Surgeon Testimonial

Steven C. Poplawski, M.D., F.A.C.S.
My first impression of Dr. Poplawski was \"What an excellent person!\" He talked to the whole group in the beginning but it felt like he was talking only to me and that he understood just what it felt like to be sitting in my place. He spent plenty of time with my husband and I discussing the RNY procedure and what the aftercare would be like. I feel completely confident that he is the only Doc to do my surgery. He is a straight shooter but his level of empathy and respect for his pt's is notable.

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I was a mess. I lost and gained HUNDREDS OF POUNDS over the years. I hated myself. I shied away from mirrors, and eventually began staying in the house so people wouldn't stare. I was ashamed of myself, and didn't want people to see me like that. It was a nightmare, living nightmare from which I never could wake up.

I win!
on October 8, 2012 5:04 pm
Just wanted to share a HUGE NSV! I just passed my one year surgiversary a week and a half ago. Prior to my surgery I was a heavy smoker and was so short of breath that one flight of stairs made me really winded. the combination of my weight and the smoking made exercise impossible. This past weekend I ran a race and ranked #34 with a 27:34 5k time. I couldn't be more proud!

First footrace today!
on September 3, 2012 5:28 pm
Me at the starting line on the Mackinaw Bridge this morning. This bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the world, uniting the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. Foot traffic is only allowed on this bridge 3 times a year, today being the annual Labor Day event. I walked/ran the 5.6 miles with my son. It was amazing, and I cannot believe how excited I am to be running this same bridge October 6th in my very first competitive foot race! I love my RNY!

overweight :-)
on July 20, 2012 4:39 am
BMI says I am no longer obese....just overweight! Having been morbidly obese this feels fantastic! I am starting to notice that even my littlest outfits are getting too big....WOW! After fighting my thyroid disease for four months whilst stalled this is so joyful to me. I love my RNY! Hoping to get to goal at #164 :)

Onederland!
on July 13, 2012 5:06 am
SO after months of being stalled due to hypothyroidism and malabsorption of my synthroid, I am losing again! And I am now in ONEDERLAND!!!! Thank God I finally made it! I am running a 5k three times a week, and am healthier than I have ever been. I am the tiniest 199# girl I have ever met, and wear medium tops and 8/10 bottoms. Iam hoping to get to goal by Christmas, but if I never do I would be happy because I like myself just like this! I love my RNY! Thank you sooo much to those of you that stuck with me through the misery of being stalled while doing all of the right things :) I am soooo happy!

My thyroid levels must be normalizing because I have lost 5# this week! Thank God!

My Story

My story is not unlike many others. I am a 31 year old wife and mother of two beautiful boys. I am a registered nurse with an excellent career. Sound good so far? Here's the catch.I have been obese all of my life. At least since I was 7 or 8. I can remember weighing 170# in 6th grade. I never fit into regular sized clothing. I have never felt comfortable in my own skin. I have never weighed less than 180# as an adult. I have been tossing around the idea of bariatric surgery for 5 years now but didn't really feel ready to do it until 2 years ago. At that time I had Priority Health insurance and they have a written exclusion for WLS so I was pretty much shot down when I attempted the referral process in 2004. I have since changed jobs and I now have BCBS Community Blue PPO and I think I am going to make it this time. I am excited and impatiently awaiting for my journey to begin.
