I'm a 58 year old widow who just recently purchased a 2 family house with my youngest son in Pittston, Pa. I am a Registered Nurse, who worked Psychiatric Nursing since 1989.

In 2003, while working in North Carolina, as a Travel Nurse (13 week contract at various hospitals), I sustained an injury that has been life changing. My mobility is compromised such that I have to use a walker and am in pain most of the time. I also quit smoking last May 9th (2006) after being a very heavy smoker for over 40 years. I had no problem quitting "cold turkey" and have not had any urge to resume smoking; however, I have gained an additional 50 lbs since quitting, largely due to lowered metabolism. That along with my mobility issues has me ready to do anything to improve tmy quality of life, ie, lose this weight!

I am just scheduled for my first nutritional consult in July and understand it will be 6 to 8 months before the actual surgery is scheduled. Whatever it takes, I'm ready to embark on this journey. I appreciate there being a site such as this one where others in the same circumstances can talk and offer support to each other.

Good luck and God Bless to all in whatever stage of this process you are.

3 months, 1 week after surgery
on August 11, 2008 2:17 pm
My weight is 204 lbs now. I go to the YMCA to aqua-aerobics 5 times weekly and enjoy it very much. I often go one day of the weekend also, just to exercise for a hour. I'm feeling well and very glad I had the surgery.

2 months after surgery
on July 6, 2008 4:51 am
Now, at 2 months post surgery, I'm doing well. Weight is 218 lbs and I'm tolerating the diet. Began supplementing and had my first B-12 shot recently. I see the doctor in three months, he and the dietician say I'm ahead of scheduel in losing weight.

Lots of luck to all, where ever you are in the process!

Less than a week until surgery
on April 29, 2008 3:37 pm
I've been on a liquid diet since April 21st, per instructions of the Geisinger program. Today I weigh 255 and have a BMI of 42.4. I'm feeling eager yet a little anxious about the surgery. For so long it seemed like 'a long time away', and now it feels like it is just around the corner. I'm grateful for the Doctors and Dieticians who have encouraged me and given me valuable information at every turn. Particularly Stephanie, a Dietician who has answered my every question, and never made me feel like it was trivial or dumb. All heath care personnel would do well to take a page from Stephanie's book!

Well, surgery is Monday, May 5th. I'll find out the time on Friday afternoon. Prayers and good thoughts to all,  who are at any stage of this journey .

Less than 2 weeks until surgery!
on April 22, 2008 5:33 am
Well, I began the liquid diet given by my WLS doc, yesterday. I'm presently 259 lbs. I was able to lose a lot of weight by following the "minimal carbs, control portions and drink protein drinks", regimen suggested by my doc!

On May 5, 2008 I will have an open RNY at Geisinger, Danville, Pa. Dr Anthony Udekwu is my surgeon. I will have lifetime follow-up at Geisinger Wyoming Valley with Dr Still and the Dieticians.

I'm excited and a little scared. I have been following all instructions, and know I will follow them after surgery. I want to have a better quality of life!

7 Months later

I had my first visit with the Nutritionist and doctor at Geisinger on July 11, 2007. My weight was 340 lbs with BMI of 53.3.

It is now February 15, 2008. I have completed the p[rogram of testing, support groups, etc and just received my approval from my  insurance  yesterday. I have an appointment with the surgeon scheduled for March 28, 2008. I wanted to wait until spring to have the surgery as our weather (and driving conditions) can be tricky. My weight today is 270 lbs.and my BMI is 43.6. I have been able to lose a lot of weight prior to surgery, as was suggested by Dr Still, by stopping all simple carbohydrates and using portion control with all foods.

I also go to the pool at the YMCA here in town and do water aerobics 3
x's weekly and exercise in the water another 2 or 3 days per week.
