Surgeon TestimonialAnthony UdekwuI had my first appointment for consult with nutrition management at Geisinger Medical Center on April 3rd, 2008. I must go through a 6 month program there with classes, tests, and diet before I can have this surgery.
I had my Surgical Consult with Dr. Udekwu on Oct. 7th, 2008. He was very nice and very knowledgeable and experienced. I found out he does both RNY and DS Open procedure at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. now. We both discussed my options and we both decided that BPD/DS was the best choice for me. I am scheduled for my DS on Sat. Oct. 25, 2008. I highly recommend Dr. Udekwu to everyone. He did Bariatric sugery in Ohio and Texas before moving here to Central PA. He also does general surgery and trauma surgery at GMC. I will update more after my surgery about my surgery and post op care.

If you Love Peanut Butter and would like to try something natural that has 80% Less Fat and Calories of Regular PB and still has great PB taste and good protein, it is great in yogurt, shakes, etc. It contains only 1/5 the fat and calories of regular PB...Go to http://bellplantation.com and use maryellen57@dejazzd.com as your email refferal when you buy. It is great for pre or post op WLS patients or for anyone that loves PB and does not want all the fat and calories that regular PB contains... It is called PB2... They now have PB2 Chocolate.

Finished my 6th Month Final Program Visit - on to see Surgeon n on September 18, 2008 1:18 pm
I had my 6th Bariatric Program Visit on Sept. 12th. I lost 2 more lbs and need to lose about 9-10 lbs more before surgery. I had my Ultrasound for my liver and gallbladder done at this visit as well as an EKG. I do have gallstones so I will need to have my gallbladder out when I have my Open RNY. I paid off my program fee which was $355 for me since I already had the book by Barbara Thomas, I got a credit of $20 for that. I got the go ahead from the program director as well as my dietician and psych. to see the surgeon now.
My Surgical Consult will be on Oct. 7th with Anthony Udekwu at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. I am hoping to have my Open RNY surgery by this surgeon sometime around Mid Nov. through Early Dec. I will update here when I have a date for sure. I will be on a 2 week liquid diet before surgery. I am so excited to finally be through the 6 month program and to be seeing my surgeon. I hope to join you on the losers bench in a couple of months. Best wishes to everyone here on OH. Yippie for Me...

MY 5th OF 6 Monthly Program Visit at GMC for WLS on August 27, 2008 2:16 pm
I Had my 5th Bariatric Program Visit at GMC on Aug. 11, 2008. I saw Dr. Still and he was pleased with my progress, even though I gained 2 lbs due to the local fair last week. I tried to eat smaller portions and healthier choices. He decided to go with my top weight before starting the WLS Journey so set the starting weight at 311 instead of 307.5. He did not say any specific amount pf weight to lose yet before surgery but I hope to get to 280 before surgery, which will make it 30 lbs lost before surgery if I do that. Nothing was said about my blood work I had in July but Dr. Ronco, my PCP said everything looked great with my blood work that he recieved from GMC. I was also neg. for the virus that causes ulcers in the stomach. My blood sugars are very good as well as my blood pressures have been very good. I still have a lot of back pain and I am hoping this surgery will help relieve some of that stress on my body. I had my last class about the surgery itself and the surgeons and what to expect at this visit as well.
I have the green light from Physc and the dietician. I paid $160 on my $355 program fee today. I will pay the other $195 at my Sept. Visit on Sept. 12th, 2008. I will have an ultrasound done for my liver and gallbladder at this next visit and an EKG. I will see the DR. and get weighed today also. If all is in order and my program fees are all paid up, I should be scheduled to see the Surgeon in Oct. and hopefully schedule Surgery for sometime in Nov. or early Dec. at the latest. I am getting excited and anxious to get through the rest of this bariatric program and have this surgery done.
I think some of the ladies from Christ Comm. Church here in Glen Iron, PA. will come help me for a few days after I get home from the hospital and possibly my estranged husband Steve may be here living with me at that time and he can be here to help and support me also. I am keeping positive thoughts and praying for all to go well and the Lord's Will be Done. I am keeping my Faith and look forward to my next steps toward this life saving surgery and journey and a healthier better quality of life ahead for my future.

My 4th Monthly Appointment at GMC in Danville, PA. on 7/10/08 on July 14, 2008 6:45 am
Yeah, I had my 4th monthly program visit at GMC in Danville, PA. on July 10th, 2008. I had a lot done there this day. I had my Metabolic test done and found out I burn 1800 calories while sitting all day so I need to eat less than this to continue to lose weight which I have been doing for a while now. I have lost 15 lbs since I started the program in April. I have 15 lbs more to go to meet my pre-op goal to have RNY surgery. I have just 2 more months in the program yet until I can see the surgeon and get a date set.
Once I meet all my requirements I can see the surgeon and set up a date for RNY. I had a lot of labs done on July 10th, 2008 as well as collection of stool to check for the bacteria H-Pyloric that causes ulcers as well as a urine sample given today. I also had my Psych. evaluation and got approved and the green light from them to have the surgery. I also saw a dietician and got approved and the green light from her. I do need to find someone to come stay with me after I get home from surgery. I do not have much family left anymore and most of my family works or lives pretty far away. My closest friends also live pretty far away and my surgery may not be until Nov. or Dec. and with the Holidays I may not be able to find someone to stay with me for a few days to a week. I do think I can get support and someone to come help me at least part of those days after surgery from some very nice ladies from my Church.
I still have to lose 15 lbs and pay my program fee of $355 that my insurance does not cover to meet my goals before surgery. I have 2 more months to get those things done. I go back on Aug. 11, 2008 for my 5th Monthly visit and will have a Surgery Class and see the nurse in the clinic.
Then on Sept. 12th will be my 6th and final monthly program visit and I will see the program director and dietician and also have an EKG and an Ultrasound of my liver and gallbladder that day. If I have lost anothr 15 lbs and paid my program fee in full by that time, I should then be scheduled to see the surgeon in Oct. and at that appointment set up a date for RNY. Right now they are saying I should have Open Rny due to my size but if I have lost more weight than my goal, I may be able to have it done Lap Rny. My program director Dr. Chistopher Still is also doing research on dna and genes with Obesity study and will also be doing a Biopsy of my Liver when they are inside doing my surgery. It will not cost me anything but may help them with research in finding out how genes and such affect the liver and obesity.
I am also practicing what I will need to be doing after surgery such as eating small portions on a small plate and chewing very well and very slowly. I am trying to drink at least 48-64 oz of Non Carbonated, Sugar Free, Caffiene Free Liquids each day and only between meals and Not with meals. This is the hardest one for me to do so far, I am so used to drinking with my meals. I am eating Low Sugar, Low Carb and Low Fat foods now, concetrating on Protein First and then some veggies, fruits and Whole Grain Foods. I am also trying to walk more and be more active. I have gone to 2 Support Group Meetings which is required by my program too but I plan to attend more Support Group Meetings closer to my area as often as I can both now and after my surgery and of course I get lots of support and info. from OH too and I will continue to learn all I can from the great people here as well. I cannot wait until this process is over so I can get my RNY surgery and be on the losers bench. I wish it could be in Oct. but they are booked up at least 1-2 months for surgeries so it looks like Nov. is the earliest I can have surgery. I appreciate all the support here and thank you ALL for your kindness and helpful info.

3rd Monthly Program Visit June 2, 2008. on June 7, 2008 11:55 am
I had my Third Montly Appointment at Geisinger on June 1, 2008. I lost another 3 lbs and stand at 296 according to their scale so I have lost a total of 11 lbs since I started the program in April. I am doing very well with my diet and I am to continue with that along with a little more excercise each day.
I had a Behavior Class with other program class mates and learned a lot about the upcoming months and diet before and after surgery, etc. I go back on July 19th for my 4th Monthly Program Visit for a Metabolic test and to see 2 DR's and a Dietician and I am hoping to schedule my Pysc. Eval. on July 19th as well and I will also get orders at that day for blood work and ultrasound studies to have done in July or Aug.
I am feeling more energetic and some of my clothes are getting loser and it feels great, hoping to lose move before surgery, need to lose about 19 lbs more before surgery and I am very confident that I can do it now. I do not get the cravings like I used to and I measure all my food and stay under 1800 Cal. that I am limited to eat. I am eating very healthy now with whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies and good lean meats and have cut out all soda's, caffiene and drinking water and sugar free and decaf beverages now. I have cut out all snacking between meals and eat 3 meals per day and a snack in the evening to help keep my blood sugars level overnight. I have diabetes type 2 and my sugars have been great, sometimes on the low side lately so I may need to reduce my meds for that soon too. This is an amazing experience and I am looking forward to having RNY by Nov. or Dec. at the latest. I was hoping to have it done in Oct. but there is a long waiting list for the surgeons so I will probably have to wait unti Nov. or Dec. to have it done.
Wishing You All The Very Best and God's Blessings in Your Journey... My Lord Jesus is with me and helping each step of the way and I have No Doubts at all that this is the right decision for me...
