Surgeon Testimonial

Stanley Rogers M.D.
My first impression of Dr. Rogers was that he was so easy going, had a wonderful personality and took time to answer every question my husband and I had. He explained the benefits and risks of the surgery and complimented me on my research and readiness. In fact since I had planned to have surgery at John Muir which wasn't approved by insurance, I came to him with all my tests completed. He was thrilled and said I was the 1st one ever to come prepared to go and he said let's schedule surgery. My impression has not changed since surgery.

Esther his Assistant is very nice and responds timely.

Karen at the front desk is a little regimental but when I reached out to her in a friendly way she has come through like a dream when it comes to scheduling.

I had questions and got called back quickly by a nurse practioner and told them I would like to see more of a schedule in the post-op program. I was told that they are re-doing it.

I would recommend Dr. Rogers to anyone, he is an excellent surgeon who understands people.... he plays clarinet too!

January 8, 2009... The Big Day
posted on 1/13/09 9:36 am
Well the big day came and I didn't sleep well the night before, but catnaped while my husband slept well.  I guess that's a good thing as I was going to pretty much be sleeping all day and he wasn't!  So up at 4:00 a.m. and took my hibiclens shower, man I used every drop... not a germ anywhere!  The drive over to San Francisco was easy breezy, thank goodness because it's usually ugly across the Bay Bridge.

We get to the hospital, and sign in with the nicest Irish lady who was so darn cute.  There is one other couple in the room and of course we instantly begin chatting.  Mary and Tony from Brentwood, wow another East Bay couple and what would you know, she was having RNY and Dr. Rogers is her surgeon!  I thought geez I hope they didn't double book our surgeon LOL but she actually was the surgery after mine.

So upstairs we go to the pre-op area, and change clothes and get on the gurney (nerves made me use the restroom at least 2 or 3 times).  Anjanu one of my anesthesiologists came by and we hit it off right away and then comes his boss Dr. Pardo the Sr. member of the team and a real nice doc.  I asked him if we were going to be on a first name basis and he said sure, so his name was Manuel, too cute.  Dr. Rogers shows up and says were going to be on time, so I will see you in a couple of minutes in the OR.  So Anjanu and Manuel get us rolling down the hall and Manual looks over to me and says, you can call me Manny!  LOL, I felt and knew I was in good hands.  I put in my iPod buds and Bette Midler started singing, I think it was, This Ole' House and I hear Manny say, Barb give me some nice deep breaths....

I woke up and Andrea Bocelli was playing on the iPod, Con Te Partiro (my favorite and 1st on the tunes alphabetically!)  I was cold and said so and on came the nice warm blankets and then felt a little nausea and within seconds they had given me something and that eased.  My mouth and throat were dry so I asked for some ice chips and they had even allowed me a few of those and I felt SO much better.  We were in recovery waiting for a room to be cleaned and that I was getting a private room is what I remember someone told me.  The next thing I knew I was being wheeled upstairs and that seemed like it took forever but I awoke in what seemed to be what I thought was a very pretty room.  The first thing I saw through my morphine haze was a big screen t.v. mounted on the wall.  I then heard my husband and step-Mom saying hi and giving me a kiss.  They were sitting by a window and I could hear them saying what a magnificant view I had.... hey I want to see!  Throughout the day I was in and out and sleeping a listening to them talk, watch t.v. and then one of our closest friends came in and he gave me a kiss and said hey this is quite a room.  I remember asking him to take a picture of the view with his cell phone which he did.

My nurse Mei Mei was on and she was just great, kind and compassionate.  I could do no drinking the day of surgery but man did I use that lolipop sponge A LOT.  The shift change brought nurse Oliver who I don't remember too much of.  Things went pretty quick Thursday. My husband slept in the room with me that night in a chair that made into a bed. Friday came and Mei Mei came back in and brought a clear beverage tray and I sipped water most of the morning.  She later brought me pills that had been crushed and mixed with apple juice, I was able to get it down but it didn't taste too good.  Later on, she brings back more pills, the crusher and mixes them with orage jello.  Ok, I'll give it a try.... It was so terribly bitter and I tried it and I dumped.  I told her from this point forward, I will refuse that crushed med and insulin was given instead (that worked great).  I sent my hubby home early that day so he could get some sleep so he left at 1:30 p.m. and in came my friend from the day before.  I told him about the dumping and he had good advice, down the road when you want to have something questionable, remember this feeling.

The only part of the stay that frustrated me was at 10:30 p.m. on Friday night, I got up for my 4th walk of the day and I heard this voice say, Ms. Corrick we're going to have to move your room.  I said what, now, why me?  I twice requested that they call my husband to let him know that I moved rooms and they promised me they would.  Well from the penthouse to the outhouse is all I can say.  I was moved into a room that had 4 beds, the man (yes, I said man) across the hall and behind the curtain had ESPN blaring and a machine was going on my left.  I happen to be a light sleeper so my nice nurse Jessica appologized a million times and brought me ear plugs.  I slept very well the rest of the night and woke to find a nice lady who had RNY by Dr. Rogers on the same day.  She said she was not tolerating pain well and she remarked at how well I was walking.  I told her, I am in pain but I am forcing myself to walk more to get rid of the gas.  I remember from having my gallbladder out it made a HUGE difference in my recovery and I did the same thing this time.  If they tell me to walk 3 times during the day, you can be sure I am going to try like hell to do 4 and I did.

My husband came in at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday and of course walked into the old room and found a man and his guest in my old room, apparently they didn't call and needless to say, he wasn't pleased.  The residents came in and he was scolded by one of them for being here so early, don't even go there he said.  All was good and I was going home as soon as they removed my JP drain.  So finally Dr. Rogers came by and said everything looked great and he'd see me in 1 or 2 weeks and that one of the Drs would come to remove the drain and then I would be allowed to go home.

The drain removal time came, and while I was nervous about it, it wasn't really bad.  It literally took 2 seconds and just felt weird but not painful.  The site where it was remains sore but not painful.  On with the clothes and away we went.

I think the challenging part of the 1st day home was a need for more of a schedule so I could make sure I was doing things correctly.  What eventually worked very well for me was on even hours I would "eat" the thicker liquids I was allowed and on the odd hours, I would do clear ones.  This has worked really well.

So now a little wow moment, yesterday Jan. 12th I visited my fantastic personal Dr. and he said my incisions looked great, my blood pressure was perfect so he stopped one of the 2 meds that were so bitter.  The other he wanted me to call him this morning with my blood sugar level which is 171 and he will make a decision on the other one.  Whoo Hoo!

More later....
