Surgeon Testimonial

Paul Kemmeter
Can't say enough about Dr. Kemmeter and the staff at Grand Health Partners in Grand Rapids, MI. He is such a great person and an excellent surgeon and very thorough in everything. The Bariatric program at GHP is very structured and complete. All aspects of care are done there as well as all testing. They have their own nutritionists, exercise physiologist, psych evals, and all foods needed for pre- and post-op. They do all their own endoscopy, sleep studies, gall bladder scans, etc. They have a very strong emphasis on after-care and are not there just to do your surgery and then let you go. rnI would definitely rate Dr. K as a 10 out of 10!

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
Endless diets over the last 40 years. I can lose weight but cannot keep it off. I had finally gotten to the point of not even being able to make myself diet anymore because I knew I would fail at some point. I had thought about bariatric surgery for years and finally decided to do it.

Time for another update-can't believe that it is almost September! Next week is my 53rd birthday, but I feel much younger than that with all this weight gone. This surgery has handed me a whole new life, and I feel as if I have been set free from some prison! I can sit in any chair without worrying that it might break or I won't fit. I can fit in a booth at a restaurant with more than enough room to spare-this still amazes me. I can actually run if I need to. I can work out in the garden for an hour without any problem-nothing tires me. I buy all my clothes in the regular size clothing dept. now-that is a huge accomplishment for me! My only complaint is that I freeze to death now if the temperature drops below 80 degrees! My body hasn't adjusted to temp control without the layers of fat. But it is so nice to have a summer where I am not miserable and hot and sweating all the time. My DH says I'm just weird when I complain of being cold and wear my winter PJ's to bed every night-sometimes with socks on too!
The weight loss has definitely slowed down though. I have been rattling around in the 180's now for the better part of 6 to 8 weeks. I think I am probably only losing 1 to 2 lbs. a month now, so don't know if I will ever get to my goal or not. Not such a big deal-I am very happy where I am at now, but I do hope I can eventually get down into the 170's, which still doesn't put me into the normal weight range on the blasted BMI charts!
Staying busy as the summer ends-we have had my daughter and SIL's great dane dog all week while they are on vacation
and I will be glad to see him leave on Sat. He is a good dog but too huge for this house which already has 2 dogs in it! Tuesday we are going to have a Zoo Day with my sisters and all their kids and grandkids which should be fun. Then Thursday is my birthday and I am moving my baby up to college(he's 20) so it will pretty much be just my DH and me from then on. My 22 yo daughter still supposedly lives at home, but she works and goes to school and is with her fiance most of the rest of the time, so we rarely see her for more than an hour a day. So the nest is almost empty-WooHoo!!

Finally lost a couple of pounds again today. I am finding the loss is slowing a lot, which in a way is a good thing because I am close to goal, but the old scale number obsessed person always wants to see the numbers go down. I only weigh myself weekly, and it sucks to have a couple of weeks with no loss. I am 2 lbs. away from being half the person I was to start-getting down to 184 lbs. has been a mini-goal of mine since I started. Frankly, never thought I would see it, but here I am only two pounds away from that goal at 9 months out from surgery. Only 18 lbs. to go to get to my goal of 168 lbs. Haven't been there since before I got married, somewhere back in the 1970's! Going to the fair today to see the goat show.
