Surgeon Testimonial

Wade Barker, M.D.
Dr. Barker was great. He was very detailed and thorough in explaining what was going to happen next and what I needed to do to get approved. The office staff that I met was very friendly professional, but their is this one chick that answers the phone that shall remain nameless. She could use some professional development. Otherwise, with my limited experience, I would say that the doctor seemed like a great surgeon. I know that they do offer an aftercare program but, I can't be a judge of that yet. He did perform my EGD. It was pretty weird because I remember getting wheeled into the operating room, being put under the anesthesia, and it seemed like I just woke up. No pain, no sore throat! So at this rate, I'm very pleased with my choice.

Friday is your day! Just remember you are on the journey of a lifetime. Try to enjoy every minute. It may sound weird now, but know that you are cared for and prayed for here, and all too soon this will be but a memory and you will be an inspiration to someone else. I am waiting for you on the losers' bench!

5 Month Surgiverssary
on May 14, 2008 4:33 am
I made my goal!! Of course, one of my big things was to make it to Onederland by my birthday. I'm a week shy of turning 29 and I'm 196.8lbs (every ounce counts!) I've lost 87lbs so far. So I am enjoying the new me. I'm dating now, and I haven't told that special someone about my wls. I don't even know when it will be appropriate to say, especially since it's only been about 6 weeks. So who knows where that road is leading?!? I'm so looking forward to the summer break; its less than 15 days away! By my 6 month surgiversarry, my goal is to work out 5 times a week because for the most part, I will be sitting on my @$$ all summer.

My Cinco De Mayo Trip To Onederland!!
on May 5, 2008 6:11 am
It's kind of weird since I don't feel any differently from today to yesterday. I just know that I got on the scale and finally saw 199.6!! I thought I would have jumped for joy, but as exciting as it is KNOWING I'm in the 100s, it's no comparison to the emotional joy of: spending time with friends and family, finding out your best friend is pregnant, or being in love with that special someone. I guess I'm just in a place where the joys I share with others is more enjoyable than these personal milestones. I'm not at my goal weight or anything (not that I even know what that truly is). I think I have a goal size, I want to be a size 8, I think. I don't know what that will look like on me. My lowest adult weight and size was 170lbs and a size 12! I can wear a tight 14 now. I don't know, I'm just rambling. I just wanted to share that I finally reached that goal, 16 days before my birthday! Thank you God for this gift!!

4 Month Surgiverssary!
on April 15, 2008 4:19 am
I am losing the weight at a steady pace. I'm actually looking forward to the summer. I can so see me wearing shorts this year. I've lost about 78lbs. I really focus on weights and crunches when I go to the gym. It seems like no matter what, the weight is still coming off. I do try to eat right and exercise, but cardio is not important to me right now. Everything on my body is soft, so that's a little scary. I don't know what the "end product" will be, but I'm definitely being noticed more. That's always good for the self-esteem. I've been using Bio-Oil consistently for the stretch marks and surgery scars for like 3 months. I really think that it works, maybe even good to try before wls. It makes things less noticeable. I'm enjoying life, even starting to test the dating waters. Well things have been good for me, so I hope everything is good for you too.

3rd Month Surgiversary (A Day Late And A...)
on March 16, 2008 3:03 pm
Short and simple. Life has been great. Spring Break is here and I finally went out. St. Patrick's Day was my debut. We had so much fun!! I've lost about 63 lbs. If I lose about 25 more lbs in the next two months, I will reach a really big goal, which was be be in onederland by May!! We'll see. I got my belly button pierced!! I'm so excited about that one!! What's a girl to do when your drunk friend is getting a tattoo and you're not into ink?!? I can't wait to debut that! My food intake is good. I go out, but I've stopped trying to order food. My friends are so great! I might order an appetizer to share and then eat off their plates! I haven't ran into anything that I can't eat lately, from Taco Cabana to P.F. Changs, and I'm not food obsessed. I'm looking forward to the future and enjoying every moment!

2nd Month Surgiversary
on February 14, 2008 9:00 pm
It's Valentine's Day! So what I'm loving right now is the fact that I'm at 231lbs and I've lost 52lbs so far. What I'm not loving is that I went to Bob's Steakhouse and Chops and I threw up most of my food because I ate too much and I think they put Coke in my Cuba Libre, when I specifically asked for Diet Coke. I also hate that we followed that up with Martini Park and we got complimentary champagne, which also had me running for the bathroom because I couldn't handle the bubbly. Otherwise, things have gone well. I'm satisfied with my weight loss thus far. I've been able to eat pretty much anything I've wanted as long as my food was in the right portions. The main area where I need improvement is that I do need to go back to the gym. I had been exercising on the weekends and for the last 2 weeks, I haven't even done that! The good thing is that I've gone from "morbidly obese" to "severely obese." Anyway, those are my updates for now...

My Story

Hello fellow obesity helpers. I'm Melia, a 28 year old high school teacher. I've been battling my weight since freshman year in high school. As my weight began approaching 200lbs, I knew that something had to be done. I started making regular visits to a nutritionist and became involved in sports and I was very comfortable with my 30lb weight loss. My weight stayed pretty stable until I graduated college. The stress of becoming a teacher, among other things was the start of very bad eating habits. Every year, I found myself gaining 20 pounds. Once I hit 220 lbs, I really started the never ending cycle of yo-yo dieting, gaining more weight with each cycle until I reached my current weight of 275. I first tried to get approved for surgery in 2005. I was denied for failing to meet the requirements. I started jumping through the customary hoops to become approved. Later on, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and started to have more aches and pains with less energy. Then in 2006 I switched districts only to find out their insurance provider excluded WLS.So all of my plans were put on hold indefinitely. As I was signing up for my insurance benefits this school year, I got the good news. My district has switched to my original insurance company, the company that I had when I first started this process. And then in October 2007, I got even better news; I was approved. At this point, I'm just dealing with the fears of my approaching surgery and taking it step by step. My final consult with the surgeon is Nov. 6, 2007...
