Surgeon Testimonial

Cynthia Long M.D.
I love Dr Long! So much so that I followed her to Baltimore and would probably want to continue aftercare with her no matter where she'd work! :)
My first impression was that she's very skilled & detailed. Her plan was easy to follow and she gave all new patients a binder that explained the process step by step She made things clear at surgery & right after, which assuaged some worries I had early on. I had no complications from my surgery. My positive opinion on Dr Long has not changed over time. However, I feel that she could have better staff at Sinai - they did not make for a smooth transition from her private practice to working at Sinai and I have had some problems in them relaying messages & communicating. Future patients should know that Dr Long is an employee of Sinai, which already had an established bariatric program. If a future patient does not feel comfortable with any aspect of Sinai's program, they need to weigh that carefully and discuss their concerns. For example, I decided to return to my original nutritionist instead of continuing aftercare with the nutritionist at Sinai; their plan did not coincide with what worked for my body, but it may work better for other people.
I've heard alot of stories of surgeons either having good competence but bad bedside manner - Dr Long has good skills on both, which is a hard find. One cannot base their success on a program or a surgeon, so it is important for potential patients to know the great majority of the work & success will be the patient's, but it is extremely important to have a supportive & understanding surgeon. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr Long!

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I had been overweight and obese for most of my childhood and all of my adult life. I had begun to consider weight loss surgery in my 20s but had neither the insurance coverage nor emotional resources to pursue the surgery at that time. I had been on diets since age 12, had struggled with binge eating, unhealthy eating concepts, and even a brief brush with bulimia until I failed my last diet (Weight Watchers) at age 30. I got married in a size 22 wedding dress, was profoundly unhappy with my body image, and had been a success in so many other areas of my life - except the one that was most visible and representative to others!

Events to walk my butt off
on May 19, 2012 4:41 pm
Ok, my charity events are coming up hot & heavy! I only have two more weeks before Relay for Life on June 9th (http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY12SA?px=27004324&pg=personal&fr_id=41158)  then Take Steps for Crohn's & Colitis on June 16th (page to donate is here: http://online.ccfa.org/site/TR/2012TakeStepsWalk/Chapter-GreaterWashingtonDCVirginia?px=2328986&pg=personal&fr_id=3128   )    then sometime in September we'll be doing the OAC's Walk From Obesity (haven't registered for that yet), and way off in the horizon is the AIDSwalk DC on October 27th (page for donations is here: http://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=1010031&lis=1&kntae1010031=1834E26277AC4D358676E2F72C8A834A&supId=342610060 ).

Whew! I'm tired just thinking about all that walking. A little intimidated thinking about how many hours we'll be walking for Relay and I haven't been able to attend any of the info sessions for team captains. Which, if I'm "captain" of a team of me & my husband, how much of a team is that anyway???

Back to the point of fundraising, I've been really bad at it. Too busy making money for my bank account to spend much time raising money for ACS, CCFA, OAS, Whitman-Walker clinic, etc...... So IF anyone reading this post feels so motivated to donate to ANY of the charities above, please click on those links and pat yourself on the back for a good cause!

NC trip and LOOKY-ME!!!
on May 13, 2012 5:15 pm
We had a great time in the Outer Banks with my in-laws and took some great photos. Exercise was pretty substantial: walking around the Wright Brothers park & up Kill Devil Hill, mini-golf, and climbing the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. Eating was a bit more than expected: doing WELL over 1300 cal per day, even getting up to 1600 one day! Not sure if that's a good thing.... Hopefully will meet with my NUT next month to discuss if I should be going up that high in calories on a regular basis.

OK, so here are the pics of me:

Striking a pose at the Wright Monument

Looking hot but feeling cold on a windy beach!

Shopping with MIL at a Belk and tried on a size 4 pants!!!!

Me in my Victoria Secret tankini!!!

Suck it up time!
on May 6, 2012 3:29 am
So I've been noticing a trend in myself for the past few days. My caseload has picked up like crazy, which is kinda awesome because I'm sick of being broke but kinda sucky because seeing 9 clients in a row leaves no room for eating. At all. Which leads me down a slippery road: with no time for food and just a few protein shakes to tide me over, I'd been spending most of the day famished and started just gorging at night. Not a good trend for someone who's struggled with bulimia. And not even mentioning when the last time I've exercised.... At least I'm doing the stairs at my office instead of the elevator. Right? Weak smile.
I've GOT to start making balance a priority!! I've got to make at least breakfast happen, even when I'm too busy for solid food in the rest of the day. And I've GOT to limit how much I'm eating when I get home. Eating 600 cal in the span of an hour, and of way more carbs then I'd like to admit, is just not a good idea. Having an achy pouch and a carb-hangover the next morning is getting really old. Sigh. Suck it up time.
