Surgeon Testimonial

David Bruce, D.O.
My impression of Dr. Bruce is that he is very knowledgeable in the field of bariatric. His office staff is always professional and friendily and went beyond the call of duty to get me approved by my insurance company. Dr. Bruce also operated on my 18 year old son successfully. I felt that I was given all the necessary information to have the perfect outcome I had. I have lost 110 pounds and went from a size 20 to 4 and some size 2. He was always available to answer any of my questions or concerns. I would give him a favorable rating and would refer him to anyone in the Dayton area that is thinking about having bariatric surgery. I think that overall I want my doctor to have surgical competence over bedside manner because having him/her perform surgery will have a life time affect on me where as he will only be at my bed for less than a week and I can deal with that :). But I think Dr. Bruce had both surgical competence and great bedside manners. I really don't have anything negative to say about my experience with Dr. Bruce or any of his staff. Also Grandview Hospital staff was awesome also.

6 years and 5 month
on February 2, 2013 11:34 am

I am writing today some 6 years and 5 month later.  I did keep the weight to 120 like I said I would....but 123.2 in not too bad...lol  I plan on getting back to 120 like I promised myself before surgery.  I spent a lot of time reading about so many people gaining most if not all the weight back and I do not want to be on of those people.  I am still exercising almost every day for 1.5 to 2 hours.  I really like the way I look.  Getting toner and if I say so myself really don't look like I am 51.5 years old....lol  Well see you on September 6, 2013 on my 7th year anniversay.

5 years later
on September 23, 2011 10:34 am
Today is September 23, 2011....I can't believe I didn't write something on my 5th year anniversary on September 6th!!!  I think it is because this is the norm for me and eating right and exercising at least 6 days a week.  I still have days that I have to have my chocolate or I will tear out somebody's eyes. :)  I have stopped weighing myself every day but I think I might start back because seeing the number on the scale is still important to me.  I know I said I would not go over 120 but I have been 125 for a while.  I think its mostly because of muscles but I don't want to use that as an excuse.  I no longer fit into a size 2 but I'm still happy with my size 4-6 and small tops!!  It is can of hard to even picture myself in a size 20-22 and 2x top.  The only thing now is that people love to look at your food and make comments about how you eat now versus the first month or so after surgery.  First of all why do you care and secondly....its still no where the amount that you ate...lol  Anyway,  I hope to be able to write next September 6, 2012 that I'm still doing well....Oh I forgot this past February I had a gallstone attack....OMG that was the worst pain ever!!!  I finally had my gallbladder removed in March.  Of course  people love to contribute everything to your WLS...Well hopeful no more surgery for me.  My husband and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary with an Alaskan cruise in July so I can't wait to be skinny on the ship.  I have been on 3 cruises before 2 fat and 1 average but never skinny.  How can I forget to say I TURNED 50 THIS PAST JUNE!!!  I look and feel better than I did at 40!!!

4th Anniversary
on September 6, 2010 1:49 pm
Today is September 6, 2010...4th year anniversay of the day I had my weight loss surgery.  Last year I woke up really early to write....but it almost 5 pm so I guess I'm not as excited about today as I was last year.  The difference I guess is that this year it is real to me that I have the body I deserve and have worked hard to obtain.  I am weight 2.5 pounds over my goal of being 120 for life....but I am exercising 6-7 days a week with about 90 mins. on the treadmill and weight training.  So maybe its muscle...we love to use that as an excuse that its muscle....not fat :)  Anyway my close fit great, yes still a size 4.  This surgery has the best decision I made (besides marrying Melvin and have 2 wonderful children from this union).  But as far as doing something for myself and my sel esteem...this is it.  June I turned 49 and I look better today than I did in my 30's and early 40's.  What a waste to carry all that weight around for all those years.  I don't shop as much as I did the 1st couple of years.  I really don't need any more closet and the newness has worn off.  Melvin and I celebrated 28 years of marriage on the 21st of August and I'm glad he has a fit wife to call his own.  I'm not sure I would call myself a trophy wife...but again...Well lets see what this year brings....of course I plan on keeping up the exercise and doing all I can to look my best when I turn 50 on June 25th....Peace, Love and Happiness....and thinness also!!!

3rd year surgery anniversary today
on September 6, 2009 3:55 am
Good Morning,

It is almost 7 a.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2009.  Three years ago today I had RNY surgery that changed my life drastically.  I remember waking up the morning of surgery knowing that I made the right decision for myself.  My husband who is very supported decided on the elevator up to "short stay" to take that moment to tell me he doesn't think I need the surgery.  I was like oh no don't start that now. :)  I know he was just worried about me and we had been together since high school.  But I knew that I needed to do something else besides trying a new fad diet every other Monday.  I wanted to stop thinking all the time about what I ate, what I should have eaten.  I had set a goal of 115-120 for the rest of my life.  I only saw 115 once on the scale.  Most people thought I was too skinny when I was at 115.  I really liked 118-120.  It is so funny when I find myself comparing 2-4 pounds like that really makes a big difference after losing more than 100 pounds.  But it is a big deal to me.  Too many people are having revisions and/or gaining all their weight back.  I can not be one of these people.  My life is sooooo much better without dealing with being fat.  I have no problems saying I was fat.  I was in a size 20-22 and weighed 225 pounds the day of surgery.  I love to shop.  In fact, on my birthday in June a group of co-workers that exchange birthday gifts gave me a $50.00 gift certificate to Express.  I love that store.  I love shopping.  Clothes that I could only dream about are now in my closet.  Oh I guess I need to add that I didn't just have the surgery to look good but to feel good too. (Yeah right).  I can eat almost anything I want just not that much.  I usually don't order anything at a restaurant just nibble off hubby's plate.  My sister whose 3rd year anniversary is November 6th is my best support person.  We talk about weight and exercise everyday.  We also weigh ourselves every day.  Yeah Yeah we know that the scale is going to vary day by day but this is what we do.  I don't go to any support group meetings anymore because they have changed their locations and a little to far to drive.  Well I think I have said everything I wanted to say on this anniversay date....going out to breakfast with my husband to celebrate!!!   I know it sounds funny to me also.  How do you go out to eat to celebrate losing weight.....well that's what we do.  I promise only to eat a few bites off his plate.  Going to an outlet mall afterwards and got to fix into those skinny jeans.

Another exciting summer
on June 5, 2009 8:18 am
Today is June 5, 2009 and the last day of school for the students at the high school I work at.  I still have to work until June 26th but it will be easy without students and teachers.  I don't have big plans for the summer except to continue to exercise 6 days a week.  I had gotten to 124.8 which is 4.8 pound over the goal I set for 120.0.  So I started working harder with my exercise program and cutting out some of the extra junk I was eating.  Today the scale said 120.6.  I think just to be safe I will continue to lose until I get to 118.0.  My clothes still fit good and now my legs are looking awesome.  I am going to the gym 4 days a week and working out 2 days a week at home.  Now that I don't have my grandson Jamel to take care of during the week I have more time to workout longer.  I usually spend about 1 hour and 45 mins. at the gym and at home 90 mins. on the treadmill.  My sister who also had the surgery 2 months after I did is also working out and looks wonderful.  She is my support person.  We encourage each other to workout and eat right.

My Story

Today is September 26, 2008 and I have been a member since July 2006.  I have never told my story and thought it was time I did.  I had my surgery on September 6, 2006.  At that time my weight was between 222-225 depending on the day.  I had no problems what so ever recovering from the surgery.  I was off work for about 4 weeks but probably could have return after 3 weeks.  I was wearing a size 20 which was getting a little tight around the waist.  But now I am happy to say that I am shopping for a size 2 or 4 and weight 117 pounds.  I hope you don't mind but I would like to say that again.  I am shopping for a size 2 or 4 and weigh 117 pounds.  My whole life has changed since having this surgery.  I am a 47 year old grandmother of two and I feel and look like I don't even have grown children.  I wish I had done this years ago.  Why did I waste my 20s and 30s and half of my 40s looking the way I did?  (I will post pictures soon).  I know there are people waiting for me to start gaining the weight back.  They always tell you about people they know that have gained most of the weight back.  Well I weigh myself every day and I have a five pound window that is 115-120.  When I get closer to 120 I start pulling back with some of extra goodies that I eat.  Yes I can eat a mini snickers and be fine.   I attend support groups occassionally but find that people don't seem to beleive that I had the surgery even when I share my before and after pics.  I don't have loose skin hanging even though I looked into have a tummy tuck a few months ago.  But I decided against it for now.  Well thanks for taking the time to read my story and have a blessed day.
