Surgeon Testimonial

Hans Schmidt, M.D.
Dr. Hans Schmidt had done my Sleeve Surgery on July 12th. I am the type of patient that is unlike any other patient. I explained that my stomach gets very upset before surgery from nerves and the anxiety plus the anesthesia and when I wake up I am very sick to my stomach. Dr. Schmidt had the anesthesiologist put a patch behind my ear (like the ones you wear for sea sickness) before surgery and then show me in the operation room that he had 2 meds feeding thru my IV for it as well and will continue in my IV until I was discharged. You see I am an Acid Reflux /IBS patient so upset stomachs is an everyday occurance and worse during surgery. Thanks to Dr. Schmidt and his team at Hackensack I only woke up feeling a little upset in the stomach and have been fine ever since. Thanks for listening to me and taking my word. Kudos to you all.

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I had Stage III Lymes Disease before my surgery. I have always been heavy and had some medical issues but it got worse after that naughty tick bit me back in 2007. It was a hard battle to function every day and taking up to 13 medications a day was getting to be nuts. I was sad, tired, depressed and just sick and tired of being sick an tired.

Well its now February 16 and I had my surgery on July 12th.  I have seen quite a few changes but I am not really happy.  I should be below the 200lb marker but I am not.  I am at 210lns.  Think I was 255lbs or 260lbs when I had the surgery.  My issues is I can still eat.  Most of it is mental but I can still eat and eat everythihg.  Chips, candy, soda, you name it, I can eat it.  Just the other day I ate a Wendys single cheese burger with some fries and a diet coke.  Didn't finish the fries and it took me hours to finish the soda but I did finish the burger, bread and all in one sitting.  This has got to stop.  I have not been sleeping, totally stressed out about EVERYTHING which is causing my blood pressure to be high that my cardiologist now has me on blood pressure meds and beta blockers so I don't stroke out.  What the hell is going on with me?  I feel just as crappy now as I did before the surgery.  If I knew I was going to feel like this now, I would of skipped the surgery, still felt like crap but enjoyed eating....UUGH!
The good thing I guess is I went from sizes 18-20 (sometimes 22-24) depending on what country made the clothes, down to a 14-16.  I went from 13 medications before the surgery down to now 2 plus vitamins (if I remember to take the vitamins).
I guess I expected more.  More loss, more energy, more joy.  But don't feel it.  Maybe it will come.  I hope so.

Phase 1...
on July 20, 2011 7:50 pm

On July 12th I had done the Vertical Sleeve surgery.  I was very excited because I knew it was the day my life was going to change for the better.  I got to Hackensack Hospital by 11:30 and was prepped for surgery.  When the surgery was over, I was told that I had a hiatel hernia and that they repaired it before they did the surgery.  I wasn't in recovery long and when I got into my room I had the pleasure of sharing it with an older woman who loved to moan and scream for no apparent reason.  Then when she was sleeping (knew because she was a loud snorer) she would talk in her sleep and have a full length conversation.  UUGH!

Wednesday the 13th arrived and I had to go for this test to make sure I wasn't leaking inside.  I had to drink the most horrible stuff you could ever imagine.  OH MY GOSH...it took every ounce of my being not to throw up.  But I passed and was told they were going to discharge me early in the evening.

Evening came and the nurse handed me this pain pill to see if I could tolerate it.  About a half hour after taking it my body became clampy and shakey.  The pain near my incisions were hurting very bad.  I was shaking and rocking back and forth.  The nurse came in and pumped through my IV the pain killer that I had been on already and thank God, it evened my out.  But by that time I was extemely night so I stayed another night.

Thursday the 14 I came home.  They then tried to send me home with Percocet but I said NO WAY!!  They give me the same "bad trip" feeling the ones you gave me yesterday and it kicks up my Acid Reflux.  So my nurse ripped up the prescription and threw it away.  By afternoon I was home..WOOHOO!

From the 14th to the 19th I was home recovering and trying to get used to Phase 1 of this diet...Nothing but clear liquids for 2 whole weeks....UUGH!!!!

On the 19th I had my first follow up visit with the doc and after they weighed me I was told I went in at 255lbs the day of surgery and now I am down to 236lbs...thats 19lbs!!!!!!!!!

So now I am in the gym 3 days a week and walking at our local county park which is really huge.   Still a little sore.  I have to deal with this liquid diet until Tuesday the 26th and to mushy foods I go.

God Bless

My Story

I was skinny as a little girl.  Up until I got into the 3rd grade is when I started gaining weight.  By the time I graduated High School in 1987 I was in a size 16.  Then I entered the world of college, college cafeterias, hanging out with friends and doing 2 of our favorite things:  rocking to heavy metal and eating.  Come on, everyone knows that after a concert or seeing bands play at a club you then hit the diners for cheese fries with gravy and a cheeseburger.  So by 1989 I was 250lbs but not for long.

I decided then in 1989 to go see a nutritionist who put me on a cookie diet, yes..I said a cookie diet.  With a water retention pill and a diet suppressent, these cookies were to make you full after you eat them.  I was on this diet all the way into the summer of 1990 where I lost 100lbs.  I looked good.  I looked like a female rocker.  Long red hair, jade green eyes (contacts), and I was a size 11-12 but not for long.

In November of 1990 my brother Kevin was diagnosed with Cardiomyapthy, a virus to the heart.  He needed a heart transplant to live.  So my nerves kicked in and out the window went the cookie diet and back in the mouth was food..lots of it.  Not to leave you hanging about my brother, he got the heart in May of 1991 and in April of 2001 he was diagnosed with Cancer which was caused by the 2 anti-rejections meds and died at 28.

I have had some medical issues like IBS and Acid Reflux but in the summer of 2007 I was bit by a deer Tic and had Stage III Lymes Disease.  This caused major problems:  High Blood Pressure, Sleep Apnea, Low Immune, Aches and Pains and massive swollen ankles and feet.  It came to the point that I was taking up to 13 medications just to function for a day.

Finally in 2009 I decided to do the surgery but back then Insurance Companies made you jump through hoops to get approved and just when I thought I was, the Insurance Company denied me saying I didn't do what was required right.  So I got frustrated and said "forget it, I will just be fat forever"

Now in 2011 my Insurance Company decided to change their requirements for the surgery and a new surgery was introduced (vertical sleeve) so thanks to my husband who convinced me to have the surgery with him, I did on July 12th (hubby had his on June 28th).

I am so glad I did this.  I weighed in the day of surgery at 255lbs and on July 19th at my follow up visit I weighed in at 236lbs..19lbs LOST!!  I haven't seen the 230's in ages.  Thanks to this surgery, most of my medical conditions are GONE...yes I said GONE!!!

Now it's just waiting and watching the pounds drop off so I can be healthier and skinnier and have more energy for when we suprise my kids with a trip to Disney World in September and the rest of my life.

God Bless
