Just remember you

weird now, but know
that you are cared
for and prayed for
here, and all too
soon this will be
but a memory and you
will be an
inspiration to
someone else. I am
waiting for you on
the losers' bench! ~

My name is Maureen (Mo) McDonald, and I reside in Northern Kentucky with my partner, Paula and our 16-year-old son, Andrew. On 12/17/07 I had my Lap RNY, performed by Dr. Tom Sonnanstine! I feel as if I have been given the greatest gift one could ever receive, the chance to start over. I am totally committed to the changes I will need to make, and my new life will soon begin!

6 months postop on June 21, 2008 7:24 pm
I am now 6 months postop and had my 6-month checkup yesterday. I go for fasting labs Monday morning to make sure all my blood work is okay. I will return to the doctor in 6 months for my 1-year postop check, and I should be at my goal weight by that time. I am down 87 pounds and have gone from a size 28 to a size 14. I am having no problems and still feel no hunger.
I feel wonderful! Paula and I have been trying to walk in the park every evening.

Almost 5 months out from surgery! on May 4, 2008 9:44 am
What a beautiful Sunday morning! Today I am almost 5 months out from surgery, and am feeling better than I have in 30 years! I have lost 75 pounds to date, and have gone from a size 28 to a size 16. I will try to get some recent photos uploaded soon. The school year is almost over for our kiddos, and I am ready for my summer break! This is the time I love to catch up on my reading and organize the house which gets neglected sorely when I am working. Andrew is REALLY ready for his summer break also!
Perhaps the biggest new though, other than how great I feel, is that..............
I am going to be a grandma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Katie and Jeremy are going to have a baby in late November! I am so excited! I have been waiting for this for a long time. I am so glad I will be a thinner, healthier, more vibrant grandma that I would have been had I NOT had the surgery!

Today is my special day! 12/17/07 on December 17, 2007 12:59 am
Today is the day! I have been up since about 3:00 a.m. Initially Jingles woke me up, and I just decided to stay up, still fearing I would oversleep and my surgery would be cancelled. I have been alternating from pacing the house to browsing the stories of all my friends here who have already taken these first steps of their journey. I have re-read portions of Susan Leach's book "Before and After", and checked my hospital bag several times to make sure I have not forgotten anything. All my puttering around woke Paula about 3:30, and she is also up for good. In a few minutes I will be smelling the aroma of coffee, but will only be able to lust for it in my heart! I'm sure today will be a whirlwind of activity, and then a nice long sleep.
It appears from most of the journals I have read, that I will not remember much of today, which is probably good!
I will be back here in the next few days to post. I am praying for all the "December 17th Surgery Sisters" I've met, and am wishing them well today also.

My Story I am a 55-year-old mother of 2. I have a life time partner of almost 13 years who is my biggest support. I have a married 27-year-old birth daughter who lives in Lexington, and I have a 15-year-old adopted son still at home. My life is a happy one, and I am at a place where I feel content and totally comfortable with who I am, except for how bad I feel carrying around these 12 extra bowling balls every day. As the years pass and I am still very heavy, my knees ache more, and I get out of breath easier. I would be embarrassed to let anyone see how I have to get up from the floor on those rare occasions when I find myself ON the floor! I know I am beautiful on the inside, and now I want to feel better and healthier on the outside.

As a child I was always thin, but had 6 siblings, and there was not always an abundance of food to go around. When I was in my 20's and still had siblings in their teens, my mother died suddenly of a stroke. She was only 55 years old. Granted, she abused her body with alcohol, cigarettes, and overeating, but it was a shock to us all. When my father received her death certificate it read the cause of her death as morbid obesity. He was furious! He died a few years later of multiple myeloma. I see how much she has missed by watching us all grow up, and start our own families. I do not want that route for me.
I did not begin to gain any weight until my pregnancy with my daughter, now 27 years old. I gained 75 pounds and yo-yoed it off and on for many years until I just gave up! Gradually more weight appeared. At only 5'2" it is so much worse! Ugh! My daughter has been married to a wonderful husband for 3 years now, and soon they will be starting a family. I am looking forward to many years of playing with grandchildren!
At the age of 40 I adopted a tiny preemie while fostering fragile infants. He has many special needs, and I would like to be able to keep up with him for many years to come. He is the joy of our lives. My partner is a second mother to him, and together they do some fabulous guitar battling on Guitar Hero!
We have two wonderful cats who have adopted us, and always know when one of us has had a rough day and will snuggle up to that person as soon as they sit down.
I work as a Special Education Para Educator as a personal aide to an 8-year-old girl with CP. This is my third year in school with her but I've been in the school systems for many years off and on working with multihandicapped children and adults, which requires a lot of lifting. This has kept my upper body strong, and has helped me maintain some fashion of fitness throughout the years.
I know this will sound silly, but one thing I really want to do is run marathons. I ran in high school for a bit, and just really want that to be a goal of mine in the next couple of years. I love being outdoors, and running is such a freeing feeling! I don't have to come in first, but I know I will not come in last either!
That's a bit about me.
