The Start of my New Journey.....

Last Nov. My Dr. asked me if I was interested, I didn’t even know Kaiser did this kind of surgery. He had papers about the process sent to me. It took me a long time to make the call for an appointment to the orientation. It was May 10. My next step was to call in to schedule the 12 weekly required classes. (starts Jun 14) At the orientation, they said I would be assigned a surgeon and a nutritionist. They said I would have to loss 10 % weight (30) before they would schedule the surgery. They said the surgeon and I will decide which surgery is best for me. I want to learn what I can of each to help me. I do know it’s not going to be the lap band. At the orientation, it didn’t sound like it was the right one for me.

Hi - congrats on getting started? Where are you doing the Options program? I had to do mine at the Sunset location. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask. OH is a good place to learn about the different options. Even though Kaiser says they do not do the D/S, if you decide that's best for you, there have been several people who won after appealing.

I'm curious about them assigning you a nutritionist. I am about to have surgery and haven't heard anything about a nutritionist on board with the staff ( i sure it's not the people leading the options classes).

Hi, yeah my Options classes will be 5:30pm at Kaiser Sunset. My work is 4 miles away, so not too bad.

At the orientation she mention a nutritionist, so I don't know. What is D/S ? Are you having the sleeve or the RNY ? How long did it take from your last Options class till you were given a date for surgery?

This site looks great. I also joined a couple Yahoo groups too. O' yesterday I watched some YouTube of people that have had the surgery too.

Figure the more I learn about the process, the better I will handle it all.

The d/s is the duodenal switch. It's a restrictive and a malabsorptive surgery. There's a forum on OH.

I finished Options 2/17, and I met with the surgeon 4/7 and was given a surgery date on 5/10.

I am having the sleeve done. Kaiser was useless in helping me decide, so I just had to have the research done. They don't try and push one surgery or another, but they discourage the lap band (for good reasons).

Hey Merry! Get ALL the info you can! I went RNY, but VSG (in my opinion) is better than Band. Kaiser has a GREAT program, don't sweat the 10%, it comes off quick!

Hi Seattle_Maui, I am just ready to start this journey. I was wondering, will they weight me on the 1st class, then from there be required to loss the 10%?
