Surgeon Testimonial

Jordan Garrison, MD
My first impression of Dr. Garrison was that he was obviously a warm, caring person. He meets you with a big smile and hearty hello everytime you meet.

Dr. Garrision participates in a full program which includes seminars prior to surgery, a good last minute walk-thru of everything right before surgery, and an aftercare program that so far has been very supportive.

As a surgeon, I put my faith in him and he did a superb job. I healed quickly with no problems at all in the 3 months since my surgery date.

Personally, I would recommend Dr. Garrison to anyone who is looking for a terrific surgeon who keeps you well informed and does it all with care and compassion!

Tuesday is your day! Just remember you are on the journey of a lifetime. Try to enjoy every minute. It may sound weird now, but know that you are cared for and prayed for here, and all too soon this will be but a memory and you will be an inspiration to someone else. I am waiting for you on the losers' bench!

***********************************************************************

Hi all!

I've been "lurking" around for awhile now but am really getting into the swing with insurance and really hope to have my surgery soon.

I'm attending the post surgery support group at St Clare's in Denville and it's been a great learning experience.   I have talked to many people and am actually seeing what type of issues may arise.  I would recommend going to a few to anyone thinking about the surgery.  It's a great source of information.

Thanks to those that have answered my questions and I look forward to being able to pass that on to others in the future (hopefully not too distant future)

Three months Post Op!
on January 27, 2008 6:59 pm

It's hard to believe I'm 3 months post-op already.   My check-up went well.  I'm down 68 lbs since surgery ( I got down 40 prior to surgery) and I feel great.  I have been going to the monthly support group and have found it helpful.  Lots of good information is shared.  I'm one of the lucky ones - I have had no problems eating any kinds of foods.  Three weeks after surgery, I was eating beef - go figure!

Some items do taste differently but I think that's a good thing because they seem to be the things I shouldn't eat anyway.   An example was my boss bought pizza for everyone so I tried it.  It went down no problem but it just didn't taste as good as before surgery, so I haven't had it since.    Sometimes it bothers me knowing I can eat anything - I guess I thought for the first few months at least if I ate something wrong I would not feel good and that it would deter "bad" eating.  Well, guess I'm on my own there!  LOL

Getting to the gym as much as possible.  My arthritis does keep me from doing as much cardio as I would like but I keep trying to do a little more everyday.  Eventually it's gotta add up & help.

Well, that's all for now!  I'm about half way to my goal but feeling great!

Today is the day I've been waiting for!!

Well, here it is - surgery day!  A little nervous but that's to be expected.  The one bad thing is that I don't have to be to the hospital until Noon.  It has been a long morning (and it's only 8:49).

I'm ready to do this and get on with a healthier life!  A few hours and I am on my wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Ready.... Set..... Go!
on October 3, 2007 7:00 pm

Yesterday I got home from work yesterday (10/2) and found a message from my doctor's office.  I tried calling them, thinking "oh no another insurance problem" but they had already left for the day.   I worried a little but didn't get a chance to call them back until lunch time today (10/3).

What a surprise when they said "YOU GOT APPROVED!"   Wow - I actually got approved - got my pre-surgery appointment - my surgery date (10/30/07) and my post op appointment set up.

It was exciting, nerve wracking, scary, exciting, happy, exciting, my hands were shaky, and oh did I mention exciting?  I understood in an instant what others posted about how they felt when they got their date!

So, I have about a month to listen to all the information - let it soak in and listen again (I've already listened several times).  I'm ready to take on this challenge & lifestyle change head on!

My Story

My story probably begins like a million others....... I've been overweight since as early as age 5 or 6.  I was always the biggest & tallest in class.  Kids can be cruel when it comes to dealing with someone "different" and I always seemed to be in that category.  I tried all the diets - all the Weight Watchers etc - even tried my own plans - some worked but the result was always the same - reduce then gain it back plus more.  Sound familiar?

Well, it all made me very shy around people that didn't know me.  My friends & family always said that I was shy until you get to know me then watch out!  (Boy I hope they meant that in a good way :-)  )  But they also added that once I made a friend they were a friend for life.   I guess that explains my best friends - one from high school, three I met over 25 years ago and one I met 20 years ago.  The others fall into the "under 20" category.

Anyway, I found a wonderful man back in 2002 and fell in love.  Unfortunately, there were several other things going on in my life also - my younger sister passed away and I got some strange pneumonia (cryptococcial) which took about 10 months to clear up.  My BF became my fiance in July of '03 and we planned a wedding for May 2004.  What a wonderful whirlwind we were enjoying!  The wedding and honeymoon were terrific!  People still talk about how it was a great reception!  We cruised to Alaska - a lifelong dream for me - and words can't describe how we felt - until the last night of the cruise.  My husband got sick and to make a long story short, the next month was a nighmare - ending in his passing away in June 2004.  Only one month of marriage didn't seem the least bit fair!

My world fell apart.  I was overweight to start so when things just progressively got worse I had other things to deal with immediately.  It took me about a year to really get back to real life and by then I found myself in the high 300's.  I originally started looking into surgery in '05 but found a doctor that was afraid of dealing with an existing medical problem.  Ofcourse, this was after going through all the tests & nutrition etc.  I was let down again.  In '06 I made an appointment with my current surgeon but had to wait again - this time due to another "more pressing" issue that required surgery.

In March of '07, I began again - finding myself up over 400.   I got my appointments for all the doctors again and took them on one at a time.  By mid May, I had all the appointments completed and was just waiting for one more clearance.  I decided I would "jump start" my weight loss by really trying to concentrate and lose.  At the end of June, I heard that my insurance papers were put through and my first date was July 18th.  Well, that didn't happen because of the insurance co needing more information which I am working on now.

Hopefully this will get straightened out soon and we can try again.

Meanwhile, I can happily say that I have lost between 30 & 40 lbs and am currently at 370.  I feel much better with just that amount gone - I can only hope this all goes through so I can improve my overall health and actually get back to really living life rather than just existing through it!

My new motto is:   KEEP THE SPIRITS UP SO WE CAN GET THE WEIGHT DOWN!
