Surgeon Testimonial

Paul Kemmeter
Can't say enough about Dr. Kemmeter and the staff at Grand Health Partners in Grand Rapids, MI. He is such a great person and an excellent surgeon and very thorough in everything. The Bariatric program at GHP is very structured and complete. All aspects of care are done there as well as all testing. They have their own nutritionists, exercise physiologist, psych evals, and all foods needed for pre- and post-op. They do all their own endoscopy, sleep studies, gall bladder scans, etc. They have a very strong emphasis on after-care and are not there just to do your surgery and then let you go. rnI would definitely rate Dr. K as a 10 out of 10!

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
Endless diets over the last 40 years. I can lose weight but cannot keep it off. I had finally gotten to the point of not even being able to make myself diet anymore because I knew I would fail at some point. I had thought about bariatric surgery for years and finally decided to do it.

I have been slackin' on the bloggin' so here's an update! My biggest news is that I bought myself a treadmill las week Friday! I am sick of trying to get my exercise out in this winter weather that never ends. I got a really good deal from American Home Fitness as they had a sale on and they had one some one had ordered and they had all set up and then he changed his mind and bought a bigger one, so they gave me another $100 off to take that one. So I got it for $1299 instead of $1699. And Spectrum Health where I work will pay for fitness equipment and let me pay it back over one year on payroll deduction with no interest or fees, so I didn't have to put out a dime for it(so far). Now I really have no excuse not to exercise, and that is where I am going when I get done here. I like the pre-programmed workouts it has in it.
Otherwise, not much new. I am down 117 lbs. as of today so that is still going well. I still struggle with eating and any amount of volume is so difficult yet, but it is slowly improving I think. Part of the problem is that I am never hungry and I always feel like I am forcing myself to eat. And I know after the first 3 bites I will get the crampy overfull feeling I hate, so I am almost to the point that eating is something I dread many times. But I feel great and have lots of energy and love the weight loss, and would do this all over again in a heartbeat. I have traded the misery of being obese for the difficulty with eating, and the eating thing I can live with, I decided, as it doesn't affect all aspects of my life like the obesity did.
The other problem is that my hair shedding has increased over the past couple of weeks, which is normal I guess, and my hair is so thick it still looks fine, but I can tell it is thinner. I talked to my hair dresser yesterday when I got it cut and she suggested I try the Nioxin, so I bought the 3 step set and will see if that helps. I just don't want to have it all fall out!

Just a quick update. I cheated and weighed myself today even though I pretty much refuse to allow myself to get on the scale more than once a week. But I just had to know if I lost more because I have been dying to get my BMI below 40! And WOO-HOO!!!! I was down 2 more lbs. so I now officially have a BMI below 40! It has been many years since I have seen that, so I'm all excited. The other thing I have been trying to decide is whether to raise my goal weight. I have, in my early college years been as low as 150 lbs. but I realize that is unrealistic for me at age 52. I chose 168 lbs. because I started at 368 lbs. and that gave me an even 200lbs. to lose. But according to the Tanita body composition assessment they did at the surgeon's office last July, my FFM(Fat Free Mass-everything that isn't fat) weight is 161 lbs! So that would make 168 rather unrealistic. I'm sure my bones weigh a lot more now after carrying excess weight all those years, not to mention the extra skin. So I have been thinking about making my goal weight 184 lbs. as that would be exactly half of what I weighed at the start of all this. It leaves me in the overweight BMI range, but I do think that whole BMI thing is not always right for everyone at all stages of life. I just don't want to set a goal that is not attainable.
