven. Except for the drain and staples on the small incisions. I got to take a shower the next day and finally drink water and eat jello and popsicles. Cool! Everyone and their mama came out to visit me. My room stayed full. Probably because my mother got on her phone and told everybody about my surgery. Can't get mad at her because I went back to her house to recuperate. On my first week visit on December 5, I had lost 7.5 lbs. Not that bad. About a pound a day. I did weigh in at 229 on the day of surgery so I had gained a pound. I did exerperince my first dumping yesterday. I was cleared to eat scrambled eggs, but my dumb self ate 2 and drank a little bit of body for life protein drinks and I was sick and threw up twice. I finally started feeling better about 6 hours later. I am mourning food though. I'm not hungry but I'm recuperating at home and watching tv. Those popeye and KFC commercials are killing me, not to mention Pizza Hut, Applebee's, etc...It's all in my mind, because I am not hungry. I'll just drink a bit of water and I'm full. I got the drain and staples removed on Dec 5 and that night I had a scab on it. The scar is going away pretty fast. Cocoa Butter to the rescue. All in all...I can't wait til a few months pass by and I can see a real difference. I'm going to have to be patient. I'm going to start working out in January. I'll keep everyone posted and thanks for all your support.
Andrea

My Story Hello Everyone. My name is Andrea and I just turned 40 on Sept 6, 2007. I am currently weighing in at around 228 lbs and I am a little over 5'2". I wasn't always overweight. As a teenager, I weighed 113-117 lbs. I exercised constantly and was very active. At my lowest, I wore a size 3. Mostly I was wearing between a 6 - 8. I was always out-going and you couldn't tell me I was going to be fat. I have always been interested in acting and performing but was a little to scared to fully pursue this. I even lived in West Hollywood, CA where my sister was attending UCLA and the other one was going to Cal State-Long Beach.
I had many actor friends but I never pursued it even though I was often prompted. I was attending Woodbury University in Burbank and studying Fashion Marketing. Family issues made me abruptly stop going to school and I returned back to St. Louis. One decision can literally ruin your whole life. My father and sisters kept telling me to return back to California but I was stubborn. Well..back in St. Louis, I became depressed and lethargic and started gaining weight. I mean I gained 30 lbs in 4 months and it continued to go up. I hated my job and my life. I started school again but it was on and off. I was really depressed. After years of being depressed and gaining weight I bottomed out at 228 lbs. (I use to swear that I'd never be over 125 lbs and now I was 103 lbs heavier)- I didn't have a decent relationship and was often alone. Now..don't get me wronge. I was depressed and alone but not lonely. I was comfortable being by myself but I did miss a real relationship.
I often blamed my weight as a reminder of my failure. I first became interested in bariatric surgery around 4 years ago. At that time I was doing LA Weightloss and had just lost 14 lbs in my first month when one of my good friends convinced me to go to the seminar. The commercials were all over the airways and I was interested. I was doing well on LA Weightloss and wasn't quite sure if I wanted to discontinue my progress. Needless to say, my doctor felt as though I could benefit from the surgery but when I first weighed in, I was around 208 lbs and wasn't quite heavy enough. Needless to say, I stopped doing LA Weightloss and stopped walking to try to maintain this weight.
I was first going through St. Alexius Hospital here in St. Louis. The hospital literally sucked. I did everything myself. I would fax in the info to my insurance providers because they would misplace my paperwork. I was constantly calling and was highly frustrated. My insurance carrier was and still is Cigna. After months of going back and forth and me calling the deciding nurse at Cigna, they finally sent me a denial letter because it wasn't a medical necessity. I was devastated. My friend who encouraged me to get the surgery didn't follow through and I did. I was mad for many reasons. Mad because I stopped my own program to pursue this and mad because of the denial. I thought, if I would have stuck with LA Weightloss, I would be around 40 lbs lighter by now. Cignal said I could appeal the decision but they had worn me and my spirit out.
Last year in Feb 2006, l joined Lipo Dissolve and went on the Medifast program. I lost 20 lbs my first month and my doctor was really happy and surprised. When she came back in the room the first thing she said was, "Wow, you lost 20 lbs this month, have you thought about pursuing the bariatric surgery again?' I was like, "Donna..I just lost 20 lbs!" She say, "it won't stay off and we have many patients having the surgery and you would be a great candidate" I reminded her of the devastation I suffered a few years earlier and couldn't take it again. She then tells me to go through with it again because the head doctor will call the insurance company directly to make sure you get the surgery if you get denied.
Well...I still sat on this for over a year because I was honestly not wanting to do this again. Around March of this year, my co-worker says she's getting the Lap Band in Mexico for $10,000 and this prompted me to start moving. She was about the same size as myself and I really thought about moving forward. To make a long story short, my doctor encouraged me to move forward. I almost forgot, one of my former co-workers called me around November 2006 and said she had the laparoscopic Roux-en Y gastric bypass surgery in August and had already lost around 80 lbs and suggested that I go through DePaul Hospital instead of St. Alexius because she had the same experience and she felt great now. Well...I took my doctor's and coworkers advice and called and made an appointment with DePaul Hospital and that's when I first met Dr. Roger de la Torre. He really impressed me at the seminar and I decided to move forward. I went through their weight loss program and their psychiatrist for the evaluation.
I passed everything with flying colors. My doctor had to still write me a letter of necessity and after several drafts, he told me to write it and he'll look over it and sign it. Great!! I found a letter that was on the internet that someone had provided and was approved the first time. I used this letter as a template and added in all my information. I had two knee surgeries since then because of a torn cartilage and needless to say after 2 months of callling Cigna for an update I was approved the first time!!! I was ecstatic. That was last month in August.
People were really surprised that I was approved because I'm not diabetic or have high blood pressure. My family does have history of strokes and diabetes so I could have ended up with the same health conditions. I really think that some people really weren't happy for me and wanted to speak negative to me and I wasn't going to have that again!! This surgery is extremely popular now so I will be scheduled for my surgery at the end of October for my Laparoscopic Roux-enY gastric bypass.
I have a Pre Op on September 26th and I'm so excited. Since my approval, many of my overweight friends have now jumped on the bandwagon and want all the information. Pray that everything goes well. I'm really looking forward to changing my life around and go after the things I wanted 20 years ago. Good News...I did complete my BA last year (finally--so it's never to late) and after tonight's class, I will officially have my Masters!!! This journey has taught me to not ever give up on what you believe in or want. If you want to go back to school, make it happen..you're going to get older year after year so why not do something that will benefit you in the long run.
People can take many things from you but they can't take away your education!!! I have lost friends because I went back to school. I had a friend tell me just 13 weeks before I graduated with my BA that I shouldn't do it because I'm doing it to please my family. How stupid!!! As long as I can remember, one of my main goals was to graduate from college. I will encourage any and everyone to do the same if that's what they want. Don't listen to people who say you are too old or it's too expensive or there are people out there who have a degree and still don't make money...Who cares...they still have options!!! We have a lot of living to do so we might as well be HAPPY doing it!!!! I've been miserable for too many years...watch out world, here comes the new and improved Andrea aka DIVA DOLL!!!

This is virtual Andrea before my WLS journey.
