I am a 49 year old mother of 3 grown children. I have 3 grandchildren and have been married for 29 years. I have been over weight, chunky, plump or what is now called obese for most of my life. There were times when I could diet myself down to quite thin, but alas, they were short lived.

I am looking forward to having surgery, hopefully this spring, to ease the stress on my knees, hips and ankles. I want to be able to keep up with the grandkids and be able to ride my motorcyle again without fearing my legs will give out.

This site is the absolute best. Everyone here is so open with their experiences; I have learned so much and am sure I will learn more.

12 week update
on January 16, 2008 6:04 am

Today marks 3 months since surgery. Yesterdays appointment showed that I have lost 46 ½ pounds. I am thrilled.

My nutritionist thinks things are moving too fast and would like to see me lose a little slower. They consider me a light weight. We have different opinions about how much I should lose as well. I have set my goal for 125 and she seems to think it should be 20 to 30 pounds higher. Since I am only 5 feet tall I don’t want to be 140/150 that is still in the over weight area. I did not go through all the internal rearranging to still be overweight!

My labs all look pretty good. They still would like to see me getting 80 grams of protein. I struggle with the protein thing. I continue to try and get as much as possible. It does get somewhat better but still a struggle.

I still have no appetite which is a good thing. I don’t have a lot during meals but always have the protein first. I have found chicken to be hit or miss. I can eat steak and roast with no problem and shrimp grilled goes down smoothly too.

At this point in time I am avoiding starch although the NUT said I can try adding them. I will probably delay this since: ‘My name is Jan and I am a carb a holic’. I have added fruits and veggies. Salad was always a favorite for me and was happy to be able to add that back into my diet.

Now I don’t have to return until April for my next appointment. It’s hard to believe that will be 6 months out. Can’t wait to see what changes will come. At least the weather should be nicer. Dang Michigan winters…LOL.

Two Week check-up
on November 7, 2007 5:38 am
Got the staples and stitches out yesterday. What a relief. They said I've lost 22 pounds since I started the liquid diet and had my surgery. Not too bad!
I stopped to Meijer on the way home from my appointment and picked up a few things and was totally exhausted when I got home.

I begged them to let me go back to work. I think they would have liked me to wait another week but I am going stir crazy. I have an office job so I don't have a ton of physical work. I go back with a 5# lifting limit. I'm sure by boss won't have issues with me not moving too fast. I have a great boss.

I now have a list of foods that can be added. I am struggling to get in any amount of liquids and protiens in but have a new plan to try. Maybe I just need to be more disciplined!

I'll update after my next appointment in Dec.

First post surgical posting
on November 1, 2007 6:16 am

Wow. It has been a while since I updated.

I was scheduled for surgery at Hurley on October 24,2007. It was the first surgery of the day so I needed to be there at 5:15 am. From what I hear everything went as scheduled. It took about 3 hours and that I should have been out of recovery in another 2 to 2.5 hours. It was closer to 3 hours before they had me somewhat awake and in a room.

I don’t come out of general anesthetics well so I really don’t remember much about the first two days. On Thursday I got the nose tube pulled what a funky feeling. Friday, I got the catheter pulled since I could seem to walk that day and was actually feeing human. They told me I would be staying till Saturday. My delayed reaction to waking up apparently concerned them. Saturday morning the JP tube went and I was turned loose.

The day I got home was tiring. It’s only an hour away from home but we stopped and had prescriptions filled since I was unsure if anyone would be available over the weekend. By Sunday I was feeling pretty good.

We had decent weather over the weekend right through the 31st so I could do some outside walking. Not running marathons but nice walks.

Struggling to get water and protein based liquids down but find it a little easier every day.

I’ll update after my 2-week appointment. Happy November everyone.

Still not Psycho =)
on August 29, 2007 2:41 pm
Today I went to see Dr Williams again. It had been over a year since my first psych evaluation so I had to do it again.

Everything went well and he said I'm good for surgery. That office is always so busy. My appointment was for 11:45. I saw him for a couple of minutes and was told to go have lunch and come back an hour later. Once I got back it was probably a half hour wait to do the computer portion of the test. Then it flew.

He will fax the results to Hurley today. Yipee!

Back on track
on August 24, 2007 2:19 am
I now have to do my psych exam again. Because of my postponement for a heart cath my last eval was over a year old. I was hoping they could do an adendment but that was not to be. Hopefully I am no more psychotic than I was last time...LOL We'll find out on the 29th of August.

I then have my Pre-op appointment on the 26th of September. When I get back from my Florida vacation I will do my Nutrition class. I get back into town late on the 3rd of October and still have Thursday as a vacation day. The classes are offered on Thursday so I won't have to miss another day of work.

They said something about a 15 day protein diet prior to surgery. I guess I will find out more during my pre-op appointment.

It's back to being real again.
