Surgeon Testimonial

James D. Atkinson
I can not tell you much about Dr Atkinson. Through the seminars and the follow up it was Dr. Soong that I spoke with. Dr. Soong is the lapband side and Dr. Atkinson is the RNY. Dr. Soong was great though. He is always friendly, has a smile on his face and takes the time to answer anything you want to know. The first time I met Dr. Atkinson was 15 minutes before surgery and that was it. He does great work though and very competent(this from other patients).

TWO WEEK POST OP......
on July 1, 2008 5:47 pm
Well today is my two week post op and I have lost 20 pounds!  I never thought it would be this awesome feeling even when I am still sore.  Sadly I just started to walk about three days ago and I know that was really bad of me.  I walked so much in the hospital and then when I got home NOTHING.  So I am starting to walk and trying not to think about the scale I have and jumping on the thing every 20 minutes.

I am "mentally" hungry all the time.  I am on the liquid(anything that can be sucked through a straw) stage for 3 weeks.  I don't like it at all.  I am one of the pickiest eaters I know so this is not easy.  I have tried to eat deli meat and I felt like my chest was going to explode it hurt even though I chewed and chewed and chewed.  Back to the straw for me.  One more week....

My Story

I have been overweight for most my life the only time I had ever been "skinny" was with this one drug called fen-phen.  We all know how deadly that was.  After my kids were born I pretty much kept going up and up. Well after my last child was born in 2004 I had a love/hate relationship with this other drug called phentermine.  I was off and on it for about three years and this is a drug that you are only supposed to take for 90 days.  Well at the end of 2007 I decided enough was enough and started looking into WLS.

I choose the RNY after much research.  I wanted it because I wanted the restriction of foods.  I don't care for needles and to have to go often for fills was not for me.  In fact when I was in the seminar, Dr Soong told us that they do what they call the "cruise" fill and what they do is when people are about to go on a cruise or vacation they open the band completely so you eat what you want.  He said that they don't really like to do that but people ask for it all the time.  So I thought that I don't want the opportunity to stray at all ever.

When I started the process I was 230lbs and BMI 40.7 and the day I had surgery I was 221lbs and BMI 39.1. I'm 5'3. I had my surgery on the 17th of June and for me it didn't come fast enough.  My insurance was great we were missing one thing that they required(five years past charts) and the day the Dr. office submitted it, it was approved.  I was lucky in that I didn't have to do the diet.  I just needed to be morbidly obese and morbidly obese for the 4 of 5 years and we were done.  Dr. Atkinson's staff was so great and they are upbeat and entertaining.

And so the journey begins............
