Surgeon Testimonial

Wade Barker, M.D.
My Dr answered all my questions. I had a lot since I am needing a revision, RE: stapling in 87. He was kind and honest. The staff was awsome. My husband and I are both having surgery and they are letting us do it all together.

Sherry and John, it was such a pleasure meeting you both. I am praying for you both this morning as you enter into a new phase of your lives. You have researched so much and are so determined that I know you both will do great.

My name is Sherry. I started my first diet at the age of 10. I have been on a diet since. I had stomach stapling in 1987. Lost 80# and gained back 10#/year since. Lost on WW, Adkins, South Beach and many different diet pills. My labs have been good until the last year. Now my cholesterol and blood pressure are creeping up. Not to mention everytime I lost weather it was 10lbs or 60lbs, I always gained extra back with it. Now I am having a  RNY revision and my husband is having RNY. We are doing it together. We did well doing WW together, So I hope all goes well w/surgery and we do this good together. Wish me luck.

1 yr ago Yesterday
on July 28, 2008 9:23 am
1 year ago today John and I came home from hospital less than 24 hrs after surgery. And have we had some changes. I can not think of a bad change, only good. In the last yr. John has gone from Highest weight of 341 to his GOAL WEIGHT of 185.A total loss of 156 lbs so far.  Yes he did get on the scale for me yesterday, WOOOHOOOO. He has lost more than 100 inches. Gone from a size 52 pants and 4X shirt, to a size 30-32 pants and medium shirt. He has gone from over 100 units of insulin/ a day, blood pressure  medicine and multiple pain pills to vitamins, iron, b12, calcium and omeprazole a day.  He has also lost a gallbladder. He has gained some confidence and wants to change jobs for a while. He (if everything checks out) will be going to Afghanistan in Aug. First to Houston on the 17th for 10-12 days, then deploy for 4month intervals and home 2 weeks. Right now he is at the ER at the V A in Dallas, so they can find out why he gets do short of breath, I will let you know  when I hear from him.

Now for me. I have gone from Highest weight of 345 lbs to NOW 194 lbs, a LOSS of 151 lbs. I have gone from a size 4X scrub and 26-28 pants, to a size 12 and 14 pant and medium and lg tops. I have lost more than 100 inches. The PCP was threatening to put me on BP meds and Cholesterol meds if my numbers did not go down. Well I am not on anything now but Vitamins, iron, B12, Calcium and Vitamin C.   I have changed jobs, went from the VA back to homecare and working on my RN. If john goes over seas, I am moving to Virginia and work out there a while. I love to travel and move around. John thinks the kids will rely on each other more if I am not here.  Of coarse Susan (cheerleader) just thinks it is wonderful. It is less than 25miles from her. I FEEL FANTAASTIC.
Together we have found SO MANY WONDERFUL Loving friends, that we would not  trade for anything in the WORLD!!!! We found we really LIKE each other and since we have energy we do so much more together and are so much busier.  We have found that for the FIRST time in 24 yrs that we have a FANTASTIC S%% LIFE. (Do not tell him I told,LOL), I am going to miss him so much, But I have had to myself most of the last 7yrs, because he worked at the RV parks we lived at. But he wants this real BAD. So I told him I would back him up.
I truly love you all vey much. I am so sorry this is so long.
Love, Hugs and Prayers to all.
Sherry and John

6 Months today. January 27, 2008
on January 26, 2008 11:26 pm
Well it has been 6 months since my life has changed. Lots of changes and then again not so many changes. I have lost 112 lbs and 69 inches in 6 months. It seems a life time, then again it seems as if it has been a minute. My eating has not changed a whole lot since surgery, a little more at times, but still no appetite. I still do not always get my protein and water, But I get more than I did 3months ago. This board has been a lifeline and I do not know how anyone could have this surgery and survive w/o it. The people, the dinners, the breakfast, all of it are what has saved me and helped along this way, Of coarse w/John having surgery the same day as I, has helped a lot also. He has not weighed since Dec4 and not measured since 3months, but he is LOOKING GOOD! LOL.
I love the people I have met on this board and they are so special to me. If anyone reading this is pre-op or new post-op and do not have a support group, I beg you to read the boards and ask questions and attend support meetings, they will help you along.
Love and hugs to all.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!
Well it has been a road. I do not know what is worse, head hunger or forgeting to eat at all. John and I seem to go both ways frequently.  We are both doing OK. I have 2 lbs to reach the century card, and I imagine John has about 4-8lbs, but you know he will not weigh unless I plead or beg or pay him, LOL.
I am ready for Christmas. @more things to buy and Christmas cards to mail, But other than that, I am ready.
Kids are ok at this time.  Pray they stay that way.  The TMB is such a great place. The people on this site are a Godsend.  I thank God everyday for showing me the way here.
Merry Christmas and May God give you Many Blessings this season and all year.
LOVE AND HUGS,
John and Sherry

15 weeks Post op. 3 Month follow up
on November 14, 2007 7:17 am
Hello All,
We had our 3month post op visit w/ Dr Barker yesterday. He said everything looked great. We have to add our iron and Calcium in our vitamins. John has gone from 334 lbs to 257lbs (yea- he did not believe it) that is down 78lbs, I have went from 345 lbs to 263lbs, that is down 82 lbs. Together John and I have lost 160lbs. WOW.
This board is the most AWESOME place I could have found. Even though John does not get on and read, he asked everyday how everyone is and who he needs to pray for.
I really do not have any problems compared to so many on this board and it is humbling to remind myself of that. I am so grateful for my healthy kids and grandkids. Healthy mom and stepdad.
I posted Johns measurements on here. No he does not know, but I bet he figures it out.
Love and Prayers to all,
Sherry (and John)

on October 19, 2007 11:14 pm
Hello to all,
I am 12 weeks post op today. Down @277 from 345 a total of 68lbs. More energy than before. I still do not get enough to eat, drink or protein. I am still working on it.  I found someone to work both of my shifts Sat 10/20 so John and I could attend the OH dinner and go Dancing. But John's mom has been having problems w/her potassium and gout. She is 82yrs old and lives alone, so as bad as I want ot be at the dinner, I know and feel like we need to go see her more. But it sure makes me sad.
Everything with John is good, He cont to work out almost daily, drinking water, eating protein,etc..... Last weight 2weeks ago, 278lbs.
I hope everyone has a blessed weekend,
Love and hugs,
Sherry

Oct 6,2007-10weeks post op
on October 6, 2007 2:23 am
Boy is it fun to be able to wear clothes I have not worn in several years. I have 20more lbs till I weigh what I did when going to WW before I started gaining again. Several people gave me some 2x scrubs a couple of weeks ago and I did not quiet fit into them, Then this week I accidently pulled a pair down and as I put them on I thought I had gained inches and the 3x's were tight again, but NO, they were 2 X and I have been wearing 2X since. Now I have a big choice in clothes, too cool. I am now morbid obese instead of SUPER MORBID OBESE, WOOOOOHOOOOO.
I weigh 283 today that is minus 62lbs from highest and 55 from surgery. John does not weigh but I put before and after pics on photos. He has gone from a tight 50 or 3X pants/sweats to a loose 42 or lg pants/sweats, and a 4x shirt to a lg and 1x shirt. He is looking good.
Found out Friday that the new grandbaby in March is more than likely another girl, That is ok. Mom and baby are healthy.
No I am still not getting enough protein or liquids, but working on it. I still do not excercise much if at all. Food still does not taste good and am still not hungry. Occasionally thirsty but not often. I eat a lot of cheese and drink a lot of milk. John does his protein shakes faithfully and walks the pool for at least an hr a day.
Good luck to all that reads.
God bless, hugs and love,
Sherry

Sept 23, 2007 8wks post op
on September 22, 2007 11:35 pm
I have not added anything here in a while. I weighed just now and am down to 291. John still will not weigh, in the Dr office almost 3weeks ago he wighed 289 and I have lost 11lbs since then, so I bet he has, too. Back at work Tues night through Sat night. Midnight to 8:00. I hate this drive to Dallas every night and the gas is eating me up. Boss has given me a couple of doubles over the next few weeks to let me come to work 4 days instead of 5. The doubles are long but I get to only drive 4 times.
Not much else going on. My son who lives in Plainview is closing on his new house on Oct 1. Both of my daughters working hard to keep their relationships going w/ S O.  I am ready to win the lottery, so if anyone can pass me winning numbers, I am all for it.
God Bless all who reads this.
Love and Hugs,
Sherry

6 weeks post-op
on September 6, 2007 6:48 am
Well it has been 6wks since I took off work for surgery. It has been a ride. I have lost 42# and John has lost 41#, But he also started out 10# smaller than me. We go to te surgeon today and get released for work. I do anyway, he went back to work 2weeks post op. He lives on Wendy's chili, I can not eat much of anything. I am still having a hard time drinking, but it is mostly because I can only take small sips and then I forget. My PCP put me on antibiotics yesterday for an abcess and told me to go to a dentist, but My mouth work was done in Mexico and I want to lose more weight before we do adjustments,
We found the lunchables with turkey and cheese are a great meal, John has 4 crackers w/turkey and cheese and I have 4. Also the hormel singles, you know beef stew, chicken and dressing, etc....we split those for a meal.
We went on a vacation to Ohio, Va, and the east coast and the gulf coast. 3500miles. took youngest DD and Elizabeth(grand girl). Had a ball. It was noce just not to be here.
I go back to work tonght, I do not want to go. They have an opening in the FW clinic, I am going to apply for. You have to apply a dozen times before they look at you, but I am going to pray and apply anyway.
Love to all that reads.

8-13-07 17days post op
on August 13, 2007 10:40 am
I am doing good, waiting for my energy level to get better. The pain in my L side is gone, I spent 3 days in the pool w/grand babies and I think that helped. All incisions are healed on John and I. John has had most all his sweats (work clothes) out grow him. He will not weigh. But he does everything right, Unlike me. He walks, walks and sips and sips, Eats the right things,  I am so sick of chocolate protein shakes and he drinks his.
I did discover the profect bullits. The ones we got have 42grams of protein and the taste sucks. But I tell myself I can do anything for 3oz. I gag for 30min after. But I drink them. Why can't they have protein in capsules or something that is tolerable. I get to full drinking 8 oz of anything. I weighed at Tom and Ques while helping out and I have lost 22lbs since surgery and 29 since highest weight 3 weeks before surgery. OOOORAAAAAA.
Tom has the nicest personality. He was so happy Que went on her trip. I know all the pics will prove he was right in sending her. You people are so beautiful and the laughs and fun just make you all prettier and happier.
I am going to buy a scale today.
Love to all that reads.

12 Days Post-op
on August 8, 2007 7:25 am
Well, John and I have been in Amarillo since Sunday. I have not been on
the TMB or read the OH messages or anything, I feel so out of touch.
John
is doing great, No complaints, no food problems, walking, sipping,
taking protein, HE makes me sick, lol. Sweaty .

I am still with little aches and pains, can't stand most protein, vit are too sweet, yada, yada, yada. The hematoma is going down, which is a good thing, I am getting around fine, I rub my side a lot, hold it in, something
like that. I miss my NSAIDS, they work so good for pain that tylenol will
not touch. I want this to work so bad. I know I get my TUDE in the right place.
And I am working on being more positive for me. I love OH and those who
post here and are encouraging me. I would be real lost w/o everyone. So today I pick my tude and I go with it. I will have a good attitude. I will walk, I will eat my too sweet vitamins, I will drink my nasty(good) protein shake.
And I always praise God and  give  Him all the Glory. And I will buy me a scale when I go to a store.

I am tired of hurting, aching whatever you call it.A little discouraged maybe. I had to call the Dr at 1am Wed and meet him that day where he was doing surger. I was having a pain that was weird inside my left side at the bellybutton, hard and warm. He sent me for a ct scan and it is a hematoma that will eventually dissolve. There are no leaks, tears or annything else, All is openand running smooth. Oh and I have a little pneumonia in the left lower lung. So we go for our stitches out yesterday and all incisions, johns and mine look great, john lost 19lbs and I GAINED 2. I guess I am really whiney right now. Is that ok. John was given the ok to swim, but I have to wait until the hematoma or whatever goes down and the steri strips come off before I can go and I am ready. This hard place on my stomach makes me look 12months pregnant, I can wear some of the clothes I wore preop.
I am through griping now. I love ya'll and I love this board and the people on it.

Nausea only once since surgery and pain relieved by liquid vicodin.  We have been drinking water, broth and muscle milk and protein drink. I am proud of us.

Eve before Surgery
on July 26, 2007 9:00 pm
Tonight I sit here at this computer that I have been avoiding for some reason this week. Tomorow John and I join all the other wonderful people on the losers bench.  I am not worried, I am ok. I think. I do not like giving up control of the care John gets. You know things like, is he deep breathing, are they watching his blood sugar, is he breathing in his incitive spirometer, etc......I can not take care of him and be the one being taken care of.
I guess what bothers me more than anything, I had my stomach stapled in 1987, I weighed 277#. I worked hard, ate baby food and walked. I lost down to about 199# in 7-8months, Then no more and after 7-8 yrs I was back to 280. Weight watchers in 2003 brought it to 255 in 1 yr and then those 60# came back and BROUGHT FRIENDS. They say you lose slower w/a revision because your body had been through the dramatic calorie loss once already. Well my biggest fear, what if I fail again. What if I never get to goal, or wear a 10 size or hell even a 14-16. What if I do this again and fail again. I know I have a support system this time that can not be beat, OH has been a godsend, I know there are nutrition things that are known today that were not even thought of 20yrs ago. But that is my fear. John L in Fresno wrote a pryer for Paula having surgery tomorow also, I also claimed that prayer as my own, I believe in the power of prayer and I will not go into this tomorow w/o praying.
I think I will check the boards and go to bed, We have to be at the hospital at 10:00 in the am. We are the last 2 of the day, with me being last. My prayers to all that read this.
Thanks and love,
Sherry

ok, Now about work, Chief (debra) calls me in her office yesterday and says we need to fianlize papers on leave request, I go in and she says that she has decided to deny my request for sick leave, donor leave etc,,,, she says my time and leave were not good enough this year in her opinion. She said she took it to Director and the Director asked how was my job performance and Debra told her my performance was above and beyond. Director said she was over riding Debra's decision and approving both sick leave and donor use leave. Debra told me to thank Director because if she (debra) had her way, I would not get leave. So I am ever so grateful for Chain of commands, and very grateful to Director. Thanks ya'll for the prayers.

My Story

I found this wonderful website last year when I lived in Amarillo.I did not even realize they did lap RNY's. I loved reading all the blogs and information everyone has posted. I recently came back to this site after finding out my mother had a lap RNY on Oct 19,2006, of course she did not tell anyone that did not live in Ca until after it was over. My mama is 64 and did not want me to have my stapling in 1987 and I think was afraid to let anyone know she had this done until everything was ok.

Mama said the Dr's told her she would live out retirement on medication unless her weight came off. She was on medication for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholestrerol. She day of her lap RNY, she was told NO MORE PILLS, except viamins. She could not even take her 800mg of motrin 3times a day for her knees, both knees had been operated on. As of 2 days from now (April 19) she will be 6months out and her blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol are all normal, and she has not had a pill other than vitamins or occasional Excedrin since surgery. And she has lost 85LBS!

I weigh 80# more now than mama did when she started. I am 45yrs old, my knees hurt a lot, I can not do anything in comfort. I can not ride in other peoples cars if they did not have extentions on their seatbelts. My BP and cholesterol are creeping up. No meds needed, YET!

My husband has been big most of his life except when he was in the USMC from 1975-1980. He has done most of the diets with me and lost weight as I have, only to put it back on again also. He is a diabetic, now on insulin and glyburide. BP meds because diabetes has messed w/his kidneys. On pain meds and muscle relaxers everyday for back and knee pain.

My husband John and I have 10grandbabies between us. My 4 kids have 6 (3girls and 3 boys), his daughter has 4,(3girls and 1 boy). They range in age from almost 12years to 2 months. They are loving and very active. We decided in January this year that we wanted to check on this surgery. John was only interested in the lap band, and I did not know what was needed for a revision. We made an appt w/Dr Barker in Dallas. We cancelled it twice, mostly out of fear (we would not admit that though,LOL).

We met w/Dr Barker March 29th for a consult. He was very nice and informative. He was in no wat condescending. He said he did not have a problem w/John's lapband, but he felt like he was a better candidate for Lap RNY because of his co-morbidities. He said he felt like John would come off all medication after weight loss. He also said he was one of 3 surgeons on Dall-Ft Worth are that did Lap RNY revisions (now I got excited). He explained away my fears by telling me he stays away from old suture line and just makes new pouches. So we started the ball rolling.

Now telling my kids was a different matter. Yolanda, my youngest daughter (25yrs old) was made our emergency contact. She lost her mother-in-law to an Open RNY in 2003 after many complications and 6 very painful weeks and 3 fixer surgeries.  She is open to this and very understanding. She is also the mother of our 9th grandbaby (the one in the backgroung page) and our biggest supporter. Angela, my oldest daughter s not to happy, she says this is too big to do and since it means lifestyle changes, then we should be able to change our lifestyle w/o surgery and make it work. I listen and nod, and understand where she is coming from, but am going on. My boys Steven and Julian have not really asked and so far we have not said much.

 So here we GO!!!
