Surgeon Testimonial

Dennis C. Smith, Jr., MD, FACS
I had a BPD/DS with Dr. Smith on 3/9/04. I can not say enough nice things about my surgeon! He is very focused and knowledgeable. He has a quiet, but authoritive and compassionate bedside manner. I was on his waiting list for 11 months to the day, and I am so happy I waited! He did insist that I lose 36 lbs before surgery (I had a BMI of 72 when I started this journey, but was able to reduce it to 65.2 by the day of surgery), and that I have a vena cava filter inserted due to previous episodes of pulmonary emboli. His office set up all the appointments and details for the insertion of the vena cava filter which was done by another surgeon just minutes before Dr. Smith's part of the surgery began. His reputation is sterling and he is very upfront about his statistics. His office staff has been frustrating at times to deal with during the long waiting period, but they do truly mean well. Since the surgery, they have been nothing short of wonderful. I think they just get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of people wanting to schedule surgery with this talented surgeon! I would recommend Dr. Smith highly. Don't be scared off by the waiting list...he's worth it! The best is always worth waiting for. I must add his local support group is second to none. I came in to Atlanta for surgery and not one, but THREE of his patients visited me in the hospital! I could have had another surgeon and had my surgery a lot sooner, but Dr. Smith was the only one I truly felt at peace about when considering surgeons.

Well, it’s official! You’re on the losing side. The trumpets are blaring, the cymbals are crashing and the drums are drumming – all for YOU! I hope that all went well for you! You’ve been out of surgery now for a little over a month – YIPPIE!!! Your journey will have moments to “pause” – I’d like to impart some words of wisdom for when it does occur - remember these wise words whispered by Confucius – “It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.” Be patient. You didn’t put it on over night, it won’t come off over night (DARN IT!)…Don’t forget to update your profile at least monthly and take lots of pictures…the transformations will make your jaw drop!!! RNY 10/31/03 – down 89 pounds!!! Good luck!

3 Yar Post-Op Appointment
posted on 3/19/07 9:02 pm
I went to Atlanta for my 3 year post-op yesterday. I had a great trip, so much shorter now that I live just a little over an hour away! It was great to see the office staff. They always treat me like I'm an old friend!

Sadly, Eric is no longer with Dr. Smith's office. He's taken a job that works better for his personal life. I'm glad he found something that works, but he is definitely going to be missed!

I've gained 10 lbs since my last visit a year ago. Not unusual and Dr. Smith wasn't concerned. He did want me to be on an exercise program, which I'm going to try to get into my daily schedule. I have a free gym at work for goodness sakes!  It's just that I'm so exhausted by the time I actually get off work!  He also REALLY listened to my complaints about the recurring, unwavering gas, and finally agreed to a maintenance prescription of Flagyl! I felt like the world had been lifted off my shoulder. It actually allow me to have a NORMAL work and social life. Hallelujah!
He had me watch a little video about maintaining weight loss long term. In the video, it said that if your doctor puts you on steroids for any reason, to let Dr. Smith know so that he can prescribe medication to counteract the acid in them. SO, since I've been on steroids THREE times since I moved here for sinus problems, I walked out with a prescription for Nexium too. Then he sent me to the lab to have my 15 vials of blood drawn for the 18 tests he ordered. I do like how thorough he is! I'm looking foward to getting the results to see what I need to tweak in my supplements!
I've added a couple of pictures to document this anniversary!
