Surgeon TestimonialLaurence K. Tanaka M.D.Dr. tanaka was very quiet and serious when i met him at my pre op consult. as we talked he loosened up, and by the end of my appointment he was smiling and joking around. he comes off very tough, but is a very caring doctor and likes to joke around. he was great in the hospital and has made it clear that no matter what, if i have a ny question or concern, to call him. the staff at pac bar is very friendly, although i had to stay on their tail throughout the pre op process because they would forget things, and they did not even send my pre op packet. i had to have it faxed to me because they sent it to the wrong address. dr. tanaka was very straight-forward with the risks of surgery. he is pretty strict on the post op diet. i would recommend him to anyone and feel that if i had to rate him on a scale of 1-10 on competence, a 10, on bedside manner, an 8.

6 month surgiversary! on January 24, 2008 3:32 pm
well today is exactly 6 months from the day i had rny surgery. the day of surgery i weighed 240 and was wearing a size 18. today i weigh 154 and wear a size 4 and small shirts. i can't believe how far i come. i definately have slowed down in weight loss, but that is ok because i know i am nearing the last few pounds and it gets harder and harder the less you need to lose. i still would like to get down to at least 130. i am a little scared just hearing about how many people regain weight. but, i feel i have made changes that are life long. i still haven't had any refined carbs. i have not tasted bread, cake, cookies, pasta, etc.... the only carbs i eat on occasion are potatoes and veggies. i think once i hit my goal i might introduce low carb tortillas and things like that, but for now i just want to get to my goal as quickly as possible. i want to take advantage of this rapid weight loss time.

i'm home! on August 2, 2007 11:10 am
i made it home on friday july 27th, and was feeling good except for occasional dizziness. i have been able to get down crystal light, sf popsicles, and my protein drink. i mix my 2 scoops of chocolate pro complex with 8 ounces of water and a drop of peppermint extract. i am now able to get that down throughout the morning, and be done by the time i put my kids (and myself!) down for a nap. i had my post op yesterday and everything looks good. dr. tanaka said that i could start soft foods next week. i am looking forward to some new flavor, but i am nervous to have anything beyond liquids. my energy level is actually higher than it was pre op. i have more motivation to clean and play with my kids. i am even cooking dinner for the family. even though i can't eat i have made them dinner since we got home. i am so glad i did this for myself and i can't wait to get to goal! i do have to say that the one thing besides nausea that has been bothering me is the fact that i don't feel like i really have a pouch. i can tell i can't drink a ton of liquid, and i burp a lot. but, i have not gotten a sensation in my pouch of fullness. i hope that changes once i start eating solids!

My Story My struggle with weight began when I was in elementary school, and plagued me all through high school. My sophomore year was the first time I went on a serious diet when I was put on Phen-Fen. I lost quite a bit of weight and probably went from close to 200 pounds to about 155 pounds. Of course the weight slowly krept back on. And even though I was a cheerleader and was quite active, I had poor eating habits and reached an all time high at that point of 222 my senior year. I was miserable and suffered from anxiety and depression and had to be treated with antidepressants and therapy. By the time I graduated, I was ready for a change, and I started going to a medical weightloss center. I was put on several different diets and drugs including Meridia and Phenetermine. I ultimately stuck with the Phentermine in combination with Paxil, and I got down to around 168. From this point on, for the next 4 years my weight went from a high of 215 to 165, going back and forth from atkins to Phentermine, etc... During this time I met my wonderful husband, who supported me throughout all of my ups and downs. By 2004 my weight was creeping back up, and I found out that I was pregnant. After starving myself and being on very low carb, high protein diets, the fact that I had to eat normal did a number on my weight. By the end of my pregnancy I had shot up to 265, my highest at this point. During breastfeeding I was able to shed 20 pounds quite easily, but by October of 2005 my weight krept back up to 265, and I was pregnant again. With my second pregnancy, I initially lost 5 pounds, then ultimately gained 12 and topped out at 277. Yikes!!! My second child was born early and breastfeeding did not seem to help with the weightloss. One afternoon I was watching Oprah and I saw a story about a young woman who had struggled with her weight and did not feel accepted by her family. This show was an update on her, after she had WLS, and she looked amazing. This is what inspired me to get info. about gastric bypass.
