Surgeon Testimonial

Peter Frederick Crookes M.D., F.R.C.S., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Crookes is an amazing surgeon! Love the Irish accent! When I first met him, we spent a long time together going over each of the surgeries he does (he does them all) and he explained the pro's and con's of each. Every question I asked was answered honestly. The decision was mine as to which surgery I could live with for the rest of my life. I chose the duodenal switch and he agreed that it was a good choice for me. During my hospital stay he visited me every day and literally held my hand and made sure I was pain free and doing well. During follow-up visits, he still took the time to answer all my questions. I've never felt rushed when speaking to him. He is a wonderful man and an excellent surgeon. I would very highly recommend him!

First Infusion
on August 15, 2008 6:06 pm
Hi Guys!

Life has been keeping me very busy and I haven't been able to post much, but I wanted to give a quick update.

I saw the hematologist again today. I was also given my lab results from 2 weeks ago. I've been a very good girl and my numbers are already up! I removed my IUD (no more super heavy periods) and upped my iron supplements a lot. I've alwasy eaten a lot of iron rich foods, but I added chicken liver which, sorry to tell you, I actually love!!

Hemoglobin: 11.1   up from 9.3 in July (range is 11.7- 15.5)
Hematocrit: 32  up from 27.2 (35.0-45.0)
Red blood cell count: 3.71 up from 3.11 (3.80-5.10)
Ferritin was 17, I don't know what it was last time but the range is 12-150.

I grabbed a huge stack of magazines, but once they started me on the benedryl, I pretty much passed out and only skimmed through one of the magazines! Since this was just the first infusion, they did it extra slow. The whole process took 2 1/2 hours. Next time it will take an hour. I'll get the benedryl pre-treatment every time since apparently people have had an allergic reaction to the iron even after being fine for several treatments.

The doctor is giving me InFed (iron dextran) 200mg. He thinks having the iron infusions more than once a week is a waste of iron and that the body can only absorb so much at one time.

So that's it. He thinks I will have no problems and that my numbers should be good enough for surgery be the end! I still don't have a new surgery date yet but I should soon.

The SCADS folks had a great time last week at Zendejas Mexican Restaurat in San Dimas. My camera takes a decent pictures, but I got tired of waiting for Miss Lori and her personal photographer (her husband!) to post their always amazing pictures so I'll go ahead and post mine!! There were about 20 of us, including my 2 kids! Here we go!

Here we all are after lunch:

Saw The Hematologist
on August 1, 2008 1:33 pm
For those that don't know, my plastic surgery was canceled due to my anemia.  The best part of my appointment was that this doctor was very familiar with the DS and even studied under Dr. Crookes when he went to medical school at USC! He told me he loved Dr. Crookes!! (so do I!) He also knows my plastic surgeon so communication between everyone should be easy.

So, I had more blood taken and when those results come in, they'll put in for the authorization for the iron infusions. My next appointment is in 2 weeks! arg! Looks like I'll be getting the IV iron once a week for 8 weeks.  Oh, and I got a B-12 shot because I was pretty low.

He also told me to take ferrous sulfate, 325 mg, 1 pill 3x a day, as well as a stool softener called Senna, if I need it. I'm curious as to what Michelle (vitalady) thinks of that!!

I don't have a new plastic surgery date, but IF I need to wait until all the infusions are done, that would be sometime in mid-October.

Next time I see him I'm going to ask him why the once a week treatments as opposed to the daily treatments.
