Surgeon Testimonial

David Suh, M.D.
Dr. Suh performed my RNY gastric bypass in April 2008. I am almost 4 years post op. Would I do it again? Yes, only with Dr. Suh as my surgeon! I have gone from 242 preop and am easily maintaining 140 by keeping up with high protein daily. Zero complications and zero regrets.

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I have been heavy all of my life. Both my mother, my aunt and grandmother battled their weight. I see signs of obesity in my 10 year old daughter. WLS has changed my life and I hope to prevent my daughter from needing WLS to control her eating habits and maintain her health.

Big day. Visit with Dr. Suh
on April 30, 2009 5:36 pm

Had my one year visit with Dr. Suh.  I can't believe its been a year.  I weighed in at 133.  (Of course his office has signs all over that if you had the "flu" or were feeling ill not to enter his office. No shit! Especially since the Swing Flu outbreak closed the high school for a week which is just  a few blocks away from his office.  Dr. Suh went over my labs and my Vitamin D was low. It was 16.7 and anything under 30 is low.  Wierd as I get plenty of sun exposure (4 hours on Saturdays and 2 hours during weekly practice) and my calcium has Vit D as well as my multivitamins.  Dr. Suh said to add Vitamin D3 to my supplements. Easy enough.  (Ordered some 50000 IU mega Vitamin D3 and more calcium citrate from Vitalady. )Asked about the two days I had low blood sugar and he said it was probably a high blood sugar that crashed too low after too many carbs.  Once was after I had a quesadilla then a Starbucks which probably was mixed wrong so that probably true. But the other time I am guessing was due to taking some cough cold medicine.  He said my glucose levels didn't indicated that everything was fine. Whoo Hoo!  Dr. Suh was happy with my weight and said congratulations on becoming a WLS graduate!!  He reviewed my weight loss to date.  I am at 133. Dr. Suh said that he expected me to lose 5 more pounds in the next 6 months (from where I am not quite sure) and then it will bounce back to where I am now at 133.  He expects me to level out between 132-134.  Told me there would be a big reunion in August. Details will be released at our support group meetings.

Planning to have a 1/2 shot of Apple Corn tonight. (Edited later: DIDNT DRINK!)  A good friend of mine just found out her 18 year old daughter has been having s.. and is on birth control.  My friend has been in denial when others have gently hinted that her daughter might be having sex.  Now she is pissed at her friends because others knew.  The daughter made some poor  choices in the past (dropping grades and lying about it) and getting on birth control was probably one of the most responsible decisions she has made.  Being the daughter is Type 1 diabetic and her doctor has told her that getting pregnant would kill her kidneys.  She absolutely can not get pregnant!  Daughter is 18 and adult and if she is going to be having sex at least she is doing it responsibly.  I hope my daughter can confide in other responsible adults if and when she starts having sex if she is not comfortable talking to me.  Same for my son.  So friend and I are getting together tonight to air things out.  She is disappointed that I didnt tell her.  It was not for lack of trying. Mom was in denial.  Thinking we will have a shot before our chat  which will smooth things over a bit. It will only be my third drink in a year as I am not a drinker.

Syntrax Nectar Strawberry Mousse = Nestle Strawberry...
on April 25, 2009 6:03 pm
Just had to share my new discovery. I love the Syntrax Nectar proteins and mix my favorite flavors (Tea, Fuzzy Navel, Twisted Cherry, Lemonaide)  with water .  I just tried their Strawberry Mousse flavor (guessing its new as I havent seen it online before) but instead of mixing it with water I mixed it with milk, stirred with a SPOON, and added ice.  OH MY GOD!!! It tastes just like Nestle Strawberry milk.  Even my kids didnt know the difference.

Definitely will be reordering this one again.  I got it from advantagesupplements.com

What to tell your boss and co workers about WLS
on April 21, 2009 3:41 pm
Someone here on OH asked whether they should tell their employer about having WLS.  I have been very open and honest about my WLS from the planning stages. Now a year out, I am at my goal of 132 which I have been maintaining since I was 8 months out. I have no plans to hit the surgeons goal of 120 as I think its too thin.  I feel fantastic at 132 and my labs are great. Tons of energy!!!    But now I am sooo tired of the "your too thin comments" from my still obese friends at work. But, I am now telling people I weight 142 so they will shut the blank up.  I have decided to limit certain things now like my exact weight, what foods bother me and their effects just don't need to be public knowledge.  Sometimes it just openning a can of  "let me give you my non WLS opinion" for those who really just dont understand.  Those who are truly interested I will tell them whatever they want to know.  But I really never imagined having to "over estimate" my weight when I "under estimated" it for 20 years!

Low Blood Sugar
on April 21, 2009 8:21 am
Had my first serious "Oh Shit" experience last night at our support group meeting of all places and we were talking about diabetes and blood sugars of all things.  We meet in a conference room at a hotel and it was really hot in there.  Half way through the meeting I got up and sat next to the air conditioner. Started thinking "Wow! I am actually sweating in here."  Now, mind you its been 100 degrees here in the desert the last three days so I figured it was just hot.  Then I got a text message that my son wasnt feeling well so I decided to leave. As I was walking out to the car I realized I was full on shaking.     I started thinking that others who get "the shakes" usually have low blood sugar and need to eat.  It was 7:45. Got to thinking about the whole blood sugar thing. I had just had a chicken quesadilla at 5:00 and a Starbucks at 6:30 (at our meeting before the meeting) so knew it wasnt from not eatting. I have never had "the shakes" but assumed my blood sugar had crashed. Really scarry!!!   Drove across the street to Bakers and got a kids cheeseburger thinking the protein and carbs would up my blood sugar if it was low.  If it was high then I would be screwed as it probably would go higher but had to do something.  It was a 50/50 shot.   I had to put the car in park in the drive thru.  I was so scared my foot would come of the brake!  Pulled to the side and ate it. Waited about 10 minutes till I felt a bit better and drove the half hour home. Talked to hubby on the way in case I felt like I would black out he could call for help. Made it home safe and had the diabetic neighbor check my blood sugar. It was 109. Which I assumed is fairly normal. Wonder how low  it had gotten before I ate that cheeseburger? I can't imagine it was that low since I had just ate at 5:00 and had the Starbucks at 6:30.   I think I had low blood sugar two days in a row in the morning about two months ago but I made sure I was eatting before I went to bed and have had no problems until last night. Plan to do some reasearch on low blood sugar today and am going to schedule an appointment with my PCP to see about getting a meter.

Need to find out what a normal blood sugar range is. Never have been diabetic. Also need to know whats a good way to correct (what to eat) when sugar is low. What tests should I have my PCP run?  I am assuming I cant do the standard 5 hour glucose test?

Added in June after reading a post on low blood sugar

One Year Today. Happy Surgiversary for me!!
on April 16, 2009 8:37 am
Oh my god!  I sooo can't beleive its been a year today.  Its been the best year of my life!  I lost 100 pounds in 8 months.  I started at 242 and am maintaining 132 for a total of 110 pounds lost.    I am down from a size 22-24 to a size 2! Yes a 2 like as in 02.  I never in a million years would have thought I would ever see this day.  I am not going to post about the obvious Wow moments like being able to tie my shoes easily or  being able to sit in a stadium seat or being able to cross my legs. We read about that all the time on OH.  Some of my great moments was discovering that I can cross my legs under my desk or a restaurant table, taking a bath and having the water go around me and over me, being able to wear my 11 year old daughters clothes or being as small as my mother!

Its no secret that I dont exercise.  Yes, I walk quite a bit at work but thats really it.  Still just as lazy about exercise as I was before.  Need to work on that. Can't wait till the pool is warm!

I have NEVER vomited!!! That right. Not even once in the last year!!   Whooo Hooo!  That was my biggest fear. Who wants to puke.  Not me!  I do chew like crazy before I swallow.  I don't  dump but will get loose stools if I eat too much sugar or fat so that's a good thing.  I don't get constipated and if I even I might be to the point where I need to poo and haven't all I have to do is drink some 100% juice and things are moving right along.

My best advice to anyone is to find a protein drink they like that mixes with WATER and get upwards of 100 grams of protein a day even if it means 2-3 protein drinks a day and 3 meals.   I love my Syntrax Nectar and sip them all day long in between my meals. I truly believe the increased protein its what me me such a success.  I was such a slow loser until I upped my protein and then the weight literally started falling off.  Find a protein you love and just do it!!!

Going to have to call Lynette, my surgery buddy (same surgeon, same day, same starting BMI) and see how she is doing today.

Will blog more when I get a chance later today.
