Surgeon Testimonial

Cynthia Long M.D.
I love Dr Long! So much so that I followed her to Baltimore and would probably want to continue aftercare with her no matter where she'd work! :)
My first impression was that she's very skilled & detailed. Her plan was easy to follow and she gave all new patients a binder that explained the process step by step She made things clear at surgery & right after, which assuaged some worries I had early on. I had no complications from my surgery. My positive opinion on Dr Long has not changed over time. However, I feel that she could have better staff at Sinai - they did not make for a smooth transition from her private practice to working at Sinai and I have had some problems in them relaying messages & communicating. Future patients should know that Dr Long is an employee of Sinai, which already had an established bariatric program. If a future patient does not feel comfortable with any aspect of Sinai's program, they need to weigh that carefully and discuss their concerns. For example, I decided to return to my original nutritionist instead of continuing aftercare with the nutritionist at Sinai; their plan did not coincide with what worked for my body, but it may work better for other people.
I've heard alot of stories of surgeons either having good competence but bad bedside manner - Dr Long has good skills on both, which is a hard find. One cannot base their success on a program or a surgeon, so it is important for potential patients to know the great majority of the work & success will be the patient's, but it is extremely important to have a supportive & understanding surgeon. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr Long!

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I had been overweight and obese for most of my childhood and all of my adult life. I had begun to consider weight loss surgery in my 20s but had neither the insurance coverage nor emotional resources to pursue the surgery at that time. I had been on diets since age 12, had struggled with binge eating, unhealthy eating concepts, and even a brief brush with bulimia until I failed my last diet (Weight Watchers) at age 30. I got married in a size 22 wedding dress, was profoundly unhappy with my body image, and had been a success in so many other areas of my life - except the one that was most visible and representative to others!

Addicted to nuts
on May 31, 2011 11:29 am
Normally that shouldn't be a bad thing but they are high in calories/fat so I took the container of peanuts and divied it into serving size baggies..... Hopefully that will help me not feed my nut addiction. Pistachios have their shells on so that helps me pace myself a bit more....
Today I go back to the cardiac rehab center this afternoon for the first time in months. I finally felt well enough to work out for real so time to use up those prepaid 6 sessions. I plan on being in there for an hour and a half so should be getting in plenty of cardio in....
Eldest cat had her follow-up appointment with the oncologist and all went well. She's down a couple oz so we're to start her back on wet food so she can gain some extra weight. All other things going well....

Follow up on the exercise at 7p - I got there a little late but made up for it, no doubt! I did 40 min on the treadmill for a total of 2 miles and over 200 cal burned & 15min on the eliptical for 0.60 miles. I was sweating so much I had salt in my hair! But feels good to have gotten in a workout and pushed myself harder than ever! Maybe I'll try to make this a weekly thing at least until my prepaids run out.

So close to onederland
on May 29, 2011 7:28 am
that I can taste it.... Wait, no that's my yucky vitamins. Blech! But weighed myself this morning - even after eating a bit of breakfast - and it was 205.6! I'm so close to being under 200 and only 6 weeks out! Amazing.
Breakfast was a bit odd but yummy - We bought bison meat on Friday as someone said it has alot of protein per serving. About 20g per 5 oz. Doesn't sound particularly high but is pretty low in fat. Made that up with no-sugar spaghetti sauce and lots of fresh herbs from my "garden". Given I live in the metro DC area, that means a few planters on my patio. Hey, if my italian Nana could grow tomatoes in her condo for years, I can grow some herbs! Anyway, cooked that with a bit of parmesean and it was a filling breakfast. Now doing the meds. I'm gonna have to do a greek yogurt chaser to put a better taste in my mouth.
Yesterday I made an angus beef roast and DH was quite pleased with it. It's nice to make food that's not just for me...

The whole numbers
on May 28, 2011 1:38 pm
Today I weigh 207lbs, so that makes 60 total pounds lost and 20lbs since surgery! I went to Goodwill between clients because my size 20W pants were becoming a bit too "low rise". As in the inseam was sagging towards my knees and I could take my pants off without unbuttoning or unzipping. So I went to buy a belt - for the first time in several years - and the closest fit was a size Large belt! Just barely fits my waist but still..... so that inspired me to look at their clothes and I found 2 pairs of pants in size 16W and they were Talbots brand! Also found a pair of Ann Taylor pants in size 12 that look like a biggish cut so they'll go in my "not quite yet" pile. Also found a Old Navy shirt & a Chicos shirt for a couple bucks each. I'm still holding on to a few gift cards to stores which I'll wait to buy more quality clothes when I'm in "normal" sizes. Overall, I'm very glad with my progress and we jogged 6 times when we took our Saturday Walk around the lake.

6 week follow-up
on May 26, 2011 9:47 am
I was at my surgeon's office at 8:30a but didn't get seen until 10a and finally got to be done at 11a. Ugh! What a long morning. The good news is my lab work (after the nurse harrassed LabCorp to get them to send the results from 2 weeks ago!) seems mostly normal. My cholesterol seems to be well controlled finally with the meds and my gallbladder function seems to meet surgeon approval. I see her in August and was able to get appointments for her and for the NUT on the same day. I'll likely have to cancel all my clients that day b/c it takes so long to travel to/fro. Well, here are the labs that weren't normal:
White Blood Cells - high - 10.8
ALT (SGPT) - high - 49
HDL Cholesterol - low - 33
Iron Saturation - low - 11
Vitamin D, 25-hydroxy   - low - 27.3
Copper, serum - high - 225

SO the WBC isn't very high and all others on CBC were normal so surgeon isn't worried. ALT is just barely high, so again she's not worried as long as it doesn't trend higher and higher over time. HDL has always been low for me, hopefully will improve with continued Crestor use and weight loss.  Iron is just a tad low but surgeon doesn't want me upping my iron intake unless it continues to trend low at next labs in 3 months. Vitamin D is no surprise at all; she said I'm not in Ricket's danger but will start taking the dry D3 when it arrives, hopefully soon! THe copper is a puzzeling one - surgeon wasn't entirely sure what that could mean or what it could be attributed to but will talk to the NUT and let me know if it's anything to be concerned about or take action on.

As soon as I got home I started eating solids b/c all I had today was protein shake and it's gonna be a long day for me! Support group's tonight & I still have to get ready for my afternoon clients. I slept really bad last night b/c I was worried about this appointment but as all seems ok, I guess I had nothing to worry about afterall. Bummed a bit that my weight hadn't changed this week. Guess I"m at the 6 week stall. I had lost 1 inch in my waist in the past month and 1/2 inch in my hips. I almost wonder it wasn't more because I was 227 at surgery and now 208 but fitting into a much smaller size in pants.... weird.

Big pouch, small pouch
on May 25, 2011 6:46 am
It may be too early for this but I think yesterday was a big pouch day and now today is a small pouch day. Yesterday, I had no problem geting in all my protein and was actually able to eat veggies and some chicharrones as a snack. Today, I gagged down a protein shake and am looking at this greek yogurt like "how in the world am I going to get this all down??". I haven't weighed myself this week because I have a feeling I may be at a stall but I go to the surgeon tomorrow for my 6 week appointment so I will get weighed then. Hopefully I'm inching closer to Onederland... Tomorrow's gonna be a long day though. Surgeon appointment in Baltimore at 9am, clients in the afternoon, then support group from 7p-8:30p. It'll be a protein shake day for sure. And some cheese sticks. Just gotta make it thru.....
