Surgeon Testimonial

David Suh, M.D.
Dr. Suh performed my RNY gastric bypass in April 2008. I am almost 4 years post op. Would I do it again? Yes, only with Dr. Suh as my surgeon! I have gone from 242 preop and am easily maintaining 140 by keeping up with high protein daily. Zero complications and zero regrets.

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I have been heavy all of my life. Both my mother, my aunt and grandmother battled their weight. I see signs of obesity in my 10 year old daughter. WLS has changed my life and I hope to prevent my daughter from needing WLS to control her eating habits and maintain her health.

Confessional!
on June 26, 2009 5:08 pm
3 PM Need a confessional and didn’t have Internet access “in range” in our camping spot so I am using Word and will post to OH later when I walk down “into the range” of the campground WIFI. Its 3 PM and I took the kids to the ice cream window. I ate a full size regular chocolate ice cream scoop (minus the cone). I KNEW what I was doing. As I was eating I did the old justification of the “I walked a ton this morning around the campground” and “I rode bikes with the kids” and “I swam in the pool” so its OK. Yeah right. Not ok. Did I tell you how wonderful it tasted. Not ok. Now I am sitting here waiting and wondering if it will make me gassy and give me the runs (I don’t truly dump, just get mild cramps and the runs). Wondering if I will get the carb coma I hear others talk about. Thoughts are flying through my head like how am I going to balance out all those carbs.   3:20 PM Decided to chase it with a 23g protein  0 carb drink made with water HOPING the protein will mix with the carbs so I wont get diarrhea. OMG, I sound like an alcoholic thinking chasing it with water will dilute it.   It just occurred to me that my blood sugar will probably spike and then crash like I had that happen  about two months ago. Guilt, Guilt, Guilt!! So much worse that as of right now I feel perfectly fine. A ton of thoughts are going through my head. Almost want it to make me really sick and miserable because if I can eat one regular ice cream today will it lead to me having another one tomorrow? No. No. No. Thinking about going for a walk to burn some of it off but what if I get to the other side of the campground and get miserably sick or blood sugar crashes and I can’t get back. This sucks!   Went and sat on the toilet to pee and wait. Sat for about 20 minutes. Nothing. Started making dinner. Nothing. 4:25 PM Perfectly fine. Thrilled I didn’t get sick but scarry I didn’t dump like a dump truck.
5:10 PM Still perfectly fine. Promise no ice cream tomorrow!
Tomorrow's here! No ice cream for me!!  Too scarry to risk.

Was described as "Chunky" and am now "Boney"
on June 24, 2009 1:56 pm
Heck yeah!!!  One of my current adult students mentioned one of my former adult students who I haven't seen since before I had surgery.  Anyway, the new student was describing me to her friend to make sure they were talking about the same teacher (me). The former student described me in the conversation as "chunky" and the new student said "no, she is really boney and must be a different person."  Today when the new student told me the story and asked if I was ever chunky I had to laugh then showed her my pics on my OH page. She couldn't believe that was me a year ago.  The former student is going to come see me at work tomorrow. Can't wait to see her!  Bet she walks right past me!

On a more serious note. Last week I cut back on my protein drinks to one a day instead of three. Did it for a week.  Needed to stretch what protein  powder I had left until finances would allow me to order more and wanted to see how "necessary" three protein drinks a day was for me.  Cravings were crazy and it wasnt that time of the month.  I gained 5 pounds last week and felt like crap. I was weak and tired. No illness to blame. 5 pounds is huge!  Scared the crap out of me.  Spent way too much time thinking about the "bounce back" we all hear about. When I was fat 5 pounds was nothing.  Now, 5 pounds is a flipping clothes size. I ordered more Lemon Tea Nectar protein immediately!!!  Went back to the three protein drinks plus three meals and dropped four of the five pounds this week. Carb cravings gone, gone, gone!  Energy is back too. Got to love my RNY!

Butt gone. Boobs gone. Find myself playing with my collarbone and my ribs and sternum (sp?). Even noticed I now have shin bones!

Just saw this post with lots of tips for maintaining. Had to add it to my blog! http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/rny/3964051/RNYers-that-are-Maintaining-CHECK-IN/

Aetna coverage for gastric bypass
on June 15, 2009 9:56 am
Doing some research for my sister in law who was told her Aetna plan did not cover WLS. Found these sites http://www.aetna.com/cpb/medical/data/100_199/0157.html

Anyone have Aetna cover their WLS?
