Surgeon Testimonial

Nam Hoang Nguyen
Dr. Nguyen and his team performed my vertical gastrectomy (as well as gallbladder removal and repair of major umbilical hernia) in Richmond General Hospital on July 28, 2011. Leading up to the surgery I found Dr. Nguyen to be helpful, knowledgeable, very willing to answer questions. The people he works with, including internist Ali Zentner and the nutritionists at Garrett Wellness Centre also impressed me greatly with their friendly, helpful manner as well as their experience.
And his office staff did their best to help me with appointment times that fit my schedule coming from out of town and having to deal with ferries, etc.
All told a very positive experience so far.

Finally sleeved home and happy about it
on August 2, 2011 2:03 pm
I finally had my sleeve done in Richmond General by Dr. N. Nguyen (who also removed a bad gall bladder and repaired an umbilical hernia while I was under...um, I should clarify and say I knew he was going to do those things) on July 28.
After only one day, the pain of all three surgeries was really manageable with just Tylenol 3 (much better than I expected) and the following day I was off those too as the pain was no more than period cramps ... and not the worst of those by ANY stretch.
Friends brought me home to the Island on the 31 and now I'm learning all about living with my new tiny tummy (well, the internal one is tiny, the external one still has quite a way to go to be tiny!) It's all so new and amazing to me. The fact that I'm really not hungry but I do eat when I know I should... the fact that after a very few spoonfuls of creamy soup or 1/4 cup of protein drink or yogurt and I'm full... I mean I'll start to burp if I take another mouthful as I found out a couple of time... it's weird. I can see why people need to take a couple of weeks off work because just learning all this stuff is a big deal all day long.
The hard part for me is getting enough water. I'm struggling with that because I've always been a chugger not a sipper. I think if I could just rig up one of those hamster drinking bottles to my head I might just manage it. But short of such odd head gear I just have to keep my water bottle near and my elbow bending.

Just over two weeks to go
on July 11, 2011 6:50 am
My surgery is scheduled for July 28 at Richmond Hospital and I admit the nerves are starting to happen. I've been waiting for this for nearly three years now, so the fact it's just around the corner is both exciting and scary. I know that six weeks from now, when all the pain is gone and I'm seeing pounds fall away, I will be nothing but happy.
Of course I know it might be rocky at times, having been working on the emotional/psychological eating part of things and I'm sure there will be days when I'll see an endless all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet and want to cry because all I can manage will be a cup of hot and sour soup... but I also know my health has been suffering and if I want to live to see retirement and enjoy it, I damn well need these changes.
So, in a couple of more days I start my liquid pre-surgery diet and then it's off to hospital and some great new beginnings.

My Story

I've been chubby and more all my life but when I hit puberty, well that's when all hell broke loose. My family had moved and I, shy and not someone to make friends easily, was daunted by a new school in a town where everyone had been together in class since kindergarten.
I would rush hope and read (always a favourite form of escape) and stuff myself with sandwiches or whatever I could find (my two favourite choices were PB&J or hotdogs ... still two big trigger foods for me).
I graduated at 200 lbs. in a homemade prom dress because the local store (... yes, that's singular) didn't sell much in my size and went on over the years to turn to food every time I was sad, lonely, bored, celebrating, pretty much anything. At my highest I weighed 360. For the past 20 years it's been running up and down the scale with 290 as my low point and generally 350 as a high point.
Three years ago (at 54) I went to my doctor and asked for a referral for bariatric surgery. It's been a trial and I wound up switching surgeons as the original one just kept adding to his waiting times and then basically forgetting about me. I first saw Dr. Nguyen in Dec. 2010 and, since I'd done a lot of the pre-testing stuff (it ain't easy getting this done up here in Canada) after a few more tests he gave the go-ahead for surgery on July 28. In a couple more days I start my pre-surgery full-liquid diet and then it's off to the OR.
Dr. Nguyen and and his team (Dr. Ali Zentner and the nutrition people at Garrett Wellness Centre) have been amazing, supportive, communicative and I'm feeling nervous but very excited to be where I am today.
