Surgeon Testimonial

Anthony Petrick, M.D.
The entire Geisinger Bariatric program is top notch! I've had classes, support groups, many visits with providers in GI Nutrition, and one comprehensive visit with the surgeon's staff. Many visits were in local offices so that I did not need to make the trip to Danville. Everyone was very kind and knowledgeable. Risks of surgery were laid out plainly on many occasions, and there was never any pressure to proceed with the surgery.

At the hospital, and surgical team was wonderful. I've been in a few recovery rooms in other hospitals that were cold and terrifying, but this one was warm and comfortable and the staff very attentive. I was in a regular hospital bed that could be tilted up to my liking, and it went with me to my room so that I did not need to change beds. I had visits from 3 physicians each day: a surgical fellow, a surgeon, and a GI Nutrition physician.

The aftercare program is also structured. I was given clear discharge instructions including contacts if I have any problems. A follow-up visit is scheduled, the team will follow me for the rest of my life, and support groups are on-going.

My only complaints are as follows:

I did not see much of Dr. Petrick. I had one office visit, and the next time I saw him was the morning after my surgery. He did not speak to me before my surgery, but I did see the surgical fellow. I guess this is typical in a teaching hospital.

The hospital stay should be longer. I was out on the 3rd day after a miserable night of excruciating bowel pain. The patients who live near the hospital typically leave on the 2nd day. This is probably related to insurance coverage. I did feel worried about coming home so soon, and I am having trouble taking in enough nutrition.

Regarding the gas pain, it was the worst pain of my life, and I have been through several surgeries and gallstones. The nurse tried all night to get me Simethicone which did not show up until morning. The pain meds had done little to ease my pain in the meantime. Why not have Simethicone ordered and at the ready?

I Feel Skinny :)

My BMI says I'm still extremely obese, but I feel skinny - sung to the tune of "I Feel Pretty." I'm also singing Zippidee Doo Dah over my new job!
