Surgeon Testimonial

David Suh, M.D.
Dr. Suh performed my RNY gastric bypass in April 2008. I am almost 4 years post op. Would I do it again? Yes, only with Dr. Suh as my surgeon! I have gone from 242 preop and am easily maintaining 140 by keeping up with high protein daily. Zero complications and zero regrets.

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I have been heavy all of my life. Both my mother, my aunt and grandmother battled their weight. I see signs of obesity in my 10 year old daughter. WLS has changed my life and I hope to prevent my daughter from needing WLS to control her eating habits and maintain her health.

Protein, Protein, Protein
on June 27, 2008 10:32 pm
I am 10 weeks out. I  hit a stall really early at 3 weeks and again at 6 weeks. Check my blog. In the last week I have increased my protein to 100 grams and even with my period the weight in now  literally falling off!  Pants that were tight 2 weeks ago I cant keep up!  Down 8 pounds in 9 days since I increased the protein. Last month during my period it stalled the entire week so 8 pounds lost the week of my period is hugh!!!  Wish I had known to up my protein 10 weeks ago!

100 grams of protein -- Its like having a part time job!
on June 23, 2008 8:30 pm
Its a good thing teaching summer school is only a part time job because my task to increase my protein to 100 grams a day is like having a part time job.  But it  "pays" better!  Who would have thunk? I have to think about it constantly.  When at home I look at my white board with my daily protein count and think about my next meal/drink. (No I am not food obsessed just more aware of what I am eatting.)  Down 4 lbs since I increased my protein 3 days ago!  Got 90 grams day 1, 138 grams day two and 125 on day 3.  Drinking protein drinks 3-4 times a day has paid off!  So much for stalls. Going to stick with it for a few more days. Goal is to be in Onderland by July 4th.  Down to a size 16!  Whoo  Hoooo!

Increasing the protein
on June 21, 2008 6:59 pm

RNY on 4/16 and losing slowly. Never hungry, no cravings, no complications, taking my vitamins and labs are good, no food issue or intorances, havent vomited once, and don't want to know if  I dump. Sooo scared to vomit, get stuck, or dump!  I HAVE been taking sips with food because I am scared of food getting stuck.  Others with my BMI and same surgery dates are down 50+ pounds compared to my 32 since surgery (I dont count the  19 lbs lost preop).  I KNOW its because I am not getting enough protein or food. I am lucky if I get 30 grams of protein a day and surgeon wants 60 grams. I am not cheating!!!!  I have been swimming and exercising in the pool everyday. I need to try something different. Vowed yesterday not to drink  or sip with meals. So far so good. I recently read in several blogs that those who lose slowly should try to up protein to 90-100 grams because your body thinks its in shock and thinks its starving and holds on to everything. Makes since to me.  But if I can barely get 30-40 grams its going to be tough to get more. Yesterday I vowed to drink 4  protein drinks @ 23 grams each. Did it but had the bloated feeling all day due to so much fluid intake.   I just finished my 3rd one about 5 minutes ago and will force myself to do another before bed. Can increasing my protein to 90-100 grams help?

Notes from Bariatric Surgery conference
on June 21, 2008 2:27 pm

I read on one of the boards about a ASMBS conference for baratric surgeons. Thought it would be interesting to google ASMBS and see if I could find info on WLS. Found a link with LOTS of info from the 2007 and 2006 conferences that was given to the surgeons. Great info with the results of hundreds of studies of  all types of  WLS!  Warning... its long, filled with medical mumbo jumbo and will take a bit of time to read but it was well worth my time to read it.   You will need a PDF reader installed (Adobe has a free one to download and install before going to the site if you dont have it installed already).

Insurance Billing Issues
on June 20, 2008 7:19 pm
I have Blue Shield HMO and had a preapproval and authorization  number with $0 copay  prior to surgery. Surgery went well with no complications. Imagine my surprise when a bill comes saying I was in ICU/CCU intensive care/critical care unit. There was also a note in very small print  on my benefits summary saying my surgery was not a covered benefit. Interesting as  I had preapproval and an authorization number and my surgeon would not schedule without these.  Called Blue Shield and "they missed the authorization and would reprocess. I was told they would look into the ICU?CCU charges"  Now I know I wasnt in ICU/CCU  because I was walking 4 hours post op and walked PASSED this unit all night long both nights of my stay.  Panicked about unknown complications I might have had I spoke to the insurance clerk for the surgeon who verified info from my chart and the hospital and  said I absolutely was not in ICU/CCU and notes in the chart indicated that my surgery was quicker than most due to my smaller liver.  The next day at my 1 month postop visit, the surgeon said he specifically remembered my surgery because he called me in early so he could make an earlier flight somewhere.  Called Blue Shield again and asked them to investigate the "incorrect" or overbilling as I was not in ICU/CCU.  The person literally said, "Its all being paid by Blue Shield, dont worry about it."  I made a comment about the hospital overbilling or the possibility of a billing/coding error and got the same response again!  No wonder our healthcare costs are sky high!
