Surgeon TestimonialPaul Kemmeter, MDCan't say enough about Dr. Kemmeter and the staff at MMPC in Grand Rapids, MI. He is such a great person and an excellent surgeon and very thorough in everything. The Bariartric program at MMPC Weight Loss Specialists is very structured and complete. All aspects of care are done there as well as all testing. They have their own nutritionists, exercise physiologist, psych evals, and all foods needed for pre- and post-op. They do all their own endoscopy, sleep studies, gall bladder scans, etc. They have a very strong emphasis on after-care and are not there just to do your surgery and then let you go.
I would definitely rate Dr. K as a 10 out of 10!

Thought I would post some thoughts here for my last November blog. The weight has continued to drop off this month and I am now down to 158 lbs. and I am thrilled with that. I never could have dreamed that I would be able to get this low again-I didn't think I would even be able to get below 200 lbs. ever again. I am almost 20 lbs thinner than when I got married. But now I find myself still always looking to lose weight every time I weigh myself, and am having a hard time getting my brain to adjust to "maintenance mode." Now I am shooting for 150 lbs. which is the lowest adult weight I can ever remember being. And this would still be a safe weight for me from a bmi standpoint, but I need to learn to stop looking for a loss. I am a little worried that I will just keep losing bit by bit until I am too thin and not realize it. I have for most of my adult life always needed to lose weight, and can't understand the concept of being a normal weight. I did weigh in at work for the "Hold It For The Holidays" thing they do for Healthy Lifestyles. They do this every year as a corporation-it costs $5 and everyone's money goes in a pot at weigh-in week(just before Thanksgiving). Weigh out week is just after the new year. The idea is to either maintain or not gain more than 1 pound over the holidays, or to lose. Everyone who weighs back in at the end and meets the criteria gets to share in the money in the pool, so I am hoping to make a few bucks on this. I should have no problem maintaining or losing. I will post how much I made in Jan. Depends how good everyone does at staying healthy over the holidays-not an easy thing to do!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I AM NORMAL!!!!! Today I weighed 163 lbs. which puts me into the normal BMI range for the first time since probably about 1976. I never could have imagined that this would be possible given my age and all the years I spent obese. The lowest weight ever for me was 150 lbs. so we'll see what happens over the next few months. I definitely don't think I want to be that thin now, and would be very content to get to 160 lbs. and try to stay there. I have suddenly started losing again at a fairly good rate after being kind of stuck since mid August going up and down, but only losing a few pounds over 8 weeks. Haven't changed anything with diet and am still being lazy about exercise, so I guess my body was just in an adjustment period. I did load wood with my DH for a couple of hours on Saturday, so maybe that helped!

Yippeeeee!!!!!! I have hit my goal of losing 200 lbs. It took me three days past my one year surgiversary, but it finally happened. I actually hope to lose another 8 lbs or so to get further into my normal BMI, but the 200 lb. goal was something I had set once I got below 200 lbs. and realized that this might actually be possible. I have not weighed this since my college days. I amalso thrilled that for the most part, all of my one year labs were really good. The only lows were my potassium-from taking a diuretic, and my vitamin A was still just a little below the normal level, but better than it was, so I am heading in the right direction. Magnesium was 1.6 and should be >1.8, so I am going to start taking some of that daily as well. My iron binding capacity was a few points below normal, but all other iron levels were great, and from what I have researched, this is not a concern at this point. My lipid profile Cholesterol 105 Triglycerides 68 LDL 62 HDL 29. The HDL was up from 20 in August, and although it is still low, I am trying to get it to come up, and I think it is working. I am drinking a glass of wine almost daily, and have started using Eggland's Best eggs that are higher in Omega-3 fatty acids, so something seems to be working. My genetics are against me here, but I hope it continues to climb at least back into the 30's. I am busy sewing a lot of new clothes for the winter season-bought a stack of McCall's patterns yesterday at Jo-Ann's as they were all on sale for 99 cents. It is actually fun to sew now that I look decent in clothing!

Well, I have passed my one year mark and didn't make the 200 lb. loss I was hoping for. Got to 199 gone, but now am hovering there, up a pound, down a pound. Kind of what has been my lot in life for the past 6 to 8 weeks. Oh well, since I don't see the surgeon until Dec. for my checkup, I hope I can manage to have a couple more pounds off by then! But I am absolutely thrilled with the way I look and feel, so am really trying not to get hung up on the numbers. It has been quite a life-changing year for me, and even though I spent last night for a few hours in puking misery due to eating too many raw mini carrots, I would do it again in a heartbeat to look and feel the way I do now. I have learned to live with my eating difficulties that still occur at times, and am actually glad I still seem to have a lot of restriction as it keeps me from overeating which is what got me here in the first place.

One more pound to go-can I do it by Sunday? It woud be so great to get to my goal of 200 lbs. gone by my one year surgiversary. I have been in kind of a holding pattern for the past few weeks, but now have started losing again, so maybe I'll make it.
Had my yearly physical on Monday and my PCP was thrilled with my weight loss and everything looked OK. Also had my one year labs drawn and am now dealing with low potassium so have to take 2 horse pills a day now. Just what I need, more pills! I have to go in for an ultrasound next week for some female issues, and I hope all my lab work is back by then so I can find out what my vitamin and iron and calcium levels are doing. I haven't gotten any calls of critical values other then the potassium, so I guess everything is OK. Also got a call from the surgeon's office and they had to cancel my one year appt. and couldn't fit me in until December 17! Kind of disappointed with that, but they are moving their practice to a new location, no longer associated with MMPC. So I can see how that would affect appointment availability(I guess). I'll post again when I get the labs back and hit my goal!

My Story
I am new to OH but love it!! It was reccomended by the surgeon's office here in Grand Rapids, MI. I have been wanting to have weight loss surgery for many years, but my husband's ins. wouldn't cover it. So I switched jobs and picked up my own coverage and hope to get this done yet this year! I have been overweight/obese all my life especially worse last 20 years since having children. I always managed to deal with it by forcing myself to stay as active as possible for a fat lady!! But as I am now past the age of 50 I find it more and more difficult to live with and the joint pain is getting worse. So, here I go into the WLS world. I need to lose about 200 lbs. so this is going to be life changing(I hope) I so appreciate all the info on the message boards from all who have been through all the stages of WLS. It has been very helpful to me in making an informed decision as to my surgery.
