Surgeon Testimonial

Thomas H. Magnuson
At our first meeting, I felt relaxed and put at ease. Even though they forgot to put me into the system,he didn't rush me out and took the time to answer all of my questions. I felt comfortable with him. I was a bit disappointed with him after surgery though. He only saw me once post op; the rest of the time, his surgical team visited me. When I went for my 2 week post op, I didn't see him at all, I saw a P.A. She was very nice but it would have been nice to see him. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, I was concerned about having to recieve blood. Even though he reassured me that he has never had to do a transfusion for this surgery and said he would totally respect my wishes, he made a couple of comments that I guess he thought were funny, but not to me. One right before I was wheeled into surgery. I guess all in all, as a surgeon I would rate him a 10+, he is very skilled and takes his time.

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I wasn't overweight as a young child; I started to pick up weight around 11 years old. Most of my family was overweight and we didn't have rules as far as food goes. I lost weight for the first time when I was 16 and lost about 50 lbs. When I met my husband at age 19 I was well over 200 and my weight just went up from there. I would lose weight through various programs over the years but I would always gain it back plus some. When my husband and I got married, we partied most weekends and that included eating all hours of the night. When the kids came along, we ate out a lot and it wasn't until my daughter was cleaning out her room and we came across some old journals that I realized that 90% of the time we spent together as a family...

Hello everyone.  My name is Susan and I live in Middle River, MD.  I had RNY on Feb. 12, 2010.   I have lost 168lbs and I have lost 70.3 inches from my hips, butt, chest, arms, legs and neck!  I am really enjoying having to get new clothes (although it can get expensive) and having more energy to do things including going to the gym with my son and husband and being able to workout. My current weight is 194.

3 Year Surgiversary!!!
on February 20, 2013 7:12 am

Wow!  It has been 3 years since I had the surgery that changed my life :).  It has been quite a journey, filled with ups and downs (physically and otherwise), but it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.  I am so enjoying being able to do things without having to stop to catch my breath and without getting tired.  I love being able to buy clothes off of the racks and not having to go to specialty stores just to buy panty hose!  I love being able to get on the floor to play with the children in my life (or to even just sit on the floor and watch TV, read or whatever!).  There are many other things I could list here, but it would take too much space and time but the main thing I love now is ME and the self confidence that I have gained.

So far, I have been able to maintain my weight loss of 165 lbs (within about 5 lbs), which the doctor tells me is completely normal at this stage.  I do need to get myself back on track with my protein, water intake and exercise but I have the confidence that I will keep this weight off.  To anyone contemplating this surgery (RNY) I would recommend it, hands down. My only caution would be to make sure you do your research on the doctor(s) you are interested in and make sure they and the facility they are associated with are certified.  Read reviews, talk to people, etc.  I had my surgery at Johns Hopkins at Bayview in Baltimore; it was performed by Dr Magnuson and he did an outstanding job.  His whole staff is fantastic (I just had my 3 year checkup) and they are so patient and never rush me through. So I would recommend them wholeheartedly!

2 Year Surgiversary!!!
on February 12, 2012 7:29 am
I cannot believe that it has been two years since I had my life saving gastric bypass.  I would have never dreamed that I would weigh less than I did in high school! I have lost almost 1/2 of my body weight and can participate in things I haven't been able to in years.  Just walking up the stairs with a basket of laundry is no longer a chore for me; I can cross my legs while sitting at a table, workout at the gym and walk without breathing like I had just run a marathon and I am looking forward to visiting Dollywood in the Spring and riding all of those rides that I could never fit on to before!  Hopefully I will be able to maintain. I got my labs back and everything except my iron was in the 'normal' range!  Woo Hoo!!!  171 lbs gone and according to the doctor records, I have lost 22 inches off my waist and 19 inches from my hips.  I haven't checked the other areas yet, I have to contact the records dept at the hospital for the other measurements.

Another WOW Moment!
on August 10, 2011 12:47 pm
I just love WOW moments!   I went to DressBarn to buy a dress for my daughter's wedding (one month from today) and I had a few dresses in 16 - 18 to try on.  Well, I put one on and came out and the woman says "That dress is too big; it must be the 18" Well she checked it and it was the 16!!!  I had to go down to a 14!!!!!  I could not believe it; I almost cried.  So I was able to buy a beautiful dress in a size 14 for my daugher's wedding when I was hoping to be in a 16!

Gym
on July 21, 2011 8:47 am
I can't believe it...I did something I never thought that I would do...I joined a gym! LOL A friend of mine started taking me to her gym as a guest and I really enjoyed the walking on the treadmills and the bikes so my hubby and I joined!  Right now we go 2-3 times a week.  I usually do 1-2 miles on the treadmill and 1-2 on the bikes and then do some exercises with free weights or machines that target the arms and abs.  I never thought I would go to a gym!  Since my kids are older and pretty much on their own, the hubby and I have more time to do things together and what a great way to spend our time :).  So it has multiple benefits
