My Mom's 1-Month Update!

Mar 21, 2007

Geeze, I almost missed it--I can't believe it's been a month already!  Anyhow, she's doing VERY well.  Lost 21 lbs. the first month.  Since her surgeon says she needs to lose just 70 lbs., I guess that's like, what, 35% of her EWL already!  She's still struggling to get in any decent amount of real, solid food, but she's also trying to do too much, IMO.  She went with us to Mississippi -- didn't do any of the parade or anything -- I dropped her off at my Aunt's, while we went on to Jackson, where she could just loll about and rest, and relax.  But then the day we got back, she was OFF again with her travel group to Georgia, and she just called to say she's wading in the Atlantic Ocean off Hiltonhead island!  She said she's having trouble eating, and I told her her body's probably too tired!!  And she said she's going to do better with her water today, and maybe she's getting a bit dehydrated.

Anyhow, major surgery and being 68 haven't really slowed her down very much!  And she's 21 lbs. lighter to boot!  Things are looking good for My Mom/Mimi/Ruth!!!

St. Patrick's Parade/Sweet Potato Queens!

Mar 20, 2007

BabyCatcher Explains the Sweet Potato Queen Phenomenon: "Jill Conner Browner wrote books about the Sweet Potato Queens (SPQ) They are squirt milk outtta your nose funny!!!! And also full of woman wisdom. You just absolutely must, Must MUST read them! They are, in order: The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love God Save the Sweet Potato Queens The Sweet Potato Queens' Big Ass Cook Book and Financial Planner The Sweet Potato Queens' Field Guide to Men (Or every Man I Love Is Either Married, Gay or Dead) The Sweet Potato Queens' Wedding Planner/Divorce Guide She also just released a novel: The Sweet Potato Queens' Big Ass Novel There are also some CDs (like the Big Ass Box of Music) Kacey Jones sings all the SPQ songs, including the SPQ Anthem "Never Wear Panties to a Party!" 25 years ago, Jill's friend, Mal, (Who, along with Hal, owns a restuant/bar in Jackson, MS, called Hal and Mal's) in decided to sponsor a St. Paddy's Day Parade. So Jill, upon hearing this news decided that she wanted to be a queen riding on the back of a convertible wearing a tiara and gown and with big hair and wave at everyone along the parade route. Jill always wanted to get to do that, but was never the queen of anything... the queens were always 5'2", Blue eyed, big breasted girls with big red hair (Jill always only had about 4 hairs on her head and was 6'1" tall, and was not volumptuous) So Jill just upped and proclaimed herself to be a Queen and decided to claim the title "Sweet Potato Queen" Over the past 25 years, this has grown into a movement with chapters all over the entire world. The parade in Jackson MS is now the 3rd or 4th largest St. Paddy's Day Parade in the USA. Every year on the third weekend of March, Queens from everywhere go to Jackson to march in Mal's St. Paddy's Day Parade with the SPQs! A couple of months ago I posted that I was going this year and invited everyone else to come along too! My post above was about the great weekend we had! Ultimately, it is all about getting to do and have, NOW, what you couldn't or didn't do or have when you were a kid. For Jill Conner Browne this includes majorette boots, the big red hair, big tits, fancy gowns and glitter! For us DSers, as LeaAnn posted, it is a way to celebrate our metamorphosing bodies - it gives us an occasion to play dress up and be queenly, or become hussies or whatever it was that we want. Ya know, if there was something you didn't get as a girl, then that is sad... but now you're all growed up and all haired over... if yoy don't get it now - well, then it's your own damn fault! So, Bottom line: Read the Books! And mark off your calendar for the 3rd weekend of March next year. (And start going to Thrift stores and buying up all the sparky and sequined clothes you can find! You'll need the wardrobe for all the different functions!)"

Yawl, BabyCatcher's new nickname is BOOTS -- cuz look at those things she has on her feet!    Those things were the hit of the SPQ BALL, with my bejeweled chihuahua handbag a distant second!  And she only fell down once!  This SPQ thing was a WONDERFUL idea because otherwise, I would have NO occassion to get so hussified!  And with our changing body shapes and feeling more and more beautiful, there is NO better way to celebrate and bask in our beautiful-ness than to get all gussied up!

Thanks for the wonderful memories, BC and Christine!
