Surgeon Testimonial

Paul Kemmeter
Can't say enough about Dr. Kemmeter and the staff at Grand Health Partners in Grand Rapids, MI. He is such a great person and an excellent surgeon and very thorough in everything. The Bariatric program at GHP is very structured and complete. All aspects of care are done there as well as all testing. They have their own nutritionists, exercise physiologist, psych evals, and all foods needed for pre- and post-op. They do all their own endoscopy, sleep studies, gall bladder scans, etc. They have a very strong emphasis on after-care and are not there just to do your surgery and then let you go. rnI would definitely rate Dr. K as a 10 out of 10!

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
Endless diets over the last 40 years. I can lose weight but cannot keep it off. I had finally gotten to the point of not even being able to make myself diet anymore because I knew I would fail at some point. I had thought about bariatric surgery for years and finally decided to do it.

Well I weighed myself again yesterday and I was down 3 lbs., so it must have just been fluid retention. I think I ate too much salty food this weekend. I think I have discovered my transfer addiction....it is preparing food! I have substituted playing with food for eating it. I pour through recipes and am constantly trying new things, and my poor DH is the victim of all this! I do try to make things that I can also eat. Some are successful and some aren't. I grocery shop 3 or 4 times a week for wierd ingredients I need for something. I watch the Food Network almost exclusively if I have the TV on. I always liked to bake, but since that produces mostly carbs I shouldn't have, now I am into cooking and am loving it. I guess it is better than gambling or shopping or alcohol or something!! My latest success is a Japanese cucmber salad made with cucumbers, radishes and carrot matchsticks. It has a dressing of rice vinegar and sugar. I made it to put on wraps made of deli chicken breast, provolone cheese, baby spinach, yellow pepper rings, gren peppers, and the cucmber salad. Wrapped in a whole grain low carb wrap and topped with Newman's Own Light Honey Mustard dressing. To die for, and about 25 grams of protein. I also made egg salad again today which I love. The great thing is that I get all the fun of fixing food, but still can't eat much at all, so am still losing weight! I love my DS!!!!!!!!!!!!

GRRRRRRRR!!! I am kind of bummed out today. I didn't lose any weight in the past week, and I have been pounding the treadmill faithfully 7 days a week. So I thought I would take my measurements to see if that had changed, and no change there either!. So I have only lost 1 pound in the past 2 weeks, and no inches. I did have a week last month where I didn't lose, and I swore I wouldn't let it get to me, but that is easier said than done. I am getting into the 10 days before that time of the month, so that is probably part of the problem. I tend to overdo the carbs and sodium because that is what I crave all the time then.
So I got on the treadmill and did my workout of level 2 Weight Loss and made myself do it as programmed because I decided maybe I am not pushing myself enough with the intensity of my workouts. And I think maybe I am eating a few too many carbs as well, so dug out my low carb cookbook and got some meat out of the freezer. I am also going to work harder on getting all of my water in, which I know I don't do, as well as more protein. I never learned to be dependent on protein shakes because early out I couldn't find one I could tolerate. But now I have a soy one, but I never use it! So I am going to make sure I have one of those each day, as it has a lot of Biotin in it, and my hair could use that!
Oh well, at least I didn't gain, and I felt better about things after I did my workout. The thing that always keeps me going is the knowledge that now I have this great tool to help me, and I know the weight will come off over time. Before with dieting when I would get to these plateaus, I would just give up because it was so discouraging.
