My Story

Vanity,.................... has got be my favorite sin.

I took an antidepressant, which resulted in my body succumbing to diabetes.

Being thin was an obsession  since as far back as I can remember. In 1978, my doctor prescribed me the diet drug cocktail "Phen-Fen". It wasnt that I needed it, as I wasnt over weight; I wanted it to ensure I wouldnt gain weight. In 1978 I was 14. Laxitives were added to the regimen in high school.

Back in those days, living on Long Island - were the Jordache, Sassoon, Sergio Valenti, Gitano and Gloria Vanderbilt fashion eras. Those designer cloths were in essence not fitting to those over a size 11.

I took Phen-fen until 1995. In 1996 I was diagnosed with the mitral valve abnormality as a result of the cocktail. They took Fenfluramine/Pondomin off thr market. They claimed Fastin/Phentermine was still safe to take. In all honesty, it wasnt as effective.

Come 2000, my marriage was in trouble. My PCP prescribed an antidepressent for me in 2001. I didnt like any of what he prescribed b/c it subdued me - after all, the years of taking 'speed' and feeling 'up' trumped the feeling 'down' that these Rx's prevailed. The short time I was on the antidepressents I blew up like a balloon. I began to have pains I never thought possible. Pancreatitis, kidney issues - then, I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. No pills would help. Needles werent an option.

In 2003 I checked into the gastric bypass, inasmuch attending a seminar at Hershey Med. When I heard the host physicians saying that death was a common side effect - I ran out of there.

I decided to stop eating and dropped my weight to 170. I maintained this weight from drinking coffee and eating applesauce once a day until 2006. I dont know what happened - but my body just said "enough".

My sugar got out of control - more ailments commenced. I decided in 2007 to look into the lapband procedure and was initially going to go for it, until I found out that needles were necessary to maintain the band. The bariatric physicians had informed me that the gastric bypass is now larascopic, less invasive and would be more suitable for me.

My insurance put me on a waiting period - for which I had completed that in November 07. Here I am, now scheduled for the GP March 28, 2008.

Wish me luck, as this surgery is expected to reverse my type 2 diabetes - which is my main reason for doing this. Im tired of being sick.

Dr DiMarcos practice is performing my surgery. I canr remember the actual surgeons name who is doing it - I just refer to him as "Dr Mc Cutie".
