My Story

Hello Everyone: I am currently awaiting my surgery.  Dr. Cunningham's office has given me a date of 8/20/08.  I have been in the program since early Nov. 07.   It has taken me a while and much thinking on whether or not I was doing the right thing.  I have been morbidly obese my whole life. My mother once told my pediatrician that I came out of her womb and just never stopped gaining weight after that. I equate having this surgery like a person who is blind at birth's being able to (for example) have lasix surgery and be able to see the world as never before.  It is both  scary and exciting at the same time.  I have many worries over surgery never having had any before but I know in my heart that this is the path I must be on in order to really live life. I once weighed 450 lbs. (my highest scale known weight) and I struggle in the wls program even now at 385 lbs.  Some days I question myself as to if I am truly committed to this new lifestyle change and then I try to bend over & tie my shoelaces and realize that the very things normal people take for granted, I cannot do without the surgery.
This is a wonderful site for anyone who is even contemplating surgery.  It has proven so helpful to me.  I do have many supportive friends and the people at Dr. C's office have all been terrific.  I hope to be able to help others both along the way (pre-op) and afterwords.  I have read of so many of you all who have been through so much to get where you are today.  I admire you all. I hope to make/meet many new friends along the way.  I have 2 people who I work with who have had the surgery: 1 open (with my Dr.) and one laproscopically-they are both doing terrific and have been so much help to me and so encouraging.  Thank you all for listening and for all of your comments and support.  Take good care.  Mary
