Surgeon Testimonial

Julie Ellner, M.D.
I had surgery in June 2006 with Dr. Julie Ellner in San Diego, CA.
I was impressed with her knowledge and understanding of obesity issues and her confidence in her skills as a surgeon. She explained the different surgeries and the risks involved in all types. After hearing her lecture I knew that she was the right surgeon for me.
My surgery was performed at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego. The hospital staff was wonderful during the procedure. The care I've received since that time (via telephone) from Dr. Ellner's office staff has always been exceptional as well. Someone is always there to answer my questions and provide support.
Dr. Ellner also provides us with a manuel that answers many questions that come up both before and after surgery. I feel that I made the right choice in both having bariatric surgery and in choosing Dr. Julie Ellner as my surgeon.

Better now and getting back on track...
on January 16, 2008 8:37 pm
Since my last post I have made several changes.  Both Dr. Ellner and my primary care physician called concerned about iron levels and both gave me advice on how to improve (same advice, almost like hearing a replay of the same conversation!).  I have added a few other supplements and changed the time of day when I take my iron.  I'm starting to feel better already!
I have also started going to Jazzercise.  This is the most fun way to excercise ever!  In the summer I ride my bicycle 10 miles every day but haven't done much excercise since the snow hit.  I'm really excited about the Jazzercise class.  In a couple of weeks I plan to add a yoga class as well.  (Of course I'm naturally un-coordinated and can't remember the routines so I zig when the others zag.  It's still fun and no one got hurt so not doing too bad!)
I've already lost 2 of the 5 pounds I gained!  I plan to have the rest off soon (and maybe more!).  This is definitely a live and learn journey...

18 months out and having issues...
on January 12, 2008 1:49 pm
I'm 18 months post op.  I am currently at 150.  I was around 245 before surgery so am happy with the weight loss however, I could stand to lose another 30 pounds.  I made it down to 145 but have gained back 5 pounds.  My issue is snacking.  I crave food and have to find a way to avoid snacking.  Sometimes I feel that I am a fat girl inside regardless of the weight loss.  I don't want to be that fat girl on the outside again.  I like being a normal size (8) and I like the compliments that I get.  I'm trying to find out why I am sabatoging my own progress.  Does my inner self feel like I am destined to fail so the snacking is my way of doing that?  I don't feel as confident as I should with my new look.  I can't really explain this.  I tried seeing a therapist for a while but he wasn't any help in dealing with this.   I don't think he understood ths real issue at all.
I'm still at a good size, I've only gained 5 pounds so it's nothing that can't be overcome.  I need to establish a plan and deal with the real issues going on so I can overcome this.  I wish I could explain it better.  I would love to know how others have dealt with this issue....

My Story

I had my surgery in June 2006.  I did the surgery for health reasons.  I was overweight and on both oral meds and insulin injections for diabetes and meds for high blood pressure.  My mother died at a young age (47) and had a very similar health history.  I did not want that to happen to me.

A co-worker had told me of her experience with bariatric surgery.  When her surgeon, Dr. Julie Ellner, came to town for a seminar I attended her lecture along with my husband and son.  After meeting Dr. Ellner and learning about bariatric surgery I knew I had found a way to change my destiny and live a longer, healthier life.

Since having surgery in June, I have lost 95 pounds and am no longer taking any prescription meds for diabetes or high blood pressure.  I have gone from a size 22 pants to a size 6.  I feel great.

My family has always shown me support.  They have been extremely helpful during the past 9 months and I know they are proud of me.  I still could lose another 20 pounds and hope to accomplish that in the next few months.  However if Inever lose another pound, I am happy with my progress.

I recommend this surgery (and Dr. Julie Ellner!) to anyone with a serious obesity problem.  It has changed my life.
