Dr. Ungson is an amazing surgeon with a phenomenal record. He has done some very difficult revision cases and really does a nice DS procedure. The care I received at CIMA hospital in Mexico was outstanding--better care than I would've received in the states. Dr. Ungson is a brilliant and world-class DS surgeon. Visit the profiles above where you can read more coments touting the stellar care and treatment received in Hermosillo, MX. My mother, an RN of 40 years, went with me when I had my surgery in Mexico and was just BLOWN AWAY by how first-class my care was. CIMA hospital is an American-owned, swanky resort-type place for cash-paying Americanos and upper-class Mexicans. The patients there are treated like royalty.

An English to Spanish phrase translator pamphlet may be of help in communicating with the nurses, but it was really not a huge problem. Dr. Ungson's nurses and staff were attentive, professional and incredibly competent. I would never hesitate to refer anyone for surgery with Dr. Ungson and his team at CIMA Hospital in Hermosillo, Mexico.

You'll need $11K for the surgery (more for revision), around $200 for post op meds, and around $75/day for a regular room at the Hotel Colonial (for about 4-5 days). Take a cashier's check made out to "Gilberto Ungson" for the surgery. I had my labwork done here about a month pre-op and took the results with me. A list of the labs he wants can be found on his website. Only test I had in Mexico was a lung xray. This was included in the overall price. Pain was controlled at the hospital by some pretty heavy analgesic drugs, I dunno what, and you can always ask for more if they aren't giving you enough, and they will. I'm allergic to morphine, so they had to find different things to use for me, and some of it gave me bad nightmares, which is common for narcotics. You'll have a recliner to sleep in at the hospital, so that helps. He gives a mild painkiller once you leave the hospital, and I knew this beforehand, so I brought some stronger stuff with me from home (lortab) which I got from my PCP. Dr. Ungson will prescribe something stronger, but you have to beg a bit. All my tubes had been removed by the time I left the hospital. You'll have two drain tubes and the iv to deal with in the hospital. I would be sure to get the recliner in your room. The recliner is an extra $18/day. The first night we were there, and there was no recliner reserved for my room, we went out and "borrowed" one of the mattresses off one of the pool lounge chairs. We took it back to the room and put it on the bed between the mattress and the sheets. It's just very difficult to sleep lying down soon postop. There is room service at the Colonial, so that helps. There is hot water in the Colonial lobby, so take boullion cubes, tea, decaf coffee, etc. whatever can be made up using hot water. Gatorade seems to be a favorite for post-op also. You can get it at the Wal-Mart which you can get to by Taxi, or just take some with you. There is plenty of nice ice in the ice machine at the Colonial. Dr. U can probably get you in within a month of you requesting a date. We drove across the border, and identification was all we needed (I think this may change in 2007 or 8, tho).
