Surgeon Testimonial

Vishal Mehta M.D.
I met with Dr. Mehta about 2 months ago. I was very impressed with his professionalism. His office staff were very helpful. In fact one of his staff had the Bariatric surgery and is available to discuss any questions you might have.
Dr. Mehta stresses aftercare. He has support groups set up and encourages his patients to attend.
He speaks of the risks of the surgery but he is very confident in his skill and eases your worries.
I personally like a doctor who is competent and also has a good bedside manner. I need someone to "hold my hand" and be reassuring. Kindness and encouragment is very important to me.
I have just finished all the tests needed before the surgery and am waiting for one result. I then can make my appointment for the surgery. I am anxious and yet very excited about my new adventure. For me the surgery isn't the easy way out but the only way out.

I'm back now
on August 8, 2008 7:34 am

It is August 8, 2008.  I have been gone for a long time because of my daughter's illness.  Long story short she entered the hospital in January, came home to my house with her family April 18 and stayed with us til July15.  She is now in her own home with her husband and 2 boys.  She's doing well but still recuperating from the illness.  She has either Guillian Barre or CIDP.  It is a nervous system syndrome in which her antibodies attack the myelin sheath which cause the nerves to die and stop feeding the muscles.  You then become paralyzed and at times unable to breath on your own.  She also had a Trache and a feeding tube inserted.

Anyway, she's on the road to a slow recovery and I thank God everyday for her progress.

I am down to 147 pounds from 325.  I am very happy with my weight loss and I have basically stopped losing.  I variate between 146 and 149.

My husband went to see my surgeon and plans on having the surgery in February.  Things have changed since I had my surgery on Dec 18, 2006.  He now has to go on a diet for 6 months before having the surgery.  I worry about him because he has a problem breathing when he walk and his back kills.  I know from experience that the surgery will definately help him feel better.

It's good to be back.

Kathi

9 month check up
on September 20, 2007 7:11 pm

Well, today I went for my 9 month check with the surgeon.  Today is Sept 20.  The doctor was very pleased with my weight loss.  I have lost 134 pounds so far.  I told him I am feeling good.  I do have my yuck days but on the whole things are great.

Matt and I went into New York City tonight for dinner and met with friends.  I haven't seen them for over a month and they both were shocked at my weight loss.  Shocked in a good way.  My girlfriend kept saying that I was skinnier than her.  In fact, I weight less than her now.  We are not in any way in competition but I guess the sight of me shocked her.   They were both very happy for me.  As I always say, "thank you God for the opportunity you gave me".  It is truly a miracle.

It's been a while
on September 14, 2007 8:13 pm

Sept 14, 2007.  Well, alot has been going on since I last posted.  All good thank God.  I have lost 131 pounds to this point and I am so grateful!  I have gone from a size 28 to a size 16.  I love going clothes shopping now but the transition from Plus size stores to Regular stores is a bit daunting.

My 2 Grandsons are growing like weeds.  They are both in the 95th percentile for weight and height.   Their dad is 6'7" and mom is 5'10" so they're destined to be big!

My son Paul married in June to a beautiful girl.  They are very happy and in the process of buying a house.

My husband and I are also moving.  We sold our house that we lived in for 27 years and are moving to a 55 and older community.  I am trying to get the packing done and it seems to be such a slow process!  I hate to leave my house but it's just too big for us.

I am feeling great with the weight loss and I am so happy that I had the opportunity to have the surgery.  A true miracle from God.

My new Grandson is here
on July 3, 2007 4:38 pm

Today is one of the happiest days of my life.  My second Grandson was born this morning, July 3, 2007.  His name is Aiden Matthew Tighe.  He weighs 9 pounds 11 ounces and is 21 1/2 inches long.  He's a big boy.  He has a tremendous amount of dark brown hair.  My daughter had him by Ceasarian Section this morning.  She's tired but very happy.  Dad is also thrilled but tired.  I thank God for all his blessings.

After the wedding
on July 1, 2007 6:03 am

Today is July 1, 2007.  It is one week since my son Paul got married.  What a wonderful time we had at the wedding.  Nikki and Paul were ecstatic and she looked beautiful.  It was great seeing all my good friends.  Everyone was so complimentary on my weight loss.  My gown was pretty but didn't fit as well as I hoped.  The seamstress had to take it in so much that I guess she couldn't do anymore.  The top of the gown kept falling so you could see my bra.  I tried taping it up which didn't work well so my husband pinned it up.  It was okay but not the best.  Anyway, it was a great day.  After the wedding we went to our friends in Long Island for a weeks vacation.  Our friends from Texas, Missouri and Rhode Island also came for the week.  Their house is on the bay and we had a beautiful week.  Got home yesterday and it's good to be here.  I didn't get on a scale for the week and was terrified when I got home.  Believe it or not I lost 3 pounds.  I am thrilled with the loss.  I didn't cheat at all but they tend to eat every possible chance they get.  The hardest time for me is when they got ice cream.  Matt gave me a taste of his which was extremely sweet to me but it was good.  It was hard watching them all eating their ice cream cones while I drooled.  I was good though.

My new Grandson will be born on July 3, this coming Tuesday so I am anxiously awaited his arrival.  The honeymooners are coming home tonight so I can't wait to see them.  All I can say is life is good and I thank God for all his blessings.

My Story

Hi, my name is Kathi and I live in New Jersey.  I have been overweight for most of my adult life.  I have been on many different diets along with being on many different "diet" pills.  I would lose 20 pounds and then gain 30 back.

I am 55 years old, married and have 2 grown children.  I have a 15 month old Grandson who is the love of my life.  Since he's been born I've noticed my inability to hold him for any length of time because of my back pain.  I also have arthritis in my feet, knees and hips.  All due to being overweight.  I am hypertensive, I have high cholesterol, Acid Reflux and onset Type 2 Diabetes.  All due to the excess weight.

I have been struggling with trying to decide if I should have the Gastric Bypass Surgery.  After much debate within myself I decided that either I would have the surgery or die an early death.  I really can't continue the way I am now.  I am in constant pain and I miss out on so many things.

I finally made an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Mehta, a Bariatric Surgeon in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  He was kind and very reassuring.  At first I told him I wanted to have the Lap Band surgery.  He told me that If I wanted to lose a lot of my excess weight then the Lap Band wouldn't do the trick.  I had too much weight to lose.  I left his office very confused in what my decision would be.  I attended one of his seminars and decided to go with the Gastric Bypass after speaking to others who had it done.

I am in the process of having all the tests done that are needed  in order for me to have the surgery.  I saw a Psychologist and she approved me for the surgery.  I had the blood tests required and they came back fine.  The doctor wanted me to have a stress test for my heart also.  Now the fear set in because I knew I wouldn't be able to walk on the treadmill because of my arthritis.  When I saw the Cardiologist he told me about the Chemical Stress test in which they inject chemicals into the body which would do the same thing as the treadmill.  The stress test came back fine and I also had to have an Echo Cardiogram in which I am waiting for the results.  The technician did tell me that the Cardiogram looked fine but I'd have to wait for the doctor to read it.    That brings me to the present.  As soon as I get the okay from the Cardiologist I will call Dr. Mehta and set up a date for the surgery.  I am anxious but also excited about the whole thing.  I really need to lose this weight so I can feel better and improve my health.  Not to mention being able to wear clothes that are flattering.

In June my son is getting married and I want to be able to enjoy the day and dance with my son.  My daughter is pregnant again and I want to be able to keep up with the Grandkids and to be able to help her out when possible.

I will write again as soon as things start happening.
