Day 2 of the 2 week Pre-Op Diet (Surgeon's...
on March 30, 2010 3:40 pm

Today is Day 2 of my pre-op diet. I'm not sure if this is something that every bariatric surgeon "requires" but Dr. Coates does. During the 4 hour pre-op class, the nurse that was teaching told us that it is very important to have a very low calorie diet to shrink the liver for surgery. Since the surgery is laparoscopic, the liver must be light and small enough for the tools to hold it up while the surgeon does the RNY. I remember at my husband's pre-op class (he had RNY 2 yrs ago) there was actually a girl in there that did NOT do the 2 wk diet and when they opened her up for surgery her liver was way too big. So they closed her up and sent her home and also told her to attend another 4 hour class!! Needless to say, I am afraid! BUT just knowing my surgery is coming up has made my appetite shrink and I've lost 8 lbs in the last week. I am back down to 248 with a BMI of 38. This is what I was at when I was told to gain to get approved.. lol Isn't it ironic?

It's hard to stick to this diet. But I am doing pretty well. Here is an example of a day on the diet:
(taken from my surgeon's book)

Breakfast: 1 hard boiled egg, 2 oz fresh apple slices
(1 vitamin, 1 coq10)
Mid-Morning Snack: 8 oz nonfat milk with protein powder

Lunch: 1 1/2 oz chicken, 2 oz fresh vegetables

Mid-Afternoon Snack: 8oz any fluid (calorie and sugar free) with protein powder

Dinner: 1 1/2 oz fish, 2 oz fresh vegetables, 2 oz fresh fruit
(1 vitamins, 1 coq10)

1-2 oz is not a whole lot, I will tell you that. But I am getting mentally prepared, so it's been ok. I must say that today I did plan to go to a Japanese restaurant with my friend, to have rice one more time... I ate half the rice, some teriyaki beef (2 oz), tempura veggies (1 carrot, 1 sweet potato, 1 broccoli, 1 green bean), 3 pieces california roll sushi and Miso soup. And a glass of unsweetened iced tea. Now, a few hours later, I am having a protein drink (Nectar Kiwi Strawberry mixed with ice water-- actually tastes pretty decent). So I still ate healthy, but didn't follow the plan to a T. The point is to lose weight and get in the habit of getting a lot of fluids in and my protein. As long as I keep dropping a little bit of weight, my liver should be fine.  I am so excited for surgery and a little nervous. But I am ready to make the change!! Can't wait to have this tool to help me be healthy!!

APPROVED and SCHEDULED!
on March 19, 2010 11:11 am
Well, 2 days ago I found out I was approved for Gastric Bypass and scheduled for my surgery and pre-op and post-op. I am SOOOOO excited and soooo happy. I was seriously starting to think that I was not going to be approved and was going to have to figure out some way to get the weight off that I hadn't tried- which leaves just about NOTHING... I've pretty much done it all....

BUT I WAS APPROVED!

I cannot wait. I start the 2 week pre-op diet on March 30th... and I am already scheduled for the 4 hour class on March 23rd...My life is going to change for the better and I can't wait.

Still WAITING for approval...and getting...
on March 11, 2010 9:48 pm
Trying to stay positive...haven't gotten the approval yet. Called the surgeon's office (Dr Coates) and asked if they'd heard anything...they have not. They said that they submitted a request for approval Saturday..so tomorrow (Friday) will be 6 days after submission. I thought for sure I would know something by now. They seem to think they would know one way or another by Monday... I'd love an answer, especially an approval.  Hoping that tomorrow will be the big YES day...
I did get scheduled to attend the 4 hour Pre-Op Seminar on Tues March 23rd. Hopefully I will know if I am even having the surgery before then!

sigh.....

Next step... SURGERY APPROVAL!
on March 1, 2010 7:29 pm
Had my Psych appointment today...Guess what? I am "normal!" SHOCKING!!! Based on the crazy questionnaire he says I am the type of person who is "confident, ambitious, self-assured, a leader, dominant," and more... He's pretty right. Even as a chubster, I have pretty much always been confident. I have always been ambitious. I am definitely dominant and a leader. I'm a Scorpio, so it's in my nature to be all of those things. I believe in myself and that I can do awesome things in my life and accomplish whatever I set my mind to. BUT above all, I want to be HEALTHY!!! The questionnaire didn't say I was healthy...hahahaha

The psychologist told me that I am an excellent candidate for Gastric Bypass and that this would be my year (which is what I have been telling myself since 1/1/10) and that he would definitely recommend me for surgery! YAHOO!!! He said that he would get his report to my surgeon, Dr Coates, by Friday!! AWESOME! So I intend on calling the first thing Monday morning and making sure they've submitted a request for surgery to my insurance company (Anthem Blue Cross HMO).  I am RIGHT on the dot at 40.0 BMI, so I have been told NOT to lose any weight (literally for the first time in my life!! so wierd)... And for the first time in my life, I am super motivated to lose weight. I am not enjoying maintaining the highest weight of my life (256....makes me choke to even type it). I have been this weight twice, this being the second time...and only because I gained a few lbs to make the bmi MINIMUM. Ugh. Cheeseburgers never tasted sooooo bad! Smart Ones frozen meals are looking better and better just because I feel so uncomfortable in this weight!!! I keep telling myself that I am almost there...
I have decided to start shopping for a dress to wear in Las Vegas for my 30th birthday in October. We are going with a group of friends and a couple of us will be celebrating our 30th, 40th and even 50th bdays! I want to get a dress and hang it up in my room to remind myself of my goal, not only the goal to be smaller, but HEALTHIER! So I am going to start shopping for that dress.... I don't know what size though! All I know is my friend who had bypass about 8 mos ago is in a 12 and started out as a 24-26... so i am thinking 12 is a good place to start. The last time I wore a size 12 I was probably 12. I haven't seen under a size 14 since junior high. OMG! I wonder what I will look like....
I can't wait to get this arthritis pain under control with the weight loss. My knees are going to be screaming for joy instead of pain!

Crossing my fingers still for an APRIL surgery date! Good luck everyone in their journeys and stay tuned to mine!

oh and this month marks my Husband's ONE YEAR GB SURGIVERSARY!~  He's been the epitomy of success...has lost 100 lbs and kept it off. No more high bp and high cholesterol meds, no more sleep apnea!!! He runs! He really runs! Something he NEVER did before surgery. This morning he got off work (graveyard) and ran 2.5 miles!!! I am sooooo proud of him. Not only is he the hot, delicious husband he's always been, but he's so healthy. He is my inspiration! Our son, Hunter, who is 2 1/2, is going to know 2 healthy parents and is young enough to forget the unhealthy bodies we once had. YAY for family health!! SOOOOOOO motivating and exciting!! Yay!
