Surgeon Testimonial

Ariel Ortiz Lagardere, MD FACS
DR. Ortiz and his entire staff was very energetic and positive. Dr. Ortiz made me feel very comfortable when I met him and I just felt wonderful vibes. His staff was outstanding. I love the entire staff and their isn't anything bad that I have to say. Overall I would rate him a billion. Bedside manner, surgical competence and the whole nine yards was great. You don't have to believe a word that I say, and no I don't work for him. I am a real person and I am giving you my opinion.

Happy bandiverary to me.
on February 28, 2008 6:31 pm
I am late posting but i have been too busy lately, especially today. I just got an award at my old college and had to except it. I am near goal and today I fit into a size 12 and couldnt last week or the month before because I need to work out. I am down to 204 but started at 307 everyone, size 24, just down and depressed.

Things that happened in one year, Divorced in one week, definately didnt know that was coming, Happier than Ive been in 5 or 6 years.  I have nothing more to add except that the band works, read my blog and I never thought that id be here, EVER. God is Great, All the Time. I also have met this very sweet man, such a gentleman, but its too soon to tell you all about him. Look out, maybe some funny news by the end of this month.

Without you all, and of course God, where would I be?----Bandless. I am still around you all, just a bit grown up and on the go now! I will be at goal by April, EXERCISE does work. Someones going to as how did i do it, one day at a time exercise a few days out of the month, but definately the first 6 months of being banded 5 to 6 days a week, some days I'd quit for 3 or 4 days but would eventually get my lazy but back, just like now. I could not get out that 14 until now, i did 2 weeks at the gym. Good luck.

I am still hanging in there. I recently got a new fill back after being unfilled Earlier Sept. I ended up getting 2.74 cc but had to go back to the doctor 2 days later after noticing that my band was a bit tight. My throat was hurting and this is the same thing that had happened the first time. I was very aware of what was going to happen or what was going to go on since I was once overfilled. After immediatly noticing the symptoms I called my doctor and he told me to get an unfill. At an overfill I get a pain in the throat, severe throat pain just like strept, and also my stomach hurts each time that I'd drink water. I told my doctor this time and added a bit more such as feeling my water coming back up during my sleep. My regular doctor couldnt unfill me because he was leaving town but he called the doctor that was in the office, Galvani (I love him too) and he unfilled me. He did look on the Fluro machine and told me that he didnt think that I was unfilled and really thought that I should keep it there but I insisted that he removed some. He remove 0.4 and it mad a wonderful difference. I think I have a total of 2.3 or so. I have been doing very well and have since lost more pounds without any problems. Still loving my band. I was up to 239 after unfill. I am now back down to 230.

If you think you are overfilled, go get it out. Dont let the doctor tell you not to remove any.

September 09, 2007 Down to 233 as of this morning. Loving it!

Well I got a new job at a new school and everything at this school is much better. It has been keeping me busy along with me social life.

My last fill was in May and since then it went from about 258 to now 235 but a total weightloss for the last 6 months was about 70 pounds.

Problem: My band suddenly tightened up and would not let up. I thought my life was over! I was prepared to lose my band! I called my doctors office for an unfill even before it got so sever that I could even swallow my own spit. The receptionist told me on Tuesday, when I had noticed it, that she could not get me in the office, they had too many patients  She wanted me to come in next week, Sept. 13. I told her there was no way that was gonna happen and that I would not even get off the phone if she keeps talking that $hit. She finally gave in and said that I could come in the next day which was going to be Wednesday. I thought ok that's better and I should be able to do it. Well by 8:00 pm I was unable to swallow my spit! I could not swallow nor water. I called the ER at the hospital and asked if they had a doctor for an adjustment. Well a UIC nurse refused to let me talk to a doctor and she also said that they know nothing about a lapband or any other type of band. What the hell is a band? I was ready to kill the woman by then, since she says I won't let you speak to a doctor because they do know either.

I called my doctors office knowing that it was closed way before 8:00 pm. I was just hopeing that I could hear anything like an emergency number on the machine. It was. I paged Dr. Shiyani at Day One Health, which is my follow up doctor who took me on as a patient after returning from MX. I love him! He was sooooooo soooooooo sorry and the empathy that he had for my pain, damn I feel really special. He told me that UIC's interns and doctors were trained and that I could go there. The nurse didn't know what she was talking about. He also told me that I could go to Loyola. He then got extreamly angry about the receptionist for not allowing me to come in the office. He says that is not our policy and any emergency to immediately to to Dayone office and that I would have been serviced. I am sooooo glad she is fired now. My doctor asked if I could make it to his office by 9:00pm. He said that he felt so bad that he would open up his office to unfill me. Lord how I wanted to kiss him when I saw him. My DH was with me and didn't know if I was to live or die when he say the adjustment needle. I love Dr. Shiyani. He is the best. This man really listens to his patients and if you get into a problem, he will help you and feel your pain. I had my first pb which was due to swallowing my spit that day. I had instant relief and just a little chest pain which stayed for about 24 hours. I thought the pain meant that I am losing my band but it went away. I only have about 1cc in my band now. I am just happy to be alive. LOL I don't care about gainnig right now. Well I'm not really eating a lot. I don't want a fill for a while.

My Story

I am a 29 year old female, married, no children.I am currently 301 pounds with hopes of becoming  under 200 pounds which I have never seen since maybe grammer school.  I have asthma really bad and my knees are killing me. I recently decided to get the lapband and originally was going to go to UIC Medical Center, but after calling my Blue Shield PPo provider, I found that they will not cover bariatric surgery. It has something to do with it being excluded in the policy--they said that I could still try. I decided not to wait for them and I did my research and will be traveling to Mexico to see Dr. Ortiz..  February 28, 2007 is my lucky day.
