Surgeon TestimonialWade Barker, M.D.Busy, but friendly. Same impression each time I have seen him, but his office staff seems to really be on the ball when it comes to tracking progress of labs, tests, xrays, etc. Haven't heard much but good stuff about Dr. Barker.....we'll see? My surgery in 3 days on the 16th of July!!!

I am 50 years old........will be 51 on Aug. 17th, a month after my surgery. I am an LVN and work full time on a medical-surgical floor. I am looking forward to the freedom to be active and better matched physically to my mental age! I want to play!! My hubby and I raise horses and I am looking forward to being able to ride again!! Been way toooo long that I have been overweight. I am counting the days down to my surgery!
Just checking in! on November 29, 2007 7:01 am
Been quite a while since I posted here, but wanted to update.......
I went back to work in mid October........still have a lot of soreness in the right shoulder. Can't move it in certain ways, like to reach back or up towards my left shoulder. But, had to get back to work as the money was getting short and my horses have this habit of wanting to eat!!
I am now down to 195#. Bought a pair of size 38 Wrangler's........yeah!! Doesn't sound that great, but when a 44 was fitting snug.....it does!
I uploaded a new pic of me taken yesterday. I can see a lot of difference in my face. My face always gets to looking like I have Aids or some other horrible disease.......But, I feel great! Not tired, weak or anyting bad! I actually haven't felt this good in years!
Anyway, hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and will have a wonderful Christmas and New Years!
Take care and everyone keep up the good work!!

September 18th, 2007 post.... on September 18, 2007 9:40 am
My shoulder is getting some better, but I still have no strength in it to lift anything! I had an MRI on the 13th and it showed a partial tear in the rotator cuff and a possible separation to the AC joint and showed the spur. Don't know what the doc will do about it, if anything. Still going to physical therapy....
As for my weight loss, I've now lost down to 219! That makes 39 pds in 2 months. Total since starting is 53 pds! I am definitely feeling better! Able to move a lot more freely and be less out of breath! Had gotten to the point where even a little activity left me breathing hard. My knee doesn't seem to appreciate the weight loss yet.
I've already had to go thru the closet and get rid of the scrubs and clothes that don't fit any more. Yeah!!
Well, everyone take care and have a great day!

Another year older and less weight to carry! on August 18, 2007 7:13 pm
Yesterday was my B-Day. yeah. Had two little bites of a piece of cake and that was enough. I've lost down to 235 now. YEAH!! That makes 23 pds since surgery. Feels like more sometimes, the way clothes are fitting.
Hurt my shoulder this last Monday at work, so not doing a lot of typing. Hurts like crazy to move it at all. Hurts just like when I hurt my Left shoulder 10 years ago...and, had to have surgery to fix that one. Will start my Occupational Therapy for it on Tues....We'll see what I can tolerate? Not too much movement, that is for sure!!!
Otherwise, things are going well. No issues with the surgery. Tolerating all things pretty well. Doing better on the fluid intake, but still have to remember the supplements and protein!
Still hanging out and reading and posting on the OH Forum, tho. Everyone take care and have a great day!

Weighed this morning...... on August 9, 2007 2:50 pm
I weighed on my digital scales this morning and weighed 240 pounds. Yeah!!! That makes 18 pds lost since surgery.
I returned to work the 6th and even tho my back got tired, I survived it. All 12 long hours of it! I work this weekend; my 3 day weekend. Only complaint I have about working is it is hard to get food and water down. Not a lot of time when you work at a busy hospital like we do! Stay so busy, you can't hardly take a break. I used to feel dehydrated even before I had surgery. Am trying to work out a plan at work to be able to at least get my water in.......
Otherwise, am doing fine. No problems. Into clothes now that I have never been able to wear since my daughter gave them to me a few years ago! They've been in the closet every since. Can't believe how much a difference just losing that few pounds makes!
Gonna go outside and try to mow some in a while.....once it starts to cool off. Gotta get after the grass before it gets so tall again!
Have a good day everyone!

I feel Good!! on August 3, 2007 2:10 pm
Feeling good. Continuing to do well. No problems thus far! So happy!! Have now lost 15 pds. Like I said, slow and steady is fine with me!! I have started to eat some more "solid" type foods. I watch what I eat, but have been able to eat a little BBQ brisket meat that was cooked ever so tender, a bite of potatoe salad and some beans! Yeah! Real food!! Altho, today I still wound up getting mashed potatoes as there wasn't a lot else on the menu to pick from that I thought I could eat! Not having a big issue with head hunger. I do see stuff and think, "that looks good, or I remember how good that was", but, am able to resist and not worry about it. Just glad to be losing.
Just called and my friend Lisa had her surgery this morn. She's back in her room and doing well. Can't wait till we can "talk" and compare notes. She's almost 3 weeks behind me, so maybe we can be each other's support system.
Then, yesterday, I had another lady call me from work, and she works in the HR Dept where they handle insurance......when I got the call I was a bit worried as to what she wanted.......and when I called her, she said did I mind telling her about the gastric bypass, how I was doing, how the surgery was, etc.!!!! Too cool! I guess everyone at work is looking at me to see how things go! Ha..
Tried to make myself a weight loss ticker.........hope it works!!!
Hello and thanks to all!

My Story
Hello everyone~!
Well, in 3 days I will begin my journey to a new me! Hopefully with God's Grace I will do well thru the surgery and not have any issues to deal with!! I'm 5'5" and weighed 258.2 pds yesterday. Hoping to get down to about the 140 to 150 mark after my surgery. My goal is first of all, to get and stay healthy, to be able to live a LONG life.....I happen to LOVE living!, and to be able to ride and work with my beloved horses again! Been a long time since I've been able to ride. Since my old stud died in '00, I haven't been on a horse. I've picked up about 60 pds since then.
I was upset today when Dr. Barker's office called and said that they were not happy with the chest xray that I did on Wed. Said I had some 'prehilar density and vascular congestion".....basically, I had some Congestive Heart Failure that showed on my films. That really isn't any surprise.....I had worked four 12 hr nite shifts in a row and went up to my pre-cert appt w/o any real sleep. I was swelled up like a toad and had 4+ pitting edema to my legs! If you swell in your legs, you usually have swelling everywhere to some degree! I made a deal with them to have another chest xray in the morning after resting tonite and taking some lasix.......Of course, taking lasix in the nite and resting is like an anomoly! The two don't go together! I only had a trace of edema this morn and it has improved. I had to keep my knee on the ice machine most of the day to get the swelling and pain down, but it's better now. They put me on call at work, so am hoping that I get a reprieve and don't get called in! Praying!!
I have been overweight for most of my life. I have had some periods in my life where I was "normal or near normal" weight. None that added up to a majority of my life, that is for sure! In 2000 I had a tibial plateau fracture in my right knee and that makes it difficult to do any long time exercise if it involves my knee......I don't do water so Pool work has not been an option! Maybe when I'm thinner....but, I have never liked water deeper than my shower floor!
I am married for the last 16 years to the most wonderful man that God could have blessed me with. He is a jewel among men. He spoils me rotten.....actually, he's helped to contribute to my weight gain. He never understood that if he brings it home I will eat it! I keep telling him it is like taking a drunk to a bar and not expecting them to go off the wagon!! With the Gastric Bypass, I hope the physical barriers it will create will be the best tool for me! I have 2 beautiful children, (Who swear that my current hubby is their REAL dad!!!)Roxanne who is 32 and the mom to 3 of the most gorgeous grandkids that God ever made!!!! Savannah 11, Jesse 8 and Madison Mackenzie 1 year old! Thomas, my son, is 31 and lives in Nevada and isn't married now. I don't get to see him much and he seldom calls, but he still says he loves me more than his sister! He doesn't have any kids. His first wife didn't want to get "fat" and pregnant. Shame, too, cause Tommy would be a great dad. Maybe someday?
I've done suprisingly well this last week on my liquid diet. I started July 5th with full liquids and then last Monday, I went on clear liquids. Kinda hard to find clear liquids that have NUTRITION in them. Have been drinking something called "ENLIVE!". It is actually pretty good tasting! Especially over ice. It has 10 grams of protein, no sugars and not a lot of carbs, but has quite a bit of vitamins and minerals in it....
I called and asked if I needed any "Bowel Prep" for pre-op and they said, "no, just stay on your liquid diet". Still bugs me, since they will be doing intestinal surgery...but, I guess they know how to deal with it? When we have patients going for other intestinal surgery, we always do the clean out before hand with the preps. Oh, well....it is in my doctor's hands!!!
Of course, I am still way nervous......and today's issue didn't help! But, then that little voice on my shoulder says, "Cheryl, you send people down to surgery all the time that have WAY more issues than you, have much more AGE on them and are SICK to start with.....and they do ok!" But still.........!!!!!!
My doctor is Dr. Wade Barker of Dallas. He's supposed to be good, from what I have researched and read! IF he does me right I will sing his praises to the wind!!! I'm praying God guides him in all the surgeries he does for people like me, that desire a change in their life!!
I have to be at Mesquite Community Hospital at 5am on Monday July 16th, so anyone reading this please say a prayer for me!!!! Even tho I'm a nurse, I'm a chicken when it comes to surgery!!!!! Thanks everyone in advance for sharing all their stories and lives with me thru this forum! It has been instrumental in giving me the courage to go ahead with this!!! Cudo's to you all!
Love,
Cheryl
